Day 2: What makes news?

Review news article --> with a partner, share your news article. Why is your article newsworthy? What did you learn? How many sources were there?

1. What makes news news? A quick video. What elements go into making something news?

2. Short powerpoint.

3. Use news websites to find examples of each news value term. You can work in partners. Share out as class.

4. What would be some ideas for news stories on campus?

Sarah, Henry, Lije --> go through the fall semester and the last two years. What have been the top stories reported? What articles stood out and why? Any graphics that can be used as models of excellence? What topics might we want to look at?

Day 1: We begin. What is news?

1. Name a celebrity.
2. “How do you know about this person?” (What news sources have you used to learn about this person?)
3. “What makes something news?” (What's the news of the day? What's important to you right now? Important on local, state, national, international level?)

For other pieces, please read this news and this opinion piece. Take note of facts and opinion statements in both pieces as supporting evidence. Are there facts and opinions in both? Why or why not?

Day 33: draft due ... check-ins & graphics

1. Draft due. Is it shared w gmail account?
2. Check-ins. Create homework assignment for yourself.
3. Final due on Friday. What is your graphic?

Day 31: draft due and check-ins

1. Draft due ... who's got what? (individual check-ins with Mary)
2. Final brief due on Thursday. Confirm what you're doing and make it great!
3. Interviews needed and voices you're going to get for the final article.

Day 27: Articles due. Final pieces ...

1. Articles due. What's in? What's missing?
2. What's next? --> final article will be due on Friday Dec 11. We will draft as usual (drafts due first meeting of each week, but during the final full week of classes, we will have a draft due on Monday and Friday. Today: write your pitch for your next article. We will review these as a class on Wednesday (and Friday).
3. Briefs due on Wednesday.

Day 23/24: Research for articles

1. Draft 1 due. What do you have? Anything cool to share?
2. Research 5-7 articles that could help your article. Think hyperlinks, experts to support your ideas, insight you'd like to confirm or investigate here on campus.
3. Brief due on Wednesday. 2nd draft of article due on Monday.
4. Schedule an interview for A block on Monday.
