Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.

Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

Article Ideas

Same rules as the last time. Publication date will be late-April. Please keep that in mind when coming up with ideas.

Please post 5-7 ideas for the second edition of the year. You must have at least one article idea for each section (News, Sports, A&E, Features, Op/Ed, Center Spread). Be sure to read the other ideas BEFORE you post your own. You can elaborate on another person's post (with a citation, of course). Include an article idea for each section. Be specific and format each idea as such:

Article Idea:
Must interviews (be specific ... "students" is fairly obvious and somewhat lame):
Why will people want to read this:

News: important deaths in bay area--
this article would be about deaths around the bay area that affect MA or are important and that we should honor. although it's a morbid topic, i believe it would be a really interesting piece. interviews would be determined once we chose the people we were writing about.

Sports: goals for next year--
this article would be about all of the sport teams at MA, and what their goals were for next year, along with what they want to improve and look forward to. we would interview someone from each team.

A&E: reflection/opinion on concerts--
this article would be the students reflecting on concerts and sharing their opinions. for example, students could state what/why the love concerts, and also what they think needs to be improved. we would interview any students

Features: stereotypical views of colleges--
this article would be about the stereotypical views of colleges that students tend to have because of the media and rumors. it would be interesting to compare what students may think to the truth. we would interview any students and college councilors.

Op/Ed: charity/organization
this article would be the one charity or organization that you would give money to or support and why. it would be nice to have a piece like this so that students can learn about another charity/organization and get interested in their work.

Center Spread: cyber bullying--
this center spread would be about bullying, and how it reaches the next level online. it is a really serious and interesting topic that i believe people at MA would be interested in. For interviews we would interview students with a perspective, sanjai, charis, joani, and i have an Aunt whose work pertains to bullying who i'm sure would love to be interviewed.

1. Article Idea: We could do something on teachers who still compete and do athletic endeavors. It would be interesting to see how many teachers still compete and what they do. I remember when Liz told us about the marathon that she ran, my whole class got really excited. People to Interview: Liz Gottlieb, Jamie Collie, other teachers/administrators.

2. Article Idea: Recap of Minicourse. Since there was so much fuss over the lack of outdoors minicourses it would be interesting to see people’s reactions to how minicourse turned out. We could mostly focus on the new ones, maybe Ken’s and Peter’s and other ones (but I am not sure what these are...), both who had led really popular backpacking ones. People to Interview: the leaders of the courses... (ken and peter...) students who went on the newer courses and their perspectives on them.

3. Article Idea: Something on Spring Break. Depending on exactly when this article comes out it could either be on what students did, if there were any really extravagant trips people went on. Or we could focus on things to do at home, especially since we are one of the only schools that has the break when we do. There could also be an aspect on why MA chooses to do a 2 week Spring Break vs. Ski Week... (I think some of it probably has to do with minicourse). People to Interview: students who went exciting places, teachers who went exciting places. we would need to ask around who is/went exciting

4. Article Idea: College Tripping. Again depending on when this came out we could either do something on tips for college tripping from seniors and the college counselors, or on where people went. What school’s seemed to be the most popular this year etc. People to Interview: Jennifer, Jennifer, Seniors... Juniors... again we would have to ask around who did what

5. Article Idea: New Classes Next Year. I’m not sure when these get published or thought of but we could do something on new classes that are being offered in the 11-12 school year. On the other side of this, we could do something about the new classes this semester, or classes that won’t be offered again... People to Interview: teacher teaching these classes (I am not sure who is...) I know James taught a new history course, and Mary taught Baseball Lit... also students in these classes, Joe Harvey (does he help pass the ideas)

Article Idea (Features): Senior speech introductions- A piece about what students want to hear when they are introduced, and who they want to be saying it, and whether or not they're happy with the current system/people who introduce speakers.
Must interviews: Zia and Christie
Why: It would uncover the truth about what people actually think of the introductions.

Idea (Center Spread): Violence in high schools- an article about bullying and fights in high schools, like fights at parties, between schools, or in sports.
Interviews: Joe and Lynne (whether they've had cases of fights before), kids who know other nearby high schools well.
Why: This topic would be really interesting if enough info could be uncovered. There has also been a lot of hype recently of fights between high schools in the city and Redwood.

Idea (Op/Ed): What it takes to be a spirit captain- and article on the personalities of our current captains, and what kind of person you need to be to 'run the schools spirit.'
Interviews: Hunter and Carson, teachers who have been here a while and can talk about all the captains they've seen
Why: It would be a funny piece, and could have a lot of humor if it was an editorial. It would be good advice to those who wish to be spirit captains in the future.

Idea (Sports): Unappreciated sports- an article on sports which don't get a lot of spectators, like golf and baseball. How does not having fans affect the players, and why aren't there any fans?
Interviews: Players on the golf/baseball (and other sports) teams
Why: Some teams don't get much recognition, so it would be good to cover them and release info that people wouldn't otherwise know because they don't go to the games.

Idea (News): What happened to Amo- the freshman was supposedly expelled, but nobody really knows. The piece could explore why he was supposedly expelled, even though it was a first offense, and what students can learn from it.
Interviews: Joe, Lynne
Why: There is a lot of talk about Amo and a lot of kids don't know what happened to him, so the article could divulge information.

1. Top 10 coffee and lunch shops in central San Rafael:
As spring will be upon us by the time this edition comes out, more and more people will be going off of campus to find some quick and yummy food in walking distance of MA. The categories can be ethnic food, takeout, sit-down places, and pizza.
Interview students who have gone there and maybe the managers of the stores.

2. The percentage of the student body who owns electronics such as iPhones, iPads, computers, how this affects their school work either positively or negatively. Interview students and teachers.

3. Small businesses that students at MA have started. Their success and failures in starting something from the ground up. How this has helped them get a more worldly perspective on business, what worked and what didn't. Interview students and faculty.

4. Bloggers: how they have changed other people's lives and their own an of their own. Use examples such as Julie Powell, who started a blog (called the Julie/Julia project), where she would make one recipe from Julia's Child's cookbook every day. She then wrote a book about her experience and her blog, and then that was made into a movie (Julie & Julia).

5. Food and how to stay healthy for spring sports. What's good to eat for (ex) endurance, how to get rid of exercise-induced cramps, improve your aerobic fitness. Interview students who have advise, the medical director at MA, and sports coaches. Good for people who are cross training as well and are staying in shape between seasons.

6. Wasting food at home, MA and developing country's lack of food. I've noticed that over the past few months I've been at MA that I throw out a few pounds of food a week in the cafe, due to the fact that the portions that I'd been given would've fed about 2-3 people. Every year in the US we throw away 96 billion pounds of food. We could interview students, faculty, and the cooks in the kitchen and why they serve particular portions.

A/E
-Seniors Anticipating their Final Arts Performances at MA. This article would talk about the many senior musicians, actors, and dancers who are preparing for their final performances at MA—what are they thinking about?
Interviews: Seniors performing their final shows! Also the music, theater, and dance teachers.

CENTER SPREAD
-Prom! The center spread can tackle various components that make up MA’s prom. Such components include: the traditional “Prama,” or Prom Drama, and the stresses of determining who to ask to prom; the pre-prom organizational stress (for those who have hosted large groups of students and their parents for the traditional pre-prom festivities; and the actual event of Prom itself, meaning the dinner, the entertainment, the venue, the dancing, etc.
Interviews: Juniors and Seniors (and sophomores) who have attended Prom and their favorite parts; teachers who are willing to comment on the effects of “Prama” at school; Lynne Hansen; Joe Harvey.

SPORTS
-MA’s Lost Sports: this article would talk about the sports teams that MA used to have, such as boys volleyball and wrestling (based on some of the older banners in the New Gym). This article would also cover maybe varsity football as well (playing off of one of the MA T-Shirts). Why do they no longer exist at MA?
Interviews: Josh Frechette/Josh Kalkstein; teachers who may have been around during while these teams were in existence.

FEATURES
-In conjunction with the Center Spread, the Voice could publish a humorous article with tips offering the best and worst ways to ask out somebody to Prom. Maybe this could be the second edition of “Ask Neha”?
Interviews: juniors and seniors who have either been asked to prom or have asked others to prom to talk about their experiences and can offer advice for the best ways to ask people to Prom.

NEWS
-Exposing most juniors’ spring break rituals: the College Trip. Similar to Hannah’s idea, This article would discuss the meaning and intentions of college tripping and why so many MA students (and students around the country) travel.
Interviews: various juniors planning a nationwide exploration of various colleges and universities, various juniors who may not be planning college trips, the 2 Jennifers (Jennifer Blake and Jennifer Christensen), maybe some seniors who can talk about their experiences on their college trips.

OP/ED
-One article idea for the Op/Ed section could discuss the common trend of all-school emails and how they (if at all) affect the school community. Is it a good idea to send out emails to the whole school? Does the subject of the email (lost items vs. club announcements) make a difference?

Article Idea: (Features) RELAY!
Must Interviews: Runners in the relay (students and teachers), XC coaches, Relay organizers
Why: On April 30th, a team of 12 MA runners is planning on doing a 196 mile relay from Calistoga to Santa Cruz. The race raises money to support organ donation so each runner needs to raise nearly 130 dollars and this piece could be about the runners’ effort and their journey on this insanely long relay race.

Article Idea: (OPed continuing on Ella’s) Stereotypes of colleges
Must interview: Seniors, the two Jennifers
Why: I think applying to college has been a journey for many seniors, and as the junior begin, they are starting to visit colleges and I often had judements about certain colleges before even visiting (safety, reach, party school, etc). These stereotypes can get in the way of people applying and it can be really bad for self-esteem if you keep these judgments but end up going to theses colleges.

Article idea: (Sports) Outings vs. Season credits
Interviews: Peter P, Outing leaders, sports coaches
Why: this can be about how people go about getting their 3.5 sports credits before graduating. Do students prefer school sports season, outings, off-campus sports, summer programs (NOLS)?

Article Idea: Senior Projects
Interviews: Seniors, SP advisers, Joe Harvey, Lynne Hansen, etc.
Why: This can be a how-to on any future SP AND it can be an expose on SP that have already been passed and are about to start on May 3rd.

Article Idea: (A&E) CONCERTS
Interviews: Music kids, Bob, people who went to the concerts
Why: There were a bundle of concerts, including Chorus/World/Roots, and two weeks after Jazz/Rock. This could be a critique of the concerts of how great they are. This could also be a “over the years” piece and a story about MA’s well-established Music Department.

Centerspread: elaborating a little bit off of Ella's idea, but more in general about social networking. pro's and cons like cyber bullying and the fact that it allowed for revolution in Egypt. Interviews would be students, of course, and the HumDev teachers on cyberbullying and history teachers on the Egypt thing. This is such a relevant issue today, and it would make for a really great centerspread.

News: There is an Uncensored Assembly on March 16th. maybe something to do with that- the trends and ideas people had to say, how it was compared to years past, ect.

Sports: spring sports and year-round update/recap. who are the standouts this year? what were the results? interviews would be athletes and coaches, senior athletes in particular. an interesting look at MA's athletics over this school year.

A+E: Black Box Production by the theater 3:4 classes preview. a look at what it's about and how the seniors involved feel about this being their last play at MA. Interviews would be David and Annie, theater students involved, and other students who plan on seeing the play. interesting because it would be a look at the last play for many seniors who have played a big part in the theater program for years.

Features: spring break plans and experiences. past experiences and fun stories. both teachers and students, and a range of seniors to freshmen. also, maybe teacher's thoughts of spring break. useful or not? a nice break or a rude interruption? either that or just a nice reflection of a fun time during the year. People would read this because of interest in Spring Break. we have had it for years, and it would be fun to hear some stories.

Op/Ed: Something related to the recent uprisings in the Middle East. a look at the conflicts and the people. and answering the question of where to next for them.

News: Matthew mentioned it, but I think some reporting on the unrest in the Middle East is in order. It's a very relevant issue, and one that affects the whole world. We could interview some history teachers, because I know we've been talking about it in history. Does this issue affect MA?

Sports: I think a spring sports article is in order (yeah, swimming!), but i loved Joseph's idea with the "lost sports". I think that could potentially be hilarious (or, you know, historically accurate and informative). I had no idea MA used to have boys volleyball and wrestling. So, two little ideas I may have kind of stolen from other people. Spring sports and past sports. Quality ideas.

A&E: Oscars? We made predictions, did they come true? Or this may be a stupid idea, if it seems to late after the oscars. In which case...what about a piece on teachers? We all know that the student body is insanely musically/artistically talented. What about the teachers? Interviews would be Chris Alexander, Jim Baldwin (both are musical) art and music teachers...maybe some surprises?

Features: minicourse! minicourse will be over, so we can write about it! funny stories, experiences etc. We can interview kids and leaders from all different courses and get pictures! Maybe a tidbit on the open-forum brouhaha concerning outdoorsy courses...

Op/Ed: okay this is a stretch. sorry. but i was thinking about individuality. i feel that everyone at MA strives to be as different as possible. why is this? what are some opinions? this is a stupid idea. i'm sorry. college stereotypes is much better.

Centerspread: again, I take Joseph's ideas. I like the Prom idea. I think it'd be fun, and the graphics could be great. We could have some really funny things, and then get into the history, and past prom locations etc. how is prom different at MA? most creative askings (not a word)? our whole school gets a little jittery around prom season, and i think it'd make for a great read.

News: Snow Day (for real, this time)
I don't know whether or not this will be much news in a month, but tomorrow and Saturday it is projected to snow! This will be the first time since the 1970's, and it's a huge deal. If it does end up snowing, I think it'd be fun to get some pictures of the snow in the 70's and then some pictures that students or faculties get if it does end up snowing.
Must interviews: Students, faculty; maybe some faculty that was here for when it snowed in the 70's as well to compare and contrast.
Why will people want to read this: If it does end up snowing, I think this'll be something people talk about for a really long time. It's so monumental, and I think a graphic heavy piece would be really fun.

Sports: Injuries
I've talked about this idea before, but I still think that injuries in sports are really relatable and prevalent. Lorin Hom's 3rd ACL tear is a huge devastation for the soccer team. Although we've covered head injuries, I think more debilitating injuries that require surgery (like freshman Cameron... and me!) are a big deal for teams and the students who go through them.
Must Interviews: Players, students with injuries, Aaron, coaches, parents
Why people will want to read this: While it's interesting to hear about who actually has injuries, it's also very informative about how to prevent these kinds of injuries. I think it'd be a nice change of pace for the usually fun sports page, and it could be a more serious take on sports at MA.

A&E: Award Season Wrap-up
By the time this issue will come out, all of the award shows will have already been aired. An article focusing on who actually won what, the award shows compared to each other, and who the best hosts were would be a good wrap-up to the popular culture staples.
Must interviews: students and faculty about who they thought did the best job hosting and which shows they had the most fun watching.
Why people will want to read this: These are always really light, fun pieces that people like reading to stay up with pop culture. It's also a great way to learn about shows if people missed them.

Features: Wake up in the Morning Feeling Like P.Diddy
The morning routines of various students! I know this is somewhat silly and foolish, but I'd actually be curious to know. Our community is diverse, and I want to know what time people wake up, if they eat breakfast or not (and what), how they get ready, and what carpool is like (I know we had an op/ed piece about this, so maybe less focused on this aspect). Easy, fun, and I'm sure we'd get some wacky answers from students and faculty.
Must interviews: students, faculty, everyone
Why people will want to read this: Why not? It's one of those things that people look at with their friends and go "that's stupid" but then turn to later on and read. It's just funny and quick.

Ideas Part 2

Op/Ed: Inter-Grade Relationships and Friendships
I think it'd be funny to explore the ever-growing world of inter-grade relationships. This could be a comical piece, from a very opinionated writer or member of the staff. While I'm sure the relationships are serious for the people involved, the surrounding community tends to like to poke fun at the couples or taunt them. Either the opinion piece could counter this culture or could perpetuate it.
Must interviews: completely up to the writer, though I think it'd be funny to get some joke-quotes from people in inter-grade relationships.
Why people will want to read this: I feel like an article like this would get a lot of read-time (with a more satirical take). I think whoever writes it should make sure with the couples they either quote or talk about (if they talked about any) are okay with everything written.

Center Spread: Spring Preview
I'm kind of combining a lot of ideas into one; I think a super-powered center spread that delves into different facets of what spring at MA will look like would be fun. It definitely has the potential to get overloaded, but I think with the right idea-editing we could use a lot of cool, spring-y graphics to pull the entire issue together. Prom, new classes, and Uncensored could be just three of the issues we talk about.
Must interviews: everyone
Why people will want to read this: To get everyone excited for spring and out of the rut of winter. People tend to like to know what's coming up, and I think that like the winter issue it'll be a successful, fun center spread.

Avery Hale said...

center spread: Impact of Technology- The World “de-personalized”
facebook and email and phone calls. So many different ways to communicate- it’s hard to keep up! Today we are all able to socialize with each other and cmmunicate with each other, without even having to see the person. However if you really feel a desire to see the person on the other end, just video chat or skype! Want to meet a new “friend”? Dating sites, chat roulette.

(sports):Recovering Athletes
This is similar to Lena’s idea, but instead of focusing solely on the devastation injured players can cause for their teammates, it might be interesting to focus on the psychological effects injuries can have on athletes, and how the recovery process can interfere with both their sports as well as their academics. Possible interviews: eric johanson, lorin hom, Aaron, Josh Frechette)

A&E: Bay Area Concerts
A list of several upcoming concerts in and around the Bay Area. We could include artists of all the different Genres (rap, jazz, reggae, pop etc.). MA love’s music, and going to concerts is always a fun thing to do on weekends! (or school nights) We could interview different students and teachers on which concerts they are most looking forward to, or if any of them have ever seen one of the chosen artists in a previous concert, we could have them give a review on the artists performance.

Feature: Superlatives
Every year the yearbook staff puts together a page of senior superlatives to highlight, for example, the senior “most likely to go to jail” or “most likely to become an MA teacher”. Instead of featuring just seniors, we could do a piece that includes superlatives for all four grades. We could get students to vote on who they think best fits each superlative, and include comical pictures of each of the chosen students next to their given superlative.

Op/ed: Political and Social Unrest in the Middle East
A few other people mentioned this already, however, I think instead of a news piece this would be a great opportunity for an opinion article. We pretty much already know the facts about the turmoil in countries such as Egypt and Libya from other news outlets- now is the chance to personalize it and give the MA community a student’s perspective on the issue.

News: I really like Ella’s idea of deaths in the Bay Area. Like Ella said, it’s rather morbid but could make for a very interesting piece. If we could even include some MA alumni, I think that would add a whole other level of interest.

Vanessa Gerber said...

News Article Idea: As Matthew and Annie also proposed I think that it would be great to have a piece on the revolutions and unrest in the Middle East and Northern Africa.
Interviews: Derek Anderson, Betsy Muir, frosh. Chiarra who was in Egypt shortly before revolt, any other students with close ties (i.e. family, friends, etc) to events in Middle East
Why: First of all it will be informative and there is also a lot of room for some great reflective quotes from students and teachers on the situations and their implications. I also think that more is going to happen between now and when we write our articles, so it will be interesting to report on that too.

Features Idea: Green Week/Green Fest ‘11
Interviews: Mark Stefanski, Nicole Jensen, students involved in leading booths and organizing Green Fest, outside visitors/ booth leaders at Green Fest, student/faculty response to tradition of Green Fest
Why: Get opinions and ideas about environmental movement at MA

Center Spread Idea: Profile on Travis, including stories from past, hobbies, list of favorites, role at MA, goals for future of MA
Interviews: Travis (obviously), Liz?, Laurie Geisen, long-term teachers who have seen Bodie, Dick Drew, and Travis, students who have regular interactions with Travis
Why: I feel like kids at this school have a lot to say about Travis but they don’t know much about her and this could be a great place for her to share some fun, personable stories as well as share her view on MA and her role in the school, views for future, etc. I think that students would definitely read this and benefit from it, having a better understanding of Travis and also jumping off points to further a relationship with her (i.e. Lost, basketball, poetry, etc.)

Sports: Collegiate athletics programs that are being cut due to economics (ex. UC Berkeley)
Interviews: Josh Frechette, Josh Kalkstein, the Jennifers, college recruited student-athletes at MA, ties to someone at Cal?
Why: It’s shocking and sad to hear about some of these acclaimed teams being cut and it will be interesting to see if it has effected any students’ college searches or decisions

A/E Idea: GLEEk culture at MA
Interviews: Stephen Baldwin, student/faculty GLEEks, students who think GLEE is stupid
Why: GLEE has become so popular around the country and around MA and I think this could make for a fun and entertaining article about the show and people’s opinions about the show, the song choices, the drama, etc.

News
Idea: The Revolutions throughout Africa (Egypt, now Libya)
This is just an important issue to explore right now because it's the making of history. In sophomore history classes, we discussed these issues a lot and we could do an MA perspective on it as well.
Interviews: Prominent history students, Tom Woodward, other community members
Why: Even though this is far from home, it's still a very important issue that will affect much of Africa and its modern world history.

Sports
Idea: The Underdog Sports
Softball, golf, tennis and baseball just don't get enough recognition for their achievements. Many of these teams have won BCL titles in the past. More mainstream sports get all the attention, and even then not so much. This article should spotlight the unsung athletes and teams.
Interviews: Captains of baseball, softball, golf, and tennis teams and players.
Why: We often forget about dedicated athletes just because their sports aren't regarded as "as cool" as others. It's important to highlight sports that don't get as much fans and hopefully this will make people want to go to more sports games.

A&E
Idea: Recognizing Award-Winning MA Artists
While we have flags around our school gym to signify our achievements in sports, we have nothing to show for our award-winning artists. This will allow the school to see the artists that win awards outside of the MA community, like at fairs. Students in draw/paint and photography have been known to win things outside the community.
Interviews: Johnny Winston (my brother) has one awards for his photos. Ella Storey has also won for her photography. Olivia Howard has won awards for painting and Gabe Beaudouin for ceramics.
Why: It's always nice to see how well the students at MA do outside of the community. This article could highlight the important achievements by people who aren't necessarily put in the spotlight.

Features
Idea: Spring Break Vacations
This article could explore the very different vacations that students and faculty take. Utah and Cabo are extremely different places, and students visit both during Spring Break. Also, what do sports teams that are required to stay local do over the break?
Interviews: People that are going on interesting vacations (this takes some research) and athletes (I know the girls soccer team is required to stay for at least one week)
Why: We always do something that shows what the community is doing during breaks. It's fun and gets the word out about interesting vacations.

Op/Ed
Idea: Head to Head
We tried to do this with Eric Johanson and AJ Roy in a previous issue, but I think we should revisit it because it can be more successful. Rather than being argumentative, it could be a dialogue between one of the teachers on campus that has been around versus a freshman. Both would have to be opinionated, but they could talk about the things they like and the things they'd change.
Interviews: Glenn Stanfield, James Shipman, Jim Baldwin, and a freshman
Why: Rather than really being head to head, it could just be an interesting and fresh discussion that people would get a kick out of reading.

Center Spread
Idea: Spring Fever
The good things that spring brings (short skirts, spring glow, nice weather) versus the bad things that spring brings (pollen allergies, want for summer, end of year projects). This could be a graphic heavy piece with different arguing opinions about what's good and bad about spring.
Interviews: Students and faculty
Why: Spring is a big deal! It marks the start to the end of the year, and while a lot of people like it, it causes a lot of issues as well. We can explore the ups and downs of spring and even give some solutions to "Spring Fever."

Claire Schurz said...

News:
I know it has been said but I think the news article should definitely be focused on Egypt. It'd be helpful to have a concise backstory on it just so everyone knows the basics, but I think it should mainly be focused on the role and that youth and technology are playing in this revolution and how powerful this nonviolent revolution is.
Must Interviews: history teachers, Senate members, students from ALL grades
Why: History is being made right now! We need to report!

Sports:
review of basketball season and MA's fan base at basketball games
Interviews: basketball team members, coaches
Why: I have heard a lot of basketball players, especially this year, talk about how no one goes to the games anymore so this could be a way to catch up on how their season went and hopefully encourage people to come out next year and support their teams.

A&E: TV shows big finales. This could be a piece predicting how some major shows (Glee, American Idol, Gossip Girl, etc.) will end.
Must Interviews: students/faculty who are avid TV watchers of particular series
Why: It could be a really fun piece with good graphics. The newspaper will come out a month or so before shows start to wrap up so it'd be interesting to see how people think shows will end, what the major cliff-hanger will be, who will win (if it's a contest), etc.

Features: Personality Piece of a couple teachers on campus
Must Interviews: the chosen teachers
Why: There are so many teachers that I don't know very well or at all and it'd be fun to do a short personality piece on them with interesting questions about their favorite part of the day, what superpower they would want, their favorite part of MA, etc.

Op/Ed: stereotypes of MA, how MA presents itself to incoming freshman, comparing and contrasting
Must Interviews: Freshman - what they heard about MA before they came and how that compares to their experience, Dan Babior, other admissions
Why: Coming into MA I heard so many different things about what the school and the atmosphere was going to be like. I think it would be interesting to read all the different things that people hear, and then mark which ones are true, which ones are false, and which ones are somewhere in between. It would help us know better how we present our school and how other's perceive us.

Centerspread:
Student created and led clubs, activities, etc.
This could be a graphic heavy piece with the various projects that people have started or lead. For example, the Post-it Project, Dodgeball, Poetry Slam (leaders), Banana Grams, GROW
Interviews: Leigh Kinney, Dodgeball leaders, Desiree Watis and Julia Chanin, Olivia Howard
Why: I think part of what makes MA so unique is that so many students take initiative and start something that is then practiced all around campus. This piece could be honoring these people and encouraging others to do the same!

Article Idea: What’s really going on in the cafeteria
Must Interviews: Cafeteria workers, Lynne, students who regularly eat at the cafeteria, students who rarely eat at the cafeteria
Why: I feel that there seems to be confusion surrounding the cafeteria as to why they charge so much for their food, whether students who get financial aid get a discounted lunch, etc

Article Idea: Preview of Summer Blockbusters
Must Interviews: This is where I’m stuck…not really sure who to interview for this one, possibly student reactions
Why: Most of the movies coming out in the summer months are sequels to other blockbusters. I think it would be interesting to look at the similarities between the movies (in terms of content and cost factor).

Article Idea: Alumni Interviews
Must Interviews: Alumni, faculty who have been here a long time
Why: This would be a profile piece on MA alums who have interesting professions or dedicated their lives to interesting causes. We could interview them and see how MA shaped what they wanted to do with their lives.

Article Idea: Unrest in the Middle East
Must Interviews: Derek, Nancy, Betsy, MA faculty and students who have relatives or recently traveled to places in the Middle East that now have social unrest.
Why: I agree with everyone who posted on this issue (probably because we feel it is the most pressing). So much is happening in the Middle East and I feel not discussing it would be inappropriate. This article could break down what the protestors want, what the government wants, and how the US or other Western nations are handling the issue.

Article Idea: UEFA Champions League Predictions
Must Interviews: Soccer fans at MA, Josh K
Why: I believe this edition will come out right before the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Soccer is a huge part of MA and we could take an in depth look at the four teams and make a prediction on who we think will win Europe’s top club competition.

Spring/Nature Issue!

Article: What is the Thoreau Chair?
Description: That's one of Mark Stefanski's titles, but nobody really knows what it mean. What is it? Why was he picked? What does that mean for MA?
Must Interviews: Mark, Travis, maybe the Board, Randi (department head)

Article: What's growing in the Garden
Description: Spring is here, what's going on with the garden? New projects, new plants, upcoming sernior projects and their impact on the garden. What does spring look like in that corner of campus?
Must Interviews: Mark, Doreen, Arthur, Liz

Article: Spring Sport Freshmen
Description: Who are the up and coming freshmen, especially in spring sports? Who has shown promise? Talk to coaches to find out, look at a few. Maybe one from each sport, maybe just a couple total.
Must Interviews: Coaches (Don, Lisa, Geoff, Golf) Students (Devron, I don't know who else: that would depend on what the coaches say)

Article: Spring Shows
Description: What are the new TV shows and movies coming out? Instead of looking at the finales, look at new shows for this season. Plots, popularity, new stars.
Must Interviews: Opinions from the community, maybe hum dev teachers for some media literacy, this one would have fewer interviews than others.

Article: Opinion about homework at MA
Description: It's second semester, getting close to mid quarter 2. How is the homework at MA? Is there too much? Too little?
Must Interviews: Travis, Lynne, Joe, Kevin, Teachers, Students

Sports: College rankings
It would be a good addition to the paper if in the sports section we add a poll of colleges sports teams that are ideal.
Why: Because it would make more athletes in the school aware of their sport.
We could interview students and even teachers.

News: We can write about how Ma has effected the bay area in the past month
This idea could lead to many senior projects that could go public. It would reflect on MA and give the public (if they read it) an idea of what we do here
We can interview students and the people of Marin.

Idea: We can write about the accomplishments of our top students, and have them recognized throughout the community. This would stir competition between students to be the best that they can.
Interview teachers and students

Center spread: Athletics through life
If there is any teachers that still in sports at a competitive level, this might encourage athletic students to continue to compete in the sports that they love. It might encourage a higher level of dedication.

Concerts at MA:
Recently we've had a chamber gladiator concert, and anyone who attended understood the amazingness of the players. I believe that it would benefit the awareness of the MA community I in the Voice we have a chart of all the concerts for the month.
We could interview the chamber gladiators, and then copy the schedule into the Voice.

Sports: Replacement to Ping Pong?
Must Interview: Leaders of Dodge ball, Wiffleball, any other sports clubs
Why read: Ping-pong became huge at MA for a few months, and now it has all but passed. What options are there for students to have some fun on campus competitively? This could give an overview of the other clubs that might replace ping-pong.

A/E: A Review/Overview of the 3 visual arts at MA
Must interviews: Jenny, Anne, and Katherine
Why will people want to read this: This could be a way of showing more than just the paragraph provided in the course catalog about the 3 visual arts you could choose to take. The article could contain the three teachers from each class recommending what kind of student take their class.

Features: Reaction to Mini-course
Must Interview: Leaders of Mini-courses, specifically new or classic mini-courses, the students who went on them, freshmen first experiences
Why Read: This would be the follow up to the up cry about the quality of mini-courses. Was it so bad? How did the new mini-courses go? Are they viable permanent replacements?

News: Social Networking in Middle East
Must Interview: Drawing a blank here, besides maybe students or faculty who knew people in Egypt/middle East during protests.
Why Read: A lot of people don't understand the power behind social networking. They do not know what kind of power free communication can be to people outside of the U.S. and this article can address that issue.

O/P: Off Campus Dining
Must Interview: Employees at restaurants that MA students frequent, MA students that do and do not eat off campus.
Why Read: Off-campus dining seems to be a thing that only a small percent of the MA students regularly participate in. This could be a way to share/review restaurants off campus that very few people know about, including places that are cheaper than the café, or just interesting choices with unique menus.

News: Earthquake in New Zeland
Who would want to read this: Students and teachers who are interested in natural distastes. People would want to read this because California has many earthquakes. We could relate it back to the San Francisco earthquakes and compare with a cool graphic.
Sports: MVP Winners through the season this year. We could do an article about all the athletes who won MVP this year. People would want to read this because we are honoring the best athletes at this school!
A&E: Fashion week. Fashion week is going on right now in NYC. It's the first time fashions are shown in 2011. Any students who love fashion would love this article. It would also have cool graphics. We could write about how the outrageous fashions translate into more, subdued fashions on campus.
Features: Overheard. I think we should bring this back. It was so successful both times we put it in the Voice. Everyone who likes to hear a good joke loves the overheards.
Op/Ed: Do teachers give out too much homework? I think most people would say yes, but there could be a student perspective and a teacher's. (It could be one who is known to give out a lot.) People would like to see the difference of opinions between student and teacher. Both students and teachers would enjoy this.
Center Spread: I think the middle east is kind of a no brainer, but maybe another idea could be clubs on campus and the new leaders that were chosen for leaders of the clubs next year. People would be interested to see who the new leaders would be and what ideas they have for next year.

Article Idea: Christie and Amo.
Christie will be getting up at assembly and reading a piece on Amo. I think it would be interesting to interview the deans and travis about their reactions to this. In addition we could interview students.

Article Idea: Big upcoming concerts.
We could do a piece on upcoming concerts in the bay area for one Lil Wayne is coming to Oakland in april and many more big artists will be coming through the bay area as well.

Article Idea: New Albums coming out.
A lot of huge albums will be coming out soon and it would be nice to have a list of some for the students to keep track of and maybe some facts about each one or the artist.

Article Idea: The rise of rowing.
Why has rowing become so popular in Marin? This would be a great piece to do to show why it has become so popular.

Article Idea: Upcoming styles at MA.
Trends have changed at MA and what are the new popular ones? We could interview teachers in addition to students.

News: Trying to get seconds in the cafeteria: I have recently heard people having a hard time getting seconds or that you cant get refills with things such as salad. Why: there is often annoyance about issues related to the cafeteria, but it would be a good idea to confront problems rather then let them smolder beneath the surface.
Interviews: Maya Hallstein, Sean from the cafeteria.

Sports: How people get P.E. credit besides sports and dance. Ex: working out on own or at a gym, participating in outings. People would be interested in this, because there is so much focus on sports and teams it might be interesting to hear from people who have to stay active on their own, or struggle to complete PE credits.
Interviews: Jordan Conway, Marina Pickrel.

A&E: The origins of Prom: When did the tradition start / come from. Is it remnants of the old time formal dances or has it always been considered an important right of passage. It would be interesting for readers because Prom is such a big deal for people, it would be interesting to learn where the tradition comes from.
Interviews: Random students on campus to get a general perception. Teachers who have worked at different schools with Prom (Jared Barid, Travis).

Features: There is a 3rd kind of Motivation: A book called Drive discuses how people are often less motivated and creative when paid or have a possible award. Look at how this applies to MA and the role grades often play as the main incentive to work hard. This may be the cause of seniorities, no real need for good grades, therefore loss of motivation. Why: people might be interested to learn more about what motivates them and how to change strategy of incentives.
Interviews: School therapist, college councilors, range of teachers (Nancy Hoffman to Jay O’Malley.)

Op/Ed: Our Generation will save the world! A look at the pressure put on our generation to solve world problems. The environment, the economy, poverty, these are all problems we have inherited. Why: See how people feel about this responsibility. Can we do it?
Interviews: Some general students from the community. In particular leaders of causes such as CSC, and eco-council.

Center Spread: Jobs
Look at peoples after school and summer jobs. What people have learned from these experience, funny stories, good places to work. Why: Because there is a lot of emphasis on after school activities and sports, but work experiences are often overlooked as an important aspect of high school.
Interviews: Emily Lewis, Cara Neal

Lena’s morning routines idea
I really like Lena’s morning routines idea. I tihnk it could be interesting to interview students and teachers who come from all different areas (i.e. East Bay, SF, Marin, West Marin, etc.) to find out their morning routines. It always amazes me to find out that a classmate of mine wakes up at 5 :30 every weekday just to get to school on time.

Features : Teen philanthropy
Many, many students at MA are involved in community service/philanthropic groups and programs, but their good deeds often get lost in the long CARE assemblies. An article featuring MA good Samaritans (probably best those who have not presented at an assembly) could give them the commendations they deserve.
Who : Start with Lauren Toker/Vielka to get list of students they know who are involved, and go from there.

A&E : Teacher catch phrases
I know a lot of teachers have particular phrases that they say to begin or end their classes, and it could be interesting to profile these teachers.
Who : Mark Stefanski, James Shipman (I know that they both have pretty well-known ways of beginning/ending their classes)

Sports : Assassin Recap
I think it could be kind of a fun piece to feature Assassin in the sports section by featuring the action side of it. I’m not exactly sure when Assassin is beginning/ending, but the timing could work out and be relevant.
Who : Winners, top contenders, first team to be eliminated, Eric J.

Center spread : Middle East, but focus more on how it is a revolution of the younger generation. Does our generation have the potential to change things in such a dynamic way ? This idea is similar to Jenelle’s, and like she said, could also work as an op. ed. piece.
Who : Senate (leaders of tomorrow ?), students in Internation Relations class, etc.

Sorry I'm so late -- I've been having serious internet and computer issues recently. Anyway...

1. Target in San Rafael - Op/Ed
Shops and restaurants all over San Rafael now have a sign in their window
which reads "No Target in San Rafael." This would be an interesting
article for anyone who goes off campus, as it could result in their
favorite lunch spot to close. Interviewees could include owners of shops
who oppose Target, students who oppose it, and students who would love
having a Target.

2. Spring Break Plans (Already mentioned by many) - Centerspread
Many students at MA are avid travelers, while others like to stay home.
Where are people going for Spring Break? Is anyone leaving the country? This
would be an interesting article for anyone who may be traveling. Interviewees could include different students from around campus,
and maybe a poll could be taken about popular destinations, if you're seeing family or not, etc.

3. The New Face of Starbucks - Features
For the celebration of it’s 40th anniversary, Starbucks will be reinventing itself from the logo to their products. The changes to the brand will begin rolling out in March, but I think it will still be relevant in April. This has to do with MA because of the popularity of the brand and the close location of the store. This article would be interesting to students who frequent the store, or even those who are just there occasionally. Interviewees could include students who are at Starbucks enough to care about the changes.

4. Amo (As suggested by Greg and Everett) - News
I think it would also be interesting to get the view of not only people here, but maybe Amo as well. It seems to me he never really got a proper goodbye, and this could be the perfect setting in which to give him one. I think it would be good to get his voice in the article as well.

5. Big Albums Coming Soon (Building on Everett) - A&E
It could be interesting to do different sections on different genres for new albums. IE Rap: Dr. Dre - Detox, Lil Wayne - The Carter IV. Pop: Lady GaGa - Born This Way, Britney Spears - Femme Fatale. etc.
