Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.

Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

Week 29: Last March Post

It is March Madness, so let's go mad and talk about sports!!!!

1. A phenomenal article on an up-and-coming basketball player. There's only one problem: he's only 13. Eek. A great feature. Excellent graphics as well (try to look at the electronic edition, if possible) with great repetition of elements. What do you think?

2. Another solid profile piece, just a wee bit shorter. A long, long time ago, Harvard beat Stanford (the long time favorite and former champion) in the women's basketball final. This piece gets into how they won. What do you think of the perspective of the piece? The style? The structure?

I loved this article. When I first started reading it, I was worried that I wouldn't relate to the sports aspects of the story but I quickly realized that the writer was just using the lens of this game to describe an amazing woman and her incredible outlook on life.

I love the fact that this coach was able to inspire greatness in her players by preparing them to be mentally fit to conquer the game. The mental aspect of sports is often overlooked but is arguably a much larger hurdle for most players who work to get to the top of their game.

Not only is the story very inspirational, but I loved this writer's method of creating a sharp, interesting profile. The structure flip-flopped from statistical to personal and from sports-packed back to intimate which kept me intrigued throughout the piece and eager to learn more about the career of the Harvard coach. I think this writing style is one that we should all try to emulate more - to use one moment in life to provide a window or door into a much larger story and view of someone.

There are a lot of people in each class and on the faculty that have amazing stories to share and we should work harder to find them and provide them with a place to be shared with the rest of the community.

"Alonzo Trier is in the Game"

This article was very interesting because instead of feeling completely in awe of the subject, I also felt a little sorry for him. The author managed to write an in depth profile on a specific athlete while also exposing the intense culture of "grass-roots" basketball. The article provided a lot of social commentary on how we treat youth today and the high expectations and standards that are put on kids. I, not being a sports afficiando, had never known about this basketball culture, which I assume is similarly present in other sports. It raises the question of whether it is okay to put such pressure as is put on Trier on prodigy athletes when it completely changes their lives.

This article was extremely well written. It was able to go in depth on an important issue in todays society and still make my heart go out to the subject.

TRIER IS IN THE GAME

This article was written in a way that made me read carefully from start to finish. It captured a very personal side of this eighth grade basketball prodigy, while revealing the issues surrounding this kind of sports intensity. As a competitive soccer player, I am almost always surrounded with discussions and thoughts colleges and how I can improve my game. I understand the self motivation it takes to play basketball for seven hours a day as I push myself to get up at five thirty in the morning to run, and practice soccer every day for hours and appreciated how well the photographer captured snapshots of Alonzo's life on a very personal level.

I loved how detailed the article was, and how it allowed me to relate to Alonzo's life on a slightly smaller scale. It seemed that the article was quite long, but nothing was excess. I needed all of the details to step into Alonzo's shoes, while still understanding the ethical issues brought up by college recruiting and company sponsorships at such a young age.

The article was written to a standard that I hope we can admire. Many times throughout the week, I stress out over too much soccer, homework, and a growing list of academic achievements I should attain, but this article has forced me to appreciate any spare moment I get. Definitely an inspiration and the article embodies a sense of journalistic skill that I feel we should work towards every day.

Well, I would like to start off by saying that, as abasketball player, I can assure everyone that not all basketball players are this dedicated/obsessed with the sport. This child has amazing drive, and love for the sport, and those qualities combined with the support of his mother has created the prodigy that "ZO" is today.

Honestly, reading an article like this kind of hurts me as someone who also plays basketball. The sport isn't meant to played this way, and such an obsession will surely lead to a scholarship and/or national recognition, but what does this boy lose? The love of the game, the care free life of a thirteen year old?

On the other hand, as described by the author, this is the only option for many young teens living in the projects. Surrounded by drugs, violence, and poverty, a majority of young black men fall victim to this dangerous lifestyle, but a few escape due to a dream, whether it be basketball or college. With 83% of the NBA being black, it is easy for a despondent black teen, or a fearful mother of a black teen to attach to basketball as a possible future, and one with which people similar to him have had recent success. Zo has realized that the only thing between him and his dream is hard work, and although, in my opinion, he and his mother have gone a bit overboard, he is still "taking his destiny into his own hands" he may be stripping himself of the joy one experiences when playing basketball.Well, I would like to start off by saying that, as abasketball player, I can assure everyone that not all basketball players are this dedicated/obsessed with the sport. I agree with what Emily said about the second article "First Step in Becoming a Winner: Act Like One". The personal angle of the story made it much more interesting and heartfelt. Facts and dates were interspersed flawlessly into the piece, giving Delaney-Smith's profile depth without sacrificing the story.

Any decent writer (especially one from the New York Times) can research and write a profile like this. However, to have this story told from the perspective of a player on her team who watched Delaney-Smith coach every day makes for a much more engrossing piece.

I read the Allonzo Trier article and I really enjoyed it - even though it was a grueling 10 pages. I enjoyed the piece probably because it was about the dedication of a young boy to a sport that could and probably will be his ticket to a better life. However, just like Hossain it made he realize how youth sports are less like sports and more like ways of life.

I've been a coach at the JCC in San Francisco since the fall of my Junior year, and it's changed my outlook on kids sports. I played basketball there from 3rd to 5th grade, and I don't remember anything like what I saw as a basketball coach. For example, this season just ended for me after coaching three teams - assistant on 4th grade girls, 2nd grade boys and head coach of 1st grade girls. First of all, I couldn't believe someone would start their daughter playing basketball as young as 1st grade (there was also a kindergarten team). But after seeing these girls play, I realized how talented they were. Luckily, none of them are going to pursue any WNBA dreams, but that's not the case for one of the boys on my 2nd grade team.

Moze came every day at least half an hour early to practice. The kid is up to my waist, 2nd shortest on the team, but is far and away the best player. Even though they use a 9-foot hoop, Moze has the talent to go far. At his young age, he can go through the legs, make the occasional three-pointer, and put down one-handed-layups like any middle-schooler. While most of his teammates are still figuring out how to shoot the right way instead of pushing the ball with both hands, Moze is trying to drain three-pointers. I'd be more than okay with all of this if I didn't always see Moze's dad there cheering for him when he succeeded and (gently) pushing him when he failed. I really hope for Moze's sake that he doesn't become like "Zo" and become so obsessed with basketball that he loses the notion that the game is a game .

Response to second article

I am person who does not mind watching games or other sports related events. However, when it comes to reading about sports is not very entertaining for me. However, this article was different. I was really intrigued by it. I liked how it included personal stories, and he was able to connect it back with basketball. This made it a short, fun, easy read. Although it is an article about basketball, it applies for all audiences.

I think the article is well written. It applies to many people. I have not seen a lot of this writing style, and i think it should be something that we try to have also in "The Voice." I, as well as some other people, were intrigued by the article also. So because of this factor, I think that by having something similar it will create a larger readership.

I thought that the article "First Step in Becoming a Winner: Act Like One," was surprisingly interesting. The beginning kind of turned me off because it focused on the more technical aspects of basket ball. However when article changed focus to the psychology of winning and the relationship between coach and player, I found myself riveted.

From my experience playing sports, I know that the attitude of a coach can either make or break the experience for the individual player and for the team as a whole. Harvard was able to beat Stanford because of the positive coaching of Harvard coach Kathy Delaney-Smith.

It would be interesting to have an article in the Voice about how student athletes respond to negative and positive feed back from coaches.

I thought the article "Allonzo Trier Is in the Game," was one of the most depressing articles I've read in a long time. There are so many things wrong with Allonzo's life I don't even know where to begin. His story reminds me of those tragic tales of child actors who, overworked in childhood, faced major issues later in life (Michael Jackson much?).

Allonzo is obviously not being "forced" into the kind of obsessive life he leads for only passion can feed the kind of extreme motivation that he displays. However, I think it is completely sickening that the adults around him aren't trying to moderate his approach to basketball. The kid doesn't see anything wrong with his situation because he grew up in this twisted overly competitive world of underage basketball. And its not like any of his crazed coaches, parents, critics, or sponsors are going to tell him how messed up his life is.

Firstly, as far as I can tell, Allonzo has no friends. His intense practice regimen allows no time for "hanging out," the culture of competition between individuals in underage basketball doesn't exactly encourage a team dynamic, and it seems that Allonzo creates enemies simply because of the fact that he is so talented.

Second, what is going to happen to Allonzo if he doesn't make it to the NBA? A kid that practices seven hours a day after school is not going to have much time to do his homework. If Allonzo doesn't make it to the professional league for whatever reason, he's not going to have a solid education to fall back on. Even though sponsors pay for Allonzo's private school education, he doesn't have the time to take advantage of it. Allonzo's situation digs deeper into issues of social justice in the US. Quality education should be available to all children, not just to the privileged and prodigies.

Also, what about Alonzo's physical well being? At the rate he's going, Allonzo will be crippled by the time he's thirty. There is much more to life than basketball and Allonzo is missing out.

Stanford vs. Harvard

I enjoyed this article because not only was it well written, but I could also connect to it on a personal level. In my sport, tennis, mental toughness is half of the game. Proof of this is how Roger Federer, one of the greatest players of all time, has never thrown his racket during a match. I am always being told by coaches to stay positive, and yet I sometimes think that these coaches do not know how this is easier said than done.

The fact that a team of "nobodies" could beat the top team in the nation and credit it to their positive attitude showed me how the philosophy I keep hearing about really is helpful. I was also very inspired by the coach's effort to stick to her own motto and stay positive, despite her battle with cancer. I also connected with this article because as an athlete I realize how important a coach's commitment to his or her team is.

In terms of how this piece is written, I think that the author did a fantastic job. This story was obviously one she cared about, and it showed in the way she wrote. One small detail that really drew me into the story was how the author desperately tried not to wake her roommate up, but in the end was so excited that she was unable to do so.

I agree with Emily that the Voice should more aggressively seek out inspirational stories from our faculty and students. For example, the new swim coach for MA once had Dana Torres spit at her feet, only to beat her in the following race.

Allonzo Trier Article

I really enjoyed this article. The writer obviously worked for a while on this feature, following Trier and his mom around. He painted a profile of not only Allonzo and his devout basketball routine, but also the overall picture of the pre-high school basketball crowd.

I knew that middle school kids did play at a competitive level, but I had no idea that it was to this extent. I personally find it hard to comprehend how so many youngsters can be putting all their eggs in a basket hoping to make it big as the next basketball stars. The chances of making the NBA are extremely slim, let alone even playing D1. For those that have promising talent, it is obviously more feasible. Usually, basketball is not a viable means of advancing up the social ladder. Allonzo, though, has put in a yeoman's effort, and he truly deserves the best that the basketball world has to offer. One can only speculate if he is losing a part of his childhood. He may truly enjoy putting in all that time. But, how many kids are blessed with that sort of talent? Or more importantly, that type of work ethic?

Another interesting aspect of this topic is the media’s influence. The merchandised clothing and equipment that Allonzo receives is shocking. Like the article said, it is a small investment for big companies (such as Nike and Adidas) that could pay big dividends. However, these big companies greatly influence a lot of these young players. Suddenly these brands convince kids to focus more and more time on basketball and forget about more realistic dreams. The consumer is becoming younger and younger; will these kids ever be allowed to develop on their own without the sway of mass media?

Stanford vs. Harvard

I found the perspective of this piece very effective. Rarely, will a player get to write about their coach. Johnson had obviously been greatly influenced by her coach.

I think what made the piece even more effective was the progression that Johnson wrote about. Although, we do not know the full story, it impressive to think that Johnson was a highly touted UNC recruit who decided to transfer to Harvard. And the story comes full circle at the end when Johnson and her coach reminisce about the great upset over Stanford.

Also important was the failure that Johnson's senior year was. They couldn't accomplish anything that came close to topping the famous upset, but this tough senior year was not a big deal. However, Johnson's experience at Harvard was not as much about team and individual success as it was about what she learned. I, like Emily, also greatly appreciated the mental aspects of the game that were emphasized. These are things that can be applied to all walks of life, not just sports. Sometimes we must put on a facade to fight through the difficulties.

In response to the second article,

I would agree with Dami! I personally love watching sports live or on the tv, but this article was really interesting and I really did enjoy reading about a sport. This was a different experience for me reading about a sport.

I love all the personal attributes to this article which gave it most of its bulk and power even though it was a pretty short article. She was able to transform her players into winner not only by coaching them physically but mentally. 90% of any sport is all mental the other 10% is physical.

First Step in Becoming a Winner: Act Like One

I agree with everyone else about the success of using the perspective of a player to showcase a coach. The beginning was slightly confusing, but still served its intended purpose - pulling me in to read the rest of the article. Some of the transitions felt a bit abrupt, but in general I like the flow of the piece from the monumental game to Delaney-Smith becoming a coach to the end of the author's experience with the coach. I liked how the last few paragraphs were about the difficulties of the author's last season at Harvard, and how both she and Delaney-Smith pulled out in the end. However, I feel like the kicker could have packed a bit more punch.

I know I'm a little bit late in the game here for blog posts, but I was really intrigued by the article on Allonzo Trier, but also what Hossain wrote in response, to which I could not agree more. This is not the first time that I have heard about Allonzo Trier, and his story is truly remarkable. The kid has more drive than most NBA players do, and he deserves all of the endorsements and scholarships that he currently has/will continue to receive.

But like Hossain, as a sports enthusiast, this is one thing that makes me cringe a little bit. I think that its great that this kid works hard, and he should receive compensation for that work. But to have his own clothing line at 13? To have college scouts on his tail even in middle-school? This is where the money involved in sports, the millions of dollars that star players in the NBA are payed, really begins to hurt kids in the lower levels of the sport. Sure this kid deserves it, but does he also deserve a lifestyle that most NBA players can't handle in their 20s and 30s as a pre-teen? Should he have to deal with expectations and pressures from coaches, endorsement agents, and his mom? Where do we draw the line?

I really loved the article on Alonzo Trier. It was well written and just as good on my second reading. (I read the in print article when it came out). It really addresses a lot of issues such as the intensity of youth sports these days as well as the problems plaguing poor communities. At the same time however it remains focused on Trier and gives the article a human face. A feature probably could have been written about the issues this article covers but by using triers story as the jumping off point, the writer can more easily draw readers in. The is a great example of using an innovative approach to attack a less interesting subject.

The case of Alonzo Trier is just another example of how ridiculous college sports is becoming. He is not yet in high school yet he has already been in contact with college coaches and is world famous. WIth in the past few years, middle school recruiting has become more popular, started by USC coach Tim Floyd when he offered a scholarship to an eighth grader. Since then a handful of middle schoolers have received scholarship offers from major programs. This process, along with basketball players only being forced to play in college for one year, is bringng down college basketball. These processes are demeaning to the universities that take part in big time sports. What is best for the future of college sports is for recruiting limitations to be set so that it would be illegal for players to be in contact with coaches until at earliest their sophomore year of high school, and for players to be forced to wait until three years after they have finished high school to make the jump to the NBA. If athletes like Alonzo Trier continue to receive this kind of attention, NCAA basketball will continue to sink.

I press a not many places in town I in impact like and a lone a particular spots hollister france nearly the beneficence I would return to, conceded the opportunity. It's a wearying one to sponsor because so much of a unexcelled dinner is dependent on the abercrombie body and experience. I fault sharing a do to excess with virtuous friends, it's something I predominantly diminish on about. A remarkably vital go by, but a difficulties respecting everyone. If you're for everlastingly in Richmond hollister france you should hear Mamma Zu, they do incredibly undisputed Italian in a bloody unassuming space. Or you can on all occasions lately walk about the corner from our ode away and nosh a judgemental burger and fries at Can Can. They also pocket some dangerous things to transport it down. For things being what they are, this innovative bra is also wealthy to abercrombie and fitch achievement wonders under the sun transitional jersey dresses.
Physique week, the high style neighbourhood Refinery29 ran a hollister france fix, “From Uggs to Y2K, What the ’00s Meant to Us,” that examined what cultural events influenced style during that decade. (Overflowing disclosure: I was quoted in that article.) The post considered the sobering crashing of 9/11 and the technological advances associated with the iPod and overt networks. And although louis vuitton outlet we may requirement to look the other practice, it also mentioned a few cringe-worthy trends of the decade (Uggs boots here with the whole utensils, low-slung jeans and midriff-bearing tops, abercrombie slog stamps, velour sweatsuits and gazillion-dollar “It bags,” ambition on the side of starters).

With votaries and work, I just didn’t drop up the doggedness to do so. It got to the spike where hunting became annoying and not fun. I didn’t make merry abercrombie france that because I in actuality be biased to this blog and drift that less made me deem like I was origination to abhorrence it.
