Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.

Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

Article Ideas: Edition 7

Same rules as the last time. Publication date will be early March. Please keep that in mind when coming up with ideas.

Please post 5-7 ideas for the second edition of the year. Be sure to read the other ideas BEFORE you post your own. You can elaborate on another person's post (with a citation, of course). Include an article idea for each section. Be specific and format each idea as such:

Article: Reaction to Snow Day
Peoples reaction to snow day on campus and how it might have disrupted the environment. We could talk to apes teachers about that and maybe Travis about if she thinks that was the best way to spend that money and the spirit captains.

Article: A quarter of the way through the second half of the year
How students are holding up after being in school for so long especially seniors and if they have any regrets or last things they wish to accomplish before the end of the year.

Article: The attack of the "lax bro" culture and how some have come to accept it and some still hate it. Students approach to it as the season begins. People to interview: students on campus and lacrosse players reactions. Possibly a teacher.

Article: Super Bowl
Something about the super bowl could be really fun in the paper either predictions or something else from teachers and students.

Article: NBA favorite teams
Students and teachers favorite NBA teams at the time and why, its fun to see what sports teams teachers like

Article Idea: Spring Fashion Trends 2011
Must interviews: People who are into fashion. Can be both students and teachers, there could be pictures or sketches.
Why will people want to read this: Many MA students are interested on what some predicted trends are for the 2011 year.

Article Idea: Snow Day (Both Sides) Article
Must interviews: One student could take a pro-stance and another could take a negative stance. It would be kind of cool to see the evidence and reasoning behind each view point, since Snow Day did cause a lot of controversy...
Why will people want to read this: Students either seemed to love or hate snow day, so they would love to read what their peers had to say.

Article Idea: Review of The Skin Of Our Teeth
Must interviews: This could be a straight opinion/review piece, so no quotes would be necessary.
Why will people want to read this: Students would be interested to see what a peer has to say about the MA winter show.

Article Idea: Top 10 movies or TV shows of 2011
Must interviews: Students who are into movies/ tv shows
Why will people want to read this: Entertainment Weekly did this and used photos, and we could do the same. We could also take a poll.

Article Idea: Bullseye.
Must interviews: Another idea from Entertainment Weekly. They have a picture of a bullseye, and we could relate it to MA campus. The thing in the middle being the most prominent and other news with pictures surrounding the bullseye.
Why will people want to read this: Re-cap of MA news in a new and informative way, could be funny as well.

1. Article Idea: Spring Sports Kick-Off
I think it'd be fun to introduce the new spring sport seasons. Tryouts start the first week of February, so we could interview some players about what their experience with these tryouts were like, new players to varsity teams, etc. It can just be a fun preview for what's to come and the season as far as it had gone (if the edition comes out in March, there will have already been some games).
Interviews: Players, captains, coaches
Why: We're a competitive school, and we always like doing well in sports. Giving a preview for the spring will rally the masses. I also think talking about tryouts would be interesting for a lot of people, because if some people are thinking of trying out or just want to know what it was like for players they'll definitely want to read the article.

2. Article Idea: Funny Minicourse Quotes
Just one of those half-pages with really hilarious quotes gathered from various Minicourses. A lot like Overheard, because we'll be asking people about funny stuff they heard on their Minicourses.
Interviews: Students, faculty
Why: Minicourse is always so great, and often times it's sad to come back to school because a lot of Minicourse memories are lost. This article would be a nice way for people to relive their memories. It'd just be a fun, easy piece.

3. Article Idea: Blogs
Our world has changed so rapidly with the Internet. Blogging has redefined "journalism," and they are quickly becoming go-to sites for everyone and anyone. If we did an article talking about their development and then going more in-depth with a couple of really great blogs, I think we'd have a very successful article. Blogs like "When Parents Text" and "The Sartorialist" are really popular.
Interviews: Students and teachers who read blogs or have opinions about them
Why: They're a big part of the world wide web scene. If we give some names and descriptions of good blogs, then the community will want to read the article and check them out for themselves.

4. Article Idea: A Food Page
To do something we haven't really done (except for holiday recipes), I think it'd be fun to have a cooking page for students. There could be a theme to the page. I was thinking "snacks" would be a good one to start off with. Basically, we could have a few different make-your-own snack recipes on the page (smoothies, cracker-sandwiches, etc).
Interviews: I think it would work best to get some ideas from students but also we could make our own. We could also make the snacks and then have students write a small one or two sentence review for them.
Why: Just fun. People will get a kick out of it and if we did cool graphics, I think it'd be a really successful piece.

5. Article Idea: Lit Fest Recap
Talk about the favorite speakers, successful workshops, get a lot of quotes about what people liked this year. Also, compare this year's Lit Fest to those of the past and what people want to see next year.
Must interviews: Students, teachers, maybe get some of the speakers to reflect on their experience at MA.
Why: It's important to do recaps of our major events at school. It always works to give the event some finality with a wrap-up piece in the paper.

Article Idea: Minicourse Reactions
Must interviews: The leaders of some of the new minicourses, freshmen first timers, Seniors whom it was their last trip
Why will people want to read this: This could be an assessment of minicourse after all the talk of how it was not going to be as good as the previous years. The article could be a follow up on the new minicourses and if the year was actually so bad.

Article Idea: A Review/Overview of the 3 visual arts at MA
Must interviews: Jenny, Anne, and Katherine
Why will people want to read this: This could be a way of showing more than just the paragraph provided in the course catalog about the 3 visual arts you could choose to take. The article could contain the three teachers from each class recommending what kind of student take their class.

Article Idea: New leaders of clubs next year
Must interviews: The current and future leaders of MA Clubs
Why will people want to read this: To show who will be leading the various MA clubs after the class of 2011 leave. Could include goals for the clubs from the various new leaders.

Article Idea: What will be the new ping-pong?
Must interviews: Leaders of Kick-ball and dodge ball clubs
Why will people want to read this: Because ping-pong is slowly becoming less and less common, we could do an article on what might be the new fad, with dodge ball or kickball potentially taking it's place.

Article Idea: MA and Facebook
Must interviews: Students and teachers who do and dont use facebook
Why will people want to read this: This could be a way to update the article put out a few years ago about facebook. It could talk about how students are using it now as a posed to it years ago. We could talk to people that are still holding out on using it, and we could talk to the teachers that do and do not friend students.

Uncensored Preview
The uncensored assembly/workshops will occur in mid-march, so maybe we could include a preview of what the events will include in order to prepare the MA community.

Facebook at MA: I agree with Kevin in thinking that this issue would be an apt time to talk about Facebook, esp. its role at MA. Facebook is always a relevant topic. To expand on Kevin's idea, I think it would be interesting to focus on facebook's impact on relationships i.e teacher-student, student-student, teacher-teacher, student-parent, etc.

Technology: Local and international. Technology obviously plays a large role at MA whether it be the projector at assembly, computers on campus, studying on ichat, or even now how we're communicating now via a blog. Technology is also relevant on a global scale with how it affects countries in transition, Egypt for example.

By The numbers
I still think we should do some sort of by the numbers piece, and perhaps make it spring themed. I think it's very difficult to execute "miles swimmers swam" or "stairs at MA=how high we climb" but an interesting by the numbers piece might be expenses at MA, other than tuition. The numbers could include cafeteria costs, number of computers/costs on campus, etc. Or maybe just focus on one aspect. Also, we could do a by the numbers having to do with facebook.

Wildcat of the Issue Twist
I really liked the twist on the last wildcat of the issue, and I think it would be cool to include another twist like that. For example, maybe we could feature one of the quizbowl champions, maybe even two quizbowl champions from opposing teams. Changing the usual athlete feature, despite MA’s athletic accomplishments, could be interesting.

I'd like to second the ideas for articles about Minicourse, Snow Day, and the top 10 movies/TV shows.

Article: Thoughts on Oscar nominees
Interview: students/teachers
Why: Would be interesting to hear other peoples thoughts on the Oscar nominations. Are there any movie that people fell shouldn't be there? any that they think will win?

Article: This may or may not be old by then, but an article about MA's feelings about the protests that are going on in Egypt
Interview: students/teachers
Why: In today's society, events such as these have an impact around the world and are therefore important to discuss

Article: Again, by the time this edition comes out it might be too late, but lately Minecraft has gained a large following at MA
Interview: Students who play the game
Why: The game is very popular

Article: Most anticipated movie of 2011
Interview: students/faculty
This is somewhat similar to Charlotte's idea.

-- -The new TV series "Skins"
-- Interview MA students + faculty if they think it's appropriate or not (ask some students who have seen both the British and American version). We can also probably get ahold of a spokesperson for the show. Must get both sides for this article.
-It's a very controversial show, and it could affect the number of people @ MA who would watch it. Also, this could spread awareness about desensitizing kids to TV and movies.

---What it takes to be a youtube star, and why comedy on the web is so popular.
--Shane Dawson, Weezy Waiter, Fred, possibly other youtubers.
-Why most of the densely subscribed-to youtube channels are successful. How they got there, and what in their life really got them there (I understand that most of the successful youtubers never went to college and/or had trouble as an adolescent). Just an interesting piece.

---What really goes into your food?
--Taco Bell employees, fast food reps, MA students and faculty, Eric Schlosser (Lena Redford's uncle, lives in Bay Area)
-I know that Taco Bell is currently having some issues with their food (their beef is apparently only 36% real meat). Also, it would be interesting to figure out what's really in the food at MA and the corner store and popular foods (food dye, chemicals, fat and sugar content, etc.)

---College Statistics over the years, and the difficulty of getting into one.
--College counselor, MA seniors, college admission administrations.
- Apparently about 30 years ago, college was far cheaper and easier to get into. There were less people applying, way less kids getting 4.0s, and less people willing to pay a large sum of money for four years of education. How college has changed with money, the applicants, scholarships, sports, and extra curricular activities. Do they prefer a well rounded kid or someone who extremely good in one area? I thought that this would be interesting to MA students who can use their skills to their advantage when getting into college.

---Injured MA athletes and how they recovered, or how they didn't
--previously injured athletes who have recovered, CAL athletes who've again, hurt themselves, motivational speakers (i have several very good sources for this)
-I once heard a story about how a nationally-ranked swimmer broke her back in a car crash, and couldn't swim. She was fine and could walk but had to go to intensive physical therapy for a year. She had been aiming to go to the world championships. Every day, she visualized her races. A few weeks before the US team picked their swimmers, she got back in the pool and made the team. Interesting about mind over body and things like that. Motivation is always a good topic.

---How to take advantage of Marin's local resources (pretty bike trails, hiking, swimming, etc. It's spring for our next edition, so might as well take advantage of it)
--The MA mountain biking club, Outings director, MA faculty
-The next edition of the voice is going to come out in the spring, so we might as well give suggestions for what to do on the weekends if one would like to get some physical exercise. The natural locations are also good for some artistic inspiration.

1.) Article: Taboos (Op/Ed)
Although this article might have fashion undertones, the focus is more on some unacknowledged “rules” of at MA. EX: Have a non-descript black backpack. Never wear real fur. You can have a nice car, but not too flashy. Have you own opinion, as long as it is liberal. Look good, but not like you tried too hard. This could go in a few different directions. (P.S. Not saying that these need these rules need to be followed, this is to acknowledge their existence.)
Interviews: Students primarily, but maybe teachers as well to see if they notice anything about the student body as a whole.
Why: MA is great at encouraging individuality, but the conformity is sometimes overlooked, might be nice to expose these aspects.

2.) Article: Guess that Artist (A&E)
There is a lot of permanent art all over campus, but most students don’t know the artists because they graduated or might not have even gone to the school. It would be interesting to give blurbs about these people and their connection to MA or the back-story of the piece we have walked by for the past 4 years.
Interview: With the artists themselves if they can be contacted and maybe some teachers who knew them (art teachers?)
Why: A lot of these pieces are admired and students might be inspired and interested to learn more about the people who created them.

3.) Article: Reflecting on Parenting styles (News or different category)
Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother is a book that has been getting a lot of press recently. It might be interesting to look at parenting here at MA, and what form it usually takes. Incentives/rewards, discipline or something else entirely? This could also be a place for some antidotes if we wanted to go in the humorous direction.
Interview: Students
Why: Students’ relationships with their parents or guardians have a big impact on their high school life because as minors, adults have most of the power.

4.) Article: The world of sports (Sports)
Different sports are popular in different parts of the world. We could pick 5-6 countries (not obvious ones) and write a short blurb about the most popular sport there.
Interview: If any students play the sport or visited the country they could be interviewed, otherwise this will be mostly based on research.
Why: It is always interesting to learn about different cultures. Sports like soccer, basketball and lacrosse have a very popular following here, but that is not the same across the globe.

5.) Article: Watch out for Wisdom Teeth
An article about what these teeth are and what they look like. Also why they need to be taken out, and some advise from people who have already had theirs taken out.
Interview: A local Dentist, students who have or will have their wisdom teeth taken out soon.
Why: Most teenagers have their wisdom teeth removed at some point. It can be scary when you don’t know what to expect, and it would be helpful to know what icepacks to opt for and what pudding is best before having the surgery yourself.

Article: Senior bucket list: 10 things to do before going off to college. What do seniors wish they could have done, and want to do before going to college? Are there trips they wish they could have taken, clubs they wanted to join, ect.
Interviews: seniors

Article: social networking vs. social skills. A pretty common topic, but it’s a good one. Its so easy-too easy- to connect with other people by just sitting at home, and has this negatively affected our generation?
Interviews: Sanjai/Joani, students
Why: Almost every kid has a Facebook, so it would appeal to all.

Article: By the numbers: Clubs, or sports teams. Like Ilana’s by the numbers, but focusing on a specific area, such as clubs or sports teams. There are tons of clubs and it would be interesting to know the stats, and sports is always a good area for this type of thing.
Interviews: Either sanjai if clubs, or Josh if sports
Why: numbers are easy to read. People like to have quick and easy to digest facts like this, and its always fun

Article: How green are we really? An article exploring how environmentally friendly the student body and faculty really is. We claim to be a very green school, but looking down a row of parked student cars by the art room I saw that 9 out of 10 were S.U.V.’s. Things like this could be explored
Interviews: Eco council, apes classes maybe?
Why: environmental consciousness is a big deal at MA

Article: Minicourse stories. A compilation of the best minicourse stories. We won’t have time to get stories from 2011 minicourse, but we could find stories from the past (like ones from the outings assembly last week). It would be a great funny article.
Interviews: Minicourse leaders, students
Why: The article would come out right after minicourse week, so the topic would be fresh on everyones minds, and reading it would spark conversations and memories from this years trips.

1) Exposé on the Photones
-The photones and jenny r.
-Have you recently been hearing the occasional shout out to the "photones" at the thank yous of Senior Speeches? Well the photo class is a very exclusive group of seniors who are pretty interesting and funny! I think out of all the classes at MA, these students have a bond that is pretty strong and worth reading about.

2) Rate Your Teacher.com
-Faculty/Staff/Students
-A piece on the infamous ratemyteacher.com and how it affects the academics at MA. Some teachers have great scores, and others are relatively low. This could be a piece on some reactions from teachers and students. This also relates to an article posted to the blog two weeks ago (i think)

5) Senior Projects
- Joe Harvey, Lynn Hansen, and Seniors doing senior projects
- This article can be a great piece on upcoming approved Senior Projects and students' plans for the 3-week projects. Also, it could be a nice overview on how to have a SP passed and what needs to be covered in a project proposal, since many were turned away at this point.

4) Juniors starting the college process while Seniors finish it
-Seniors, Juniors, and the two Jennifers
-Around early March is when Juniors are starting to take the SAT and visit colleges over spring break. I think this could be a good piece on how juniors are preparing for the process and how they're dealing with stress. It could also be fun to hear from some relaxed Second Semester Seniors

4) Spring Sports Injuries
-Spring sports athletes, josh Fr., and Aaron
-There have been a pretty high rate of injuries lately, especially concussions even though we already reported on that, and the newspaper will come out right in the middle of spring sports. I think it could be a good article for lots of interviews and discussions about coaching methods.

1. Senior Projects
Must Interviews: Seniors (both ones doing senior projects and ones who decided not to/got their proposal rejected)
Why: give underclassmen/juniors an idea of what senior projects are about and the types of things people are doing. Also gives a preview of what a number of seniors will be doing in the closing weeks of school.

2. Response to Minicourse article in an earlier issue. In an issue in the first semester, there was an article discussing the minicourses that were no longer on the ballot.
Must interviews: A variety of students
Why: Hear thoughts about people's minicourses and their experiences. A great way to incorporate graphics and see if the old minicourses were missed or if most people had positive experiences.

3. The Post-It Project
Must Interviews: Leigh Kinney, MA students
Why: Hear people's reactions to new project, see best post-it, funniest post-it, most surprising post-it, etc. Great graphics and fun article about this new phenomenon.

4. Math Night
Must Interviews: Math teachers, students who preformed at math night
Why: I have never been to math night and I think it would be interesting and useful to find out more about it. It would also be a good way for people who did not go this year to find out the types of things people talked about.

5. Interviews of the people that came back from their semester abroad programs, what it's like to be back at MA, what their experience was like, etc.
Must Interviews: people that went to mountain school/City term/ other semester abroad program
Why: Check-in with the people that left to see how their adjusting back. Also, I know that other sophomores and myself are thinking about semester abroad programs. It would be great to get more detail from a students perspective about their experiences and what it was like leaving MA for a semester and how it was returning.

Article: Best beaches in the Bay Area
Must Interviews: Variety of students/faculty so we get a full representation of Bay Area beaches
Why: Summer is coming up and people are going to want to head to beaches that aren't as well known or crowded as Stinson (we could save this for a later edition)

Article: 2011 MLB Preview
Must Interviews: Anyone who follows baseball closely (we could also create a poll about who MA thinks will win the World Series)
Why: Baseball season starts April 1 and it would be an interesting read to see if MA picks SF to win the WS again after all of the Giants fever.

Article: Reaction to senior speeches
Must Interviews: Teachers/students/students who have given senior speeches
Why: What does the MA community think about this years senior speeches vs. other years? Which have resonated with people the most?

Article: Top MA sports moments of this year (kind of like SportsCenter's Top 10)
Must Interviews: People involved in MA Athletics
Why: I think it would be interesting to sum up everything that has happened in MA sports this year.

Article: Upcoming concerts/music festivals people are excited about
Must Interviews: Anyone who is excited about an upcoming concert
Why: We could review some of the upcoming concerts MA kids are going to and also some of the big festivals like Coachella.

Article Idea: Inside the Photones: Exploring the photography cult
Must interviews: Jenny, Anne (as department head), students in photo, other students' reactions to photo students
Why will people want to read this: Nobody really understand what goes on in the darkroom, what the difference between artsy and good photography is, or why people are so into it.

Article Idea: College process starting
Must interviews: Juniors, seniors, college counselors, bill
Why will people want to read this: Juniors will just be starting the college process, and looking towards college visits over spring break. Maybe an article about where people are going, or advice from seniors who are done.

Article Idea: Non-MA sports
Must interviews: Lynne, talking about athletic requirements; anyone participating in a sport outside of MA
Why will people want to read this: The spring sports get a lot of focus during this time, as do all MA sports, but maybe people would want to read about fulfilling PE credits another way.

Article Idea: Outdoors Emphasis (or whatever Peter's doing)
Must interviews: Peter, anyone in it, the community (for reactions to it)
Why will people want to read this: I think that this whole new "emphasis" was kind of quitely announced and now is something that's been accepted without any fanfare or discussion. Let's talk about what it means, who does it, and how it affects people's lives.

Article Idea: The Garden, Then and Now
Must interviews: That guy who works there (I don't remember his name... Arthur?), student leaders of gardening club, students who go, bio classes that go.
Why will people want to read this: This could be interesting because when the seniors got to MA, the garden had only recently become truly legitimate. Now it is a learning space, a space to relax. We could talk about how it started and who uses it now. Maybe also the plants that are there now, what the bio classes are doing, etc.

Article Idea: Thievery
Must interviews: Lynne, Joe, Mickey (?), people who have had their stuff stolen.
Why will people want to read this: Most people leave their stuff around thinking that MA is the safest place in the world. However, it is an open campus and people do have their stuff stolen. We could talk about what has happened, what to do to be more secure, maybe talk about the debate about using lockers, bringing computers to school.

1) Best of Minicourse

A heartwarming page/half page of photos and quotes about peoples' funniest, most challenging, most inspiring, most profound moments from this year's minicourse. This piece would allow the community to reflect on the value of experiences like these.

2) Garden

I've heard rumors about the garden being moved to make room for a swimming pool, and I remember a question about this going unanswered at open forum. If it turns out that the rumor is true, it would make for an interesting piece with feedback from everyone who would be affected, for better or for worse, by the project.

3) Rainy Days

A fun, graphic-heavy piece on fun, indoor, rainy day activities, because the spring months are usually wet.

4) Bay Area's Best Kept Secrets

Interview students about their favorite, "secret" places in the Bay Area: tucked-away beaches, hole-in-the-wall restaurants, vintage stores, etc.

5) Clubs at MA

A page listing the clubs at MA and their aims, with quotes from leaders and members. I think there are a lot of great clubs for students to discuss issues important to them, but a lot of us don't know they exist.

Avery Hale said...

1. Global Role of Men
- A piece on why there ore no men’s leadership clubs/groups at MA, when girls seem to have plenty... W.I.S.E., G.R.O.W etc.
Must interviews: Lynne, Sanjai, Travis, Guys around school/guys who tried to get a group going last year.
Why people will want to read this: Guys don’t seem to be getting equal representation on campus! I know last year a group of junior guys (now seniors) tried to get a group going but it seemed to be frowned upon by many students as well as faculty members and it never ended up happening…. Why?!

2. Jennifer vs. Jennifer
- A compare and contrast piece on Jennifer Blake and Jennifer Christenson.
Must interviews: The two Jennifers, any student who has had either of them as a college counselor.
Why people will want to read this: It will make each of them look good and make students feel more secure about the whole college process! We can do a Q&A with both of them or we could just interview various students on what they liked about their respective Jennifer as a college counselor and specific/unique ways they were able to help them throughout the process.

3. Fruit Bins
Must interviews: Travis, students who want free fruit.
Why people will want to read this: It’s no secret that food at MA is EXPENSIVE. At my middle school, parents had to pay for their kids to eat lunch in the cafeteria, but as a bonus the school provided free fruit in bins stocked with organic apples, oranges, and bananas for students to snack on throughout the day. I don’t even know if this would even be a possibility at MA, but maybe it could influence the administration to get us some free snacks!

4. Winter Sicknesses
-A “how to” piece on staying healthy throughout these cold months.
Must interviews: Any student/teacher with knowledge on the topic!
Why people would want to read this: Even though teachers tell students that it’s better to stay home and get healthy than try coming to class with a 102° fever, it doesn’t make it any easier… This article could be all about tips on how to stay healthy, and since this edition comes out at the very end of winter, it could even be more general and include tips for staying healthy all throughout the year.

5. Student Body: Then vs. Now (from the teachers’ perspective)
Must Interviews: John Hicks, James Shipman, Jim Baldwin, any other teacher who has been at the school long enough to see a noticeable change in the student body…
Why people want to read this: People always talk about the changes that have occurred at MA in recent years, but it might be interesting to get various teachers’ perspectives on the different types of students that now attend MA/ the overall attitude/appearance of students today etc.

Article: Winter Formal

I have heard a lot of talk lately about winter formal. I think it would be fun to do a piece on the culture of winter formal at MA. Unlike other schools where winter formal is more of a date function, winter formal at MA seems to be quite different. I think it would be a fun piece to include a piece including people's quotes about their winter formal/preparation experience and either photos from this winter formal or a selection of winter formals in the past showing the themes.
Why people will want to read this? Its an event that the majority of the students attend and it would be amusing to hear people's quirky stories about their winter formals.
Must Interviews:Mostly seniors who have been to the most.

Article: Early Recruits

I know we have a lot of really good athletes at MA who are yet to be approaching senior year and have already had college offers/express their interest. I think it would be interesting to hear about the pressure of being a star athlete and having to consider colleges at such an early point.
Why people would read this article? With all the talk about where seniors have been accepted to colleges a lot of talk about younger athletes has been spurred and I think it would be interesting to read about those considering this at an earlier age.
Must interviews: Seniors who have gone through this process, younger athletes

Outings:

After the Outings assembly last week I think it would be a fun article to show photos and quotes from various students from their outings. There are obviously really passionate people about outings at MA and I think we should explore what they have to say.
Why people will read this article: Everyone loves seeing images during the outings assembly and hearing the stories.
Must Interviews: outing lovers/anti outings

Article: 2011 Fashion

I like Charlotte's idea of a fashion article to start off spring with. I think that instead of just taking photos of people around MA we should spice up the typical fashion article by comparing people's looks to those in the fashion industry/fashion shows. I think it is fun to see the trends that students are wearing around campus but I just think it needs to be spiced up a little bit.
Why People WIll Want to read this? Everyone always likes to see who and what trends are featured in the fashion articles.

Article:MA titles

I think it would be a really fun article to take typical reputations like class clown and take a poll on either who each class votes for or who the ultimate MA one is. I think with quotes and pictures of MA students who have really made their mark on the community people would really enjoy this article.
Why would People want to read this? Its funny and everyone will want to see who were the winning votes and what the winner had to say about their reputation.

Article: Sports Traditions
This might have been done a few years ago, but it would be interesting to compare how they have changed over the years. Interview: sports captains

Article: Heard around campus quotes
They are really funny and a quick and easy read, it lightens the mood of the paper and makes people smile. Interview: not really any... what people have heard

Article: Spirit Day Ideas
Ask students what they would want to see for a spirit day, help Senate out a bit... Interview: students from each grade, Carson and Hunter, Lynne

Article: Jenelle's Idea of Taboos...

Article: Lots of people have said college stuff
Would be nice to get good points of advice out so that everyone knows! Interview: Jennifer, Jennifer, Seniors, Juniors, Teachers...

Article: Skin of Our Teeth Review (Charlotte's idea)
I think this is a great idea! We did a preview article, so why not do a review? It could be just like a critic's review...bad / good, star rating etc.

Article: The Best Movies
A list of the best movies for every taste, just a fun article. We could interview random people, and conduct a poll on people's favorite movies.

Article: Outings
Now that the outings assembly has passed, we could do an outings article. Maybe investigate why it's a lottery this semester...

Article: Oscars
The Oscars. Not much more I can say. Nominations, predictions, maybe winners. etc. Some students might have nominated family, I don't know.

Article: MA Artists
We just had the art show, so we could do something about art at MA. We seem to do music / theatre a lot because they have preformances...but visual arts are not as well represented by the Voice.

Article: reaction to snow day and other sprit day ideas.
i feel like we rarely have random spirit days like snow days, and we should definitely have more! this article would be students/teachers reactions to snow day and their ideas for more spirit days like that in the future. we should interview hunter and carson too.

Article: plans for spring break.
like we do the summer articles, we could ask what everyones plans are for spring break and feature the various trips students will be taking.

Article: spring sports
interview josh and coaches and captains of spring teams. this would get everyone excited for the spring sport season and maybe get people to get to more games!

Article: the play
we should write an article on what people thought of the play. what was different then past plays and what was the same? was it a favorite for the MA community? and to talk about all the work that goes into producing plays for students and teachers.

Article: odyssey vs. frankenstein.
as many people know the freshman english course has been changed from the odyssey to frankenstein. it would be interesting to talk to the english teachers and see how the change has been. whats better and whats worse?

Interviews: Lynne, Zia, Christie, Hunter/Carson, faculty opinion, student opinion

Article: Drinks at the caf...What your drink says about you...
Why: fads around different drinks at the caf; changing fads; do people actually like the drink or do they drink it to fit into the latest drink culture
Interviews: Caf staff (what fads, changes they see), students

Article: Hikes in Marin
Why: As Spring approaches, where is a good place to hike, get outside, and enjoy the wonders of Marin?

Article: Lost and Found has been moved to email.
This has been an amusing change, and also one that takes up massive amounts of space in the inbox
Interview: students

Article: The benefits of a blog
Most teachers have blogs, but at the same time some teachers do not. The blog is a very useful resource and Most all students use it,
Interview: Students

Which sports teams will prove to be the best this year? All sports teams at MA are great, but we can try to predict which one will go the farthest and win the championships.
Interview: Athletes, and students

Articles:What to do when bored in the spring?
We can give a list of suggestions of what one can do when bored on spring break. This is not ideally the best idea, but can be very useful when one is bored.

Article: Examining the history/origins of the flowers/ stone plaque in front of the tree in the circle.
A fun piece on what types of flowers are used most/why, when they are changed, who chooses them, etc.--it would be a relatively light-hearted piece that covers an aspec of the MA campus not normally talked about.
Interviews: Travis, Maintenance staff, Lynne?

Article: The plaza by the weight room
On the note of unexplored parts of the MA campus, I was told my freshmen year that the plaza by the art room used to be a prime hangout spot for the MA community. This article would explore that space's history at MA and reflect how MA architectural changes from both the past and possibly the future will affect this space.
Interviews: Lynne, teachers who have been around a while (Glenn, Tom, both Johns, Anne Maurice, etc.), Travis for strategic planning's effects on the space

Article: Examining Jersey Shore, and possibly its impact on the MA community.
Everyone, whether they admit it or not, loves the MTV show Jersey Shore, which features 20-year-olds making fools out of themselves on national TV. The impact it has made is undeniable. This article could review Jersey Shore as a television show or discuss the messages that the show sends about gender or sexuality. Or how the Italian stars are traveling to Italy for a fourth season... there are lots of possible angles.
Interviews: students from all grade levels, teachers who watch the show or would be willing to talk about it, (I don't know of any off of the top of my head), Sanjai and Joani.

Article: Scheduling Nightmares! Interview with Karen Jacobsen about the process of organizing the entire community's schedules.
Why: Everybody is incredibly affected by the schedules given to us, students and faculty included. A conversation about the difficulties of the process would be both fun and relevant to the MA community.

Article: Relevance of Outings Assemblies
My friends and I were talking about the Outings Assemblies recently, and one of the themes that came up was whether the Outings Department should use a Special Assembly to sell the community outdoor experiences. It might be interesting to explore the community's response to recent outings assemblies, most notably the 45ish minutes spent on talking about Outings experiences (which most of us are already aware of).
Interviews: students around school, teachers, possibly Peter?, students on the OLE, teachers who lead outings (John Hicks, Jen Cote, Glenn, Randi and Betsy, Evelyn Tseng?)

Article: (probably better for future editions, but) The new rules for getting your license and how the MA community may be affected.
Members of the incoming freshmen class (or anyone who was born in 1996 or later) won't be able to obtain their license until 18. This may have an impact on the geographic diversity at MA.
Interviews: Dan/admissions people, students who commute to MA, teachers who commute to MA

Article: the dispute over the garden and the future construction plans for MA
People to interview: Travis, students who have worked in the garden for senior project/gardening class/garden club. Also anyone who is involved in making decisions about MA construction plans.
Why: a lot of people participated in last year's discussions with Travis and the architects about how to improve MA's campus, but many don't realize that this could mean destroying the existing garden - it would be interesting to get opinions/thoughts/reactions from student, teachers, and alum.

Article: Junior/Senior Electives
Interviews: current junior/seniors, joe harvey, department chairs?
Why: MA offers so many different elective classes in almost every subject. A lot of MA students, myself included, have a hard time choosing between all the amazing english, history, and science classes offered. I think it would be interesting to

Article: MAPA or MAMA (Marin Academy Mothers Association)?
Interview: Members of MAPA
Why: It's hard not to notice that the vast majority of MAPA volunteers are mothers. At the most recent senior lunch provided by MAPA, there was only one male parent. it would be interesting to talk to faculty/parents who have been involved with MAPA for a while, and ask if it has always been this way.

Article: Toaster/Microwave Controversy
Interview: cafeteria staff, Lynne Hansen, students/teachers who bring their own lunch
Why: There's two aspects of this issue:
1. the microwave and toaster are located in a place that creates a giant traffic jam when combined with the flow of students exiting the the lunch line. If the microwave and toaster were relocated, or if there was an additional microwave/toaster, this could help
2. Many students bring their own lunches to school instead of buying food from the cafeteria. Unfortunately, with only one microwave, some students have to wait up to 15 minutes just to warm up their food. Also, 4 or 5 students often try to cram each of their lunches into the microwave at once, which in turn causes people to warm their food for longer than they normally wood. It's possible that buying another microwave might actually save MA some money on the monthly electric bill.

Article: How has the UC system's budget cuts affected students' college plans?
Interview: Current junior and seniors, the Jennifers, MA alumn who attend a UC
Why: The University of California system is in worse shape that it has been in years, and as a result many students are more reluctant to go to UC's, despite the significant financial advantage of attending a public state school.

Article: Junior/Senior Electives
Interviews: current junior/seniors, joe harvey, department chairs?
Why: MA offers so many different elective classes in almost every subject. A lot of MA students, myself included, have a hard time choosing between all the amazing english, history, and science classes offered. I think it would be interesting to ask current juniors/seniors how they went about choosing their classes, and what classes they regret not being able to take

Article: The path seniors took in their art class (music, theater, visual art, or dance) that got them to where they are right now.
Interviews: Seniors involved in the arts, their teachers, younger students who plan to stay in their art program through their senior year.
Why:MA holds a lot of opportunity for kids to explore the arts, and showing where they end up at the end of their experience would be very interesting.

Article: The uses people have for social networking in everyday life- in egypt, they shut down the internet to stop protests because people were using it to organize meetings. at ma, how do people use social networking to plan events? What would they do without it?
Interviews:students and teachers on their thoughts
Why:its a relevant topic. even though things like it have been done before, it would be interesting to try it from a new angle.

Article: students after school- what are they doing? why are they there? what are they waiting for?
Interviews:students in library, courtyard, cafe, after school. teachers who are usually there after school
Why:in our everyday routine, we don't often see why people are staying after school.

Article: Snow Day reaction (everett's idea) i think this would be great because there really does seem to be a lot of controversy on this concerning the environment and the permission they did or didn't recieve to go ahead with it.
Interviews:travis, spirit captains, student senate, students who were there.
Why:one of the more interesting things that has happened lately at MA. many different opinions on it from what i have heard.

Article: senioritis kicking in. has it started yet?
Interviews: seniors, teachers of seniors
Why: with seniors well into their second semester, it would be a very interesting thing to see whether the infamous senioritis has started yet.

**clarification to my 2nd article idea--I was referring to the plaza area by the weight room, not the art room (the area you walk through on your way to the garden)
