This is a place for the staff of the MA Voice to engage in on-line discussion about issues relating to and inspiring good writing, reading and journalism.
Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.
Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

In each of the little snapshots of world news, there is a short summary of a more in depth article from the paper. Each headline and photo captures the reader and exposes a less talked about story. This way, we are more likely to go read the full article.
The NY Times has done a really good job of engaging its readers here in stories that challenge peoples' beliefs. As soon as a reader's morals are tested, he feels obligated to talk about the particular issue and find out what others think. In this way, people are more likely to talk about certain issues and attract more readers to the paper to find out more about that issue.
I think we could also utilize this on the Voice Website to draw in more readers. We have to use stories that people can disagree with, not just telling about something that happened. For example, we tell about an incident at school like the cups disappearing and ask readers what the appropriate punishment should be. Or we talk about how the poetry slam had graphic language and ask readers what they think the policy should be on performing poetry in an academic setting...
I think this would be a great thing to add to The Voice. As long as we stuck to issues that were relevant and being talked about already among the student body (or pointedly NOT being talked about too, I suppose), I think it would be very easy to get people engaged in all sorts of important discussions about both school-related and non-school related issues.
I agree with Olivia's point that as soon as an issue is a non black-and-white issue with multiple reasonable opinions, people are interested in sharing their beliefs and seeing what others think.
We could easily use this fact to increase readership and interest. The online format of the NY Times makes it possible to discuss issues as soon as they are relevant, and allows people to easily participate.
I agree with what's already been said...I really like the format and I think it could work really well for the Voice. I think this could be the platform for the Voice to start to engage readers over different types of media.
We could incorporate the new website and have the ability to post comments on the news briefs, perhaps. Or we could post links to the briefs on twitter and have twitter users respond.
Either way, we could get more people involved than just reading the paper. Students could be part of the discussion and that would increase readership.
Everything that has been said by Olivia, Mike, and Julia are very true, and I agree with them completely.
This could be a great future section for the Voice. Because there has been two Point Counter Points in the paper, it is beginning to be known. The two debates explored (Spirit and Open Forum) are controversial and almost equally divided in opinion among the student body. Because there are 7-8 issues per year, it wouldnt be impossible, or improbable to have a controversial debate each section in this point counterpoint format.
This is a golden opportunity for the Voice to establish a solid and consistent column that is expected and anticipated every month that the paper is released. This could be a great indication and opportunity for the paper. Lets take advantage!
I thought that this was an interesting way to explore controversial issues. I actually prefer articles like this to straightforward opinion articles.By seeing multiple perspectives of an issue I am able to more completely form my own opinion abou it.
I completely agree with spanky that this is something that the voice can utilize in the form of point counterpoint articles. It would be interesting if we could have faculty write some articles for it too.
In order to make these articles timely however, it would be better to have them on the voice website. That way when some long-awaited drama rolls around we don't have to let it pass us by due to our publication cycle.
