Why will people want to read this:
Here we go!
mc
This is a place for the staff of the MA Voice to engage in on-line discussion about issues relating to and inspiring good writing, reading and journalism.
Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.
Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

ha ha first one!
1. Features:
summer snapshots: Students at MA travel to amazing places all over the world during the summer. It would be really cool if we could do a photo spread of snapshots from different students' overseas/across borders vacations. Maybe we could also have a poll to figure out what percentage of the student body traveled outside of the country this summer
2. News?
freshmen welcome: mainly basic info about the freshmen class of 2013. how many are in the theater/music/visual arts program? how many play or plan to play sports? quotes from freshmen about how they like the school and their classes. maybe quotes from freshmen advisors and or teachers.
3. Features:
FALL FASHION PLEEEASE!: San Rafael is unique because instead of getter cooler at the end of summer/beginning of fall it gets hotter. So it would be fun to have an article that profiled three must have clothing items that would help you stay cool (in more ways than one... yeah I know, that was really bad haha) over the next few months.
4. OpEd/Features:
Class Identities: How important is a class identity to the unity of a class? Do people from different grades think their class has a distinct identity and if so, what do they think that identity is? I don't have a strong opinion about this but if someone did it could be a good oped piece.
5. Features:
New Cafeteria!: What is the student response to the new caf? What are the pros and cons? How can it improve? What does the MA faculty think? What does the staff at Epicurious think about the success of the caf so far? (keep in mind we have a month until first edition is published) Interviews with anyone who eats/works at the caf.
6. Featuuure:
Ma'at's new location! This might be kind of old news by the time the paper is printed but Ma'at has officially been moved from its old location to a spot closer to the silent room. Do students think that this has helped? What was Derik's reasoning and is he satisfied with the change? Does anyone still want Ma'at gone for good?
Here are my ideas:
1. Features
Kim Martin recently removed to New Orleans so Lauren Toker took over the Community Action job. Maybe we could interview Lauren. We could ask her how the transition is from leading Crossroads to leading Community Action. Then we could ask how she plans to lead Community Action. People we must interview are Lauren Toker and maybe a member of the Community Service Coordinators. People will want to read this because the CSC has a large impact on the school and the club is part of our entire community.
2. Sports
Since Fall Sports will be in full force by the time we get the Voice out, here is my idea: we could interview Josh Frechette and the Fall team's coaches to ask about their goals. We could also write about whether they believe they can reach the goals. If we focused on one team, it might not have a complete impact on Marin Academy so we should just combine everyone. Maybe we could do a quote from each coach about their opinions. People we must interview are Josh Frechette and the Fall Sportscoaches. People will want to read this because they will be interested in what the sports teams should achieve this fall.
3. Arts/Entertainment
This may be old news but we could combine it with new news. Since the fall play is coming up, we could interview people about the audition experience. Annie Elias says one acts will be easier than other shows. Do the actors believe this is true? We could have a paragraph on the rehearsal experience too. People we need to interview are actors in the one acts. People will want to read this because they should be curious about the one act plays.
4. Feature
Does the Eco Council believe the school is suistainable enough? If they believe it is not, how can the school improve? Does the Eco Council believe MA is heading in the right direction quickly, slowly or not at all? People we should interview are Mark Stefanski and Eco Council leaders Michael Perlstein and Jessica Fields. People will want to read this because the Eco Council is an important club in the school and some people might wonder how suistainable the school is.
5. Op/Ed
Should the school start later? Most people like to sleep late but on school days, they have to get up early unless they have an early free period. We could have a pro/con for the administration making school start one hour later and keeping the school schedule the same. Arguments for: People sometimes get back late from activities so they need more time to sleep and some people have to travel far to get to school. Arguments against: This means sports teams will have less time to practice, especially during the winter months and people in the play will have less time to combine the play and homework. We should interview students. People will read this because they care about how their schedules could be affected after school.
Just so everyone knows, Sir Frog is my screen name.
Alec
1.News:
profile on dance program this year - two new teachers have been added to the staff. How will this change the program/What are the plans for the program? What reforms have students wished for in the pst and how will these be incorporated into program this year?
2.A&E:
review of summer books: i know that a lot of people have more time to read during the summer - we could have students and teachers from outside of the Vioce staff review some of their favorite books from this summer
3.Features?:
a spread of the best decorated lockers on campus. Who puts up the best decorations? What do they reveal about people? Why or why don't people decorate lockers at MA?
4.Sports:
How will the addition of a trainer affect the upcoming season? How do students and coaches feel about it/ anticipate working with him?
5.OpEd:
MA seems to be getting more and more technically saavy- booksales are online, teachers are using less and less paper in classrooms, etc. Is this a good or a bad thing? What does this bode for the future?
On a separate note:
On senior retreat a few people wanted to know if we could do a quick profile on the upcoming senior speakers. I don't know if this would work for the print edition of the paper because we don't come out often enough, but I was thinking we could incorporate it into the website once it was up and running...
Olivia Powers
Features/A&E:
A piece on the MA students who attend music festivals (Outside lands, Treasure Island, etc.) and the culture that surrounds it. Or the angle of this could be more informative/review oriented and focus on the festivals themselves rather than the people/culture. Interviews: students who attend them (off the top of my head I can think of a number - Emily Bell, Tennessee)
A&E:
King Tut Show in SF (there is a lot of buzz around this and it's going to be around for quite a while). I think it would be a good article to write because it encourages people to take advantage of the local museums and see art.
News:
Follow up on how the english 3 program is working out. I know we wrote pieces last year about how many students were disappointed about having to take english 3, rather than electives but it would be interesting to get actual impressions from students about how it actually is. Interviews: juniors in classes, teachers (specifically inquiring about how they are designing these courses in the 1st year).
Sports:
I think that the most interesting sports pieces we did last year were the more in depth profiles of a team - have someone go to practice with them, hang in the locker room and really understand traditions the team has. I'm thinking it would be really great to do a profile on Cross Country as the team itself is super bonded, quite large and active and yet few (if any) people attend meets as fans.
A&E:
The One Acts. I know that Alec mentioned this before but I was thinking we could do more of a profile focusing on the directors and what the process is like for them, as many of them have never directed before. I also have heard that the process of haggling over the actors who audition is quite epic and maybe we could get some inside scoop on that? Interviews: directors, Annie Elias, actors... Cool piece because we could show a different side of theatre than a simple review or preview.
Also, I liked Olivia's idea on the paperless classroom thing - maybe we could expand on that and talk about the possibility of using online textbooks in the future?
1. Sports:
Freshmen hopefuls. Are there any probable sports stars in the class of 2013, and what are their thoughts on MA sports. We would obviously have to interview the few freshmen and/or their coaches and teammates. We could include just fall sports or go for all sports at MA. I guess this could also go along with Sara's idea for a freshmen welcome article.
2. Arts and Entertainment/Feature:
Summer entertainment review. What TV shows/movies did members of the MA community watch this summer and which were their favorites. Quotes from any member of the community would work for this. It might be too late for this one, but just a thought.
3. Feature:
New student senate. I'm not sure if the new freshmen reps will be elected in time, but we could do an introduction to the members of senate. Quotes of goals/plans for the year from all the reps/treasurer/secretary/vp/president would work for this. This will be nice for people to get to know their student leaders.
4. Feature:
MA's sanitation measures. With the swine flu craze still not at bay, and sickness spreading faster, is MA taking the right precautions? I noticed brand new Purell dispensers in the bathrooms; what do students and faculty think about these? Is the school doing enough? Who's concerned?
5. Feature:
Online book system. Again this one might not be as timely, but I know the new system worked great for some people, but for others, their books won't be coming until 1-2 weeks into school. Also, we could touch on the pros/cons such as it was convenient to have your books delivered to your house, but then shipping charges were also included.
1. Feature:
English Teacher, Sara Houghteling, recently published her book, Pictures at an Exhibition. We could interview her on the process of writing the book and the book itself. Some examples of questions we could ask her are: What is your book about? Where did the idea for this book come from come from? How long did it take you to write the book? Etc. This article would be appealing to the entire school because it would be like reading about and in-school celebrity. It would also be especially intriguing for those aspiring writers in MA, especially if she would be willing to give advice on how to become a successful writer.
2. Op/Ed:
Should attending a certain number of tutorials throughout the year be made mandatory? At MA, tutorials are optional for those students who were not instructed to go to them by their teacher. However, teachers are not always able to identify the students that may be struggling in that class. And those students that probably should go tutorial usually don’t for a variety of reasons ranging from: they are hungry and they just want to go to lunch or because they do not want to confront their teacher. By making tutorials mandatory all students would get a chance to address their problems in class to their teachers.
3. Feature:
The demands of being a senior can be very difficult to meet. From applying to colleges, keeping up with their schoolwork, and managing their social life. I think it would be interesting to interview a few seniors about how they are balancing all the aspects of their life and get their opinion on the college application process.
4. Feature:
This is building off of Sara’s idea of the cafeteria article. It would be interesting to find out if Epicurious is more or less eco-friendly then our previous food service.
5. Op/Ed:
Should there be website banns on the school computers? The majority of the school owned computers are available to students so that they can do school work. However, most of the time students use these computers for their own personal needs, such as facebook (any other social networking site) and games. By doing this, students may be using computers that other students could be using for work or distracting themselves from the work that they should be doing. If they want to go on facebook or play games on the computer they should bring their own.
1. A call to action: Bring the Circle Back!
(this would be a feature that would inform the newer students about the old days where the circle was the most popular place on campus.)
-We could discuss circle traditions, like circle day, and eating lunch, or playing frisbee.
-We could interview teachers and students who miss the old circle fun and want to bring it back.
2. (Very similar to Sara's idea) Students could write short pieces (2-4 sentences) about what they did over the summer, or whatever part they would like to highlight. We could accompany this with a photo of them, so that we can introduce more faces to the school. It could be a competition (if that would draw more students in?)
3. Op/Ed. The Health Care Debate and Capstone.
I don't know about all of you, but Capstone did in fact change my life (or views on health care). I was in the health care reform group where we discussed why the current system needed to be changed and possible fixes. If I had not been in this group, I would be extremely ignorant as to what is currently taking place in the Obama Administration. I am extremely thankful that I was able to learn enough to feel like I have an opinion on the topic and would love to write about how that shaped my views.
4. Feature. Senior Speeches.
Where does the tradition come from? Trends? Likes? Dislikes? Talk to teachers, seniors and students form all grades to gain insight on the exciting tradition as the year kicks off.
5. Feature. Garden Class. How many students are in the class? What exactly will they be doing? Teachers and students opinions.
-NEWS: As always, new teacher profiles are a must. For simplicity’s sake, here is the list:
Susan Aaron, history
Stephanie Ballus, dance
Naby Bangoura, dance
Trevor Calvert, librarian
Kadeidra Honey, Crossroads
Roberta Jones, visual arts
Erika Rojas, college counseling office
(and Eugenie’s return!)
-NEWS: NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) held a Wilderness First Responder class based at MA this summer, and a handful of MA students participated. It is a really awesome program and I think it would be great to cover. Important interviews: Peter Poutiatine and students who attended
-A&E: The first outings assembly of the year is about two weeks before we print, but I bet we could get a list of outings being run even before that. I would love to see blurbs about them in a sort of outdoorsy outings preview. Important interviews: Peter Poutiatine, outings leaders
-STAFF EDITORIAL: Simply put, the state of healthcare in the US has been such a huge issue affecting such a wide variety of people we need to cover it. As a staff editorial, this piece would not have interviews. (Amanda, it seems you might be interesting in writing your own opinion piece so we can definitely talk about that.)
-FEATURE: I would love to see an in-depth piece on the ACT vs. the SAT. Two years ago we did sort of a surface level thing, but it really is interesting knowing that virtually everyone on the two coasts takes the SAT while virtually everyone in the Midwest takes the ACT. Important interviews: students, college counselors, teachers of subjects that are tested for
-FEATURE: I have always wondered what is going on with the health of the MA tree. I’ve heard it is dying, but I would love to see some more facts. Important interviews: Mickey (grounds keeper), Mark Stefanski, EcoCouncil people
-SPORTS: MA keeps up the spirit, even without a football team. A short piece on how soccer seems to be our football could be interesting. (Sorry if we have already written this, I can’t remember.) Important interviews: students, Josh Frechette, Josh K (soccer coach)
1. A&E?:
The bands (soul, rock, acoustic) at MA have changed, and we could do a piece on how the returning members of the bands and the new members are working together to create good music. Bob Shleeter, returning members of bands.
2. News? A&E?:
(kind of like Neha's and Sara's) We could also do an in-depth profile freshman who are into art, music, dance, and theater as well as sports. Those who want to be in the play, and those in music to see what their hopes are of being in the MA arts department. New Freshman.
3. Features:
How to beat the heat. Do most students at MA have a community pool they go to, or a pool at their house? How many people have air conditioning? What are the ways students avoid the August/September heat wave. Various students. Polls of pools/air conditioning. (not sure if this will still be relavant)
4. News?:
Most people don't really know what the outdoor skills class does. What kind of skills do they learn? We could find out what goes on in their class, or maybe their schedule for the year, and show people a class that's barely talked about. Peter Poutiattine
5. Features?:
We could look at what students do with their free block. We could find out how many students actually use it for homework, and how many use it to talk to their friends. Are the free blocks really useful for everyone, or more so for people with after school activities? We could also interview students without a free and compare and contrast. Various students who do and do not have free blocks.
Article Idea: Staff Editorial-Healthcare
Must Interviews: None (Editorial)
Why?: As Sarah pointed out, the healthcare issue in the United States has really exploded in the past couple of months, forcing President Obama to give the issue his full, undivided attention (which of course includes a mandatory vacation to Martha's Vinyard). But really, how is this going to effect the MA community? How many of us even know the particulars of the healthcare debate itself? How many of us care? What kind of healthcare plan do MA employees receive? These are the kinds of questions that I think an editorial on healthcare should try and address in an attempt to keep it relevant to our own community.
Article Idea: Twitter Article 2.0
Must Interviews: Brad Lakritz, Ben/Tiras, Random Students, Travis.
Why?: Because Twitter was supposed to be dead by now. It started out as a novelty, turned into something of a joke, and is now a real powerhouse in the social networking business sector. But even more interestingly, the difference between Facebook and Twitter seems to represent the generation gap clearer than any other markers in society. Why is it that the younger generation is drawn so heavily to Facebook (particularly at MA), whereas Twitter seems to have a grip on the older part of the U.S. population? I know that we had a Twitter article last year, but I think this deserves some more coverage.
Article Idea: The Diva Era
Must Interviews: Josh Freschette, Various Coaches, Various Varsity/JV Athletes.
Why? Because the sporting world has turned into Divatopia. Michael Crabtree, Stephon Marbury, Michael Beasley, Terrell Owens, Dirk Nowitzki (just because I hate Dirk Nowitzki) the list goes on and on. There are so many divas in pro sports, and the invent of things like Facebook and Twitter has only furthered the perception that many athletes are simply divas. Now college athletes are demanding contracts (perhaps rightfully so) and are becoming their own brands (Tim Tebow). But where do high school athletes come in? We play for our teams, we play for victory, and many of us play for spots at certain colleges. But how does the diva attitude manifest itself at the high school level? At MA versus at other high schools?
Article Idea: Economic Misconceptions (Editor's Column)
Must Inteview: None
Why?: Because this is something that so many people discuss/debate about, yet really have no idea what they are talking about. People often look at the economic numbers for the United States and panic, tear their hair out, or start up town hall meetings and invite Fox News to show up. But really, its an issue that I would like to cover in an Editor's Column, doesn't necessarily have to be this time around.
Article Idea: Mainstream is a Negative When it Comes to Music
Must Interviews: Bob Schleeter, Dartanyan, Music Students, etc.
Why?: Because, when someone suggested that the Senior class make its walk-in to the song 17 Years by Ratatat, the overwhelming sentiment was that the song was too "mainstream" or "pop-culture". There seems to be an obsession, especially with regards to music, to try and find the next up-and-coming artist, the underground guy who produces records in his garage. But as soon as we succeed, as soon as other people heed our advice and buy their CDS and our underground protegé goes big, we turn our backs and look for the next diamond in the rough. Where has this "underground" music culture come from and why is it so coveted/prevalent (especially at MA)? Why isn't mainstream cool anymore?
P.S. I officially hate Google. For those of you who remember my issues with typing the "Word Verification" underneath my posts, well they're back again. I swear they are doing this to me on purpose. That makes for 1 rejection in 1 try.
P.S.S. Make that 2 for 2.
1. Sports: There are a bunch of student athletes at MA, and many probably traveled to competitions abroad this summer. We could find out where students went and how teams did and how those experiences changed them/what they will bring to MA sports this year. We could interview students such as Lorin Hom, her soccer team went to Nationals on the east coast and she scored the winning goal, or freshman Julia Irwin who went to the Netherlands to play in an international soccer tournament.
2. Feature: (background...I have a younger sister in public school and noticed that there was a spike in the number of kids in her grade. Could this be due to parents not willing to pay the expense of private school?) Did the poor economy change the number of applications that MA recieved this year. Interview Dan Babior and admissions department. Also, has there been a budget cut for the staff for supplies and do the teachers feel more restricted?
3. News: In town center in Corte Madera, a temporary Teens Turning Green store was opened. Find out about MA students' involvement with the project that Erin Schrode and other ecoconscious teens spearheaded.
4.Op/Ed: What do people think about the use of kindles? Is this the future of our tech savvy generation? Kindles are thinner and lighter than textbooks and are more eco friendly than textbooks on some levels.
5. Feature: Swine flu is still afflicting many people around the globe and the possibility of the MA community being wiped out for days at a time with illness, it seems that we are taking new precautions. New hand sanitizers and health warnings around the school may or may not make a difference. However, the NY Times covered a new disinfectant product called PureGreen 24. It is a safe cleaning product developed from a new molecule derived from silver, a natural disinfectant. Concerns about bacteria resistance from all this antimicrobacterials? Interview staff and students.
1. Features:
This is similar to sara's idea about summer travels, but would focus more on high school travel programs. We could interview MA students that did community service trips, language emmersion trips, or just fun adventure trips. How did these trips impact their lives and would they recommend them to other students?
2. Sports
How do fall sports compare to other seasons? Is it the most popular season and do more students participate in the winter and fall? How many students go into sports without much experience and just want to try something new?
3. Op/Ed
I'm not sure if this would be considered features or op/ed but we could write about if community service hours should be required or not. How would this make students feel about doing community service? Would it make them more resentful about having to do it or would it not matter? We could interview students who do a lot of community service in their free time or students who don't do as much and what their opinions are.
4. A/E
We could profile sophmores in the visual art department. What aspects went into their choices for their specific arts (photo, draw/paint, ceramics)? Did the rumored amount of workload have anything to do with their decision? We could interview sophomores from each art and ask them about these things.
5. Feature
This could profile the many different clubs at MA. What percentage of the school is involved in clubs such as eco-council, yearbook, and many more? Why do people start clubs and why do they join them? We could interview leaders of certain clubs and participators in these clubs.
A&E: Review of the summer reading and if the optional reading was read by many of the students. It would be interesting to interview students who did and did not read the recommended reading, and investigate the reasons why. The article could also explore if the students (freshman-seniors) thought the books that were chosen were worth reading and relevant to their studies this year.
Features: Comparison of prices between Acre Gourmet, (our old catering service) and Epicurean. The expense of the food last year was a big problem for many students and it would be interesting to see if our new catering service will not demolish our food accounts so quickly.
News: Swine Flu (I can't currently find who already wrote about it) A massive wave of Swine Flu is supposed to hit America during late this fall and winter. Good Morning America reported this morning that the CDC was expecting at the most 120 Million cases of Swine Flu during these times. I think that facts about Swine Flu and how to prevent contracting it would make a great and important article.
Feature: Best Local Restaurants in San Rafael. Since going off campus is such a popular everyday choice that the MA student body chooses, "The Voice" should create an article and map about the most popular restaurants within walking distance of MA. We can interview students about their favorite places, write about restaurants like IHOP and Bobby's diner that give large student discounts, and create a small map that locates all restaurants and their names within a couple blocks of MA.
Op/Ed Should Open Forum be held more often at MA's assemblies. So many important issues are brought up during Open Forum, but the problem is that there are only two times a year to address them. If they were held more often, would the senate be able to discuss and solve the conflicts that are brought up. With only two open forums a year, the biggest student issues are brought up, but they still never seem to be solved.
Feature
Student Drivers. Maybe get some numbers on the number of kids driving to school. Interviews with various students (different classes) about how they feel about the process of getting the permit and license. Also opinions on the 1 year restriction of not being able to drive anyone else. Is it too harsh? Is it fair? Do people follow it? Many different people to be interviewed.
Sports
Rivalries. University is often considered MA's main rival, but is this everyone's opinion? Do freshmen feel this way. Maybe we could also interview Josh F. and teachers who have been at the school for a while to get their feelings on the rivalries or any history on them.
OP/ED
At last years open forum I remember a number of folks standing up and making the claim that MA was losing its spirit. Opinions on this and more importantly how do we define school spirit? How do teachers or Travis define it? How does one even show spirit!?
Feature
I know this has definitely been done before, but as a freshman I remember that I really wanted to figure out all of the best places to eat in San Rafael. We could present a little review of each one of them and also how long of a walk they are and a price range. We could also list favorite dishes for each place from the staff.
News or A&E
"Rock and Blues by the Lake" is a large benefit concert for Novato Schools. The Headliners are B-52s and Blake Lewis and THE BOB HILL BAND (lots of MA alums) is opening. It is on September 26th which is right after the first edition comes out.
Features
San Rafael Hill is right behind MA and easily hike-able within a free block and lunch period and provides an awesome view on a clear day. There are tons of trails to get up to the top and its a nice place for a picnic. We could incorporate a map for interesting ways to get to the top and also show hidden shortcuts. Could interview Granola Clubbers who often lead hikes.
Oh... Funkipus is Riley... brilliant google.
1. Features:
MA cars: A list of the brands that MA students and faculty drive to MA. What percentage drives Pruises as opposed to a different brand? What is the most commonly driven car at MA? Last year there was an article on carpools, so I thought it would be cool to actually talk about the "cars".
2. Sports:
A summary of the fall sports last year. This summary includes how well they performed; such as wins and losses and accomplishments. Along with this there should be a list of goals this season for the team and any new freshman that look to strengthen their chances at having a great season. Any new captains for the fall teams should be mentioned too.
important students to interview: the captains of all of the fall sport teams.
3. Feature:
I don't know if this was mentioned last year, but interviewing students who have the farthest and shortest commutes to MA. Also, a map including the location of the MA student's residence, the distance to MA, and the average time it takes to get to MA would provide a great visual for the reader to take in.
4. Feature:
A comparison between Acre Gourmet and Epicurious. This comparison will contain the prices of similar or the same foods from last year and this year. Interviews with MA students and factually, and what they like and dislike about both caterers. A service evaluation on how long it takes an MA student to get their food each day as opposed to last year. This is straying away from the comparison, but I think it would be interesting to interview the staff of Epicurious and see what is in store for us this year!
5. News:
I believe this year is our first African dance program at MA. Interviewing the African dance teacher and the students involved in the class would be a good way to give the reader an overview of the class and encourage people to take the class this year or in the future.
1. A&E:
The death of Michael Jackson has greatly disturbed the music scene. The pop genre (as well as others) have changed dramatically because of Michael. This would present a nice opportunity to interview Marin Academy students on their views of the "evolution" of music. Being that many MA students take an interest in some form of music, how and why does what we listen to now influence our generation as a whole? Why has the entertainment industry (specifically the music industry) now made it easier for less gifted artists to put out records?
2. News:
Being that this is Travis' second year as the head of school, what are her goals for the year ahead of us (and the upcoming years?) Travis has worked at a variety of schools - what has Marin Academy taught her thus far? What direction would she (ultimately) like to see MA headed towards?
3. OpEd:
Marin Academy is filled with students who are nearly perfect at one thing or many (drawing, photography, science, soccer, etcetera.) Does this take a toll on students who are interested in trying something new and going outside of their comfort zone? MA stresses that its students should try as many new things as possible, but what about the students who feel their ambitions would be belittled if they were to try something different?
4. A&E/Feature:
This would be fairly similar to what is stated above (on the typical MA student's "activity" front), but, regardless, I thought it may be interesting.
Being a Marin Academy student requires a lot of energy, tenacity, and hard work. From sports to academics to dance to sometimes overwhelming amounts homework, something is always cut out of the equation. Typically, this is reading for pleasure. An article published on "Education Week" talks about pleasure reading being a thing of the past. It states, "The decline [of reading for pleasure] has serious implications for students' reading proficiency and comprehension, and also has many civic, social, cultural, and economic consequences..." Why do an unexpected amount of students disregard this activity? It would be interesting to interview a few students with their opinions on reading outside of school and why/what they do to fill the time gap that could potentially be used for pleasure reading.
5. Feature:
The geographic breakdown of the MA (student) population is:
East Bay – 14%
San Francisco – 12%
Sonoma/Vallejo/North Bay – 3%
Marin – 71%
Writing about how this breakdown impacts our school as a whole would be really compelling. This idea could also branch-off to the recent addition of our new tardy policy, and why MA has chosen to apply this now when nearly 30% of our school is made up of commuters.
1) Features:
Teachers that went on sabbatical in the past few years. We could ask what they did, whether they liked it or not, if they are happy they are back at MA, and if they want another semester, ect. I know Diana is definitely someone we could interview and any other teachers that recently took sabbatical (in the past 2 or 3 years). I think this might be important because I know that a lot of MA students don't exactly know what teachers do on sabbatical and it can give a good insight/explanation.
2) A&E:
We can do a profile of the coolest/most well designed/artistic album covers of bands in the past year. I know that a lot of cool album covers have come out but a lot of people don't really see them because itunes is so popular now. This can open up discussion about whether itunes is a positive thing or was it better when you had to go to the store to buy a full CD with pictures and information about the band. We could open this up to all MA students and they could submit their favorite album cover. Once we picked the best one we could do a small info section about the band. Music is a really important part of our community so I think a lot of people would be interested in this article.
3) News:
Different sleep away camps that MA students attend over the summer. I know that all of my friends went to camp for at least two weeks and love it. We could interview students about their sleep away camp and why they like it and what they do there. We could get pictures of them and have a small photo spread also. We could do a small profiles on the most popular sleep away camps that MA students go to during the summer.
4) Sports:
Water polo profile. Soccer and volleyball usually get all the hype for fall sports so maybe we could do a profile on the Water Polo team. We could interview the captains and other players about their goals for the season and how they are going to do compared to last year.
6) Features:
Music played at assembly. Whenever we walk into assembly, music is always playing but a lot of dance along but don't really think much of it. We could interview Nachi about what goes into his music choice and why he likes to be involved in providing music for assembly.
A&E: An article describing the Georgia Okeefe/Ansel Adams exhibit at the MOMA. What are the must see pieces? How did these two artist collaborate and translate each others work into different mediums?
Brief description of each of these artists and their careers.
Features?: Seniors favorite summers. Interview seniors on which high school summer has been their favorite, and why. What summer trips, activities, or events changed their lives once they returned to school? What do they recommend to the younger grades as far as summertime activities?
A&E: How do MA bands choose their sets? Interview bands on how they choose the songs that they play at concerts. Ask members what songs have been successful, and which they would have rethought in the past. Also, provide bios of each band and introduce incoming freshman.
Features: Uniforms. Do MA students like our lack of uniforms and our barely-there dress code? Or would some students find it easier to wear the same thing every day? Do MA students think that clothing is a representation of ones personality and a mode of personal expression or something that goes unnoticed?
Sports: In school sports vs. out of school sports. Do students prefer playing sports at school or on club/traveling teams out of school? Is it difficult to balance both?
Features: Best Restaurants in hometowns of students. Interview students on both their favorite restaurant near where they live, and their favorite restaurants near school.
1. Features:
I agree, something about where everyone has gone this summer and what they have done. I personally have noticed that over the course of the summer if you even just look at facebook's photo section there is album after album of MA student's trips. I like Sara's idea to include the snapshots and maybe we could design it like the facebook photo page??
2. Sports
Injuries! I think it may have been done last year but there could be a new aspect with the trainer that we now have. In the past month there have been three knee surgeries in the junior class alone. How can these be prevented? Interviews: the injured (Sam Abernathy, Sonya Egoin, Lorin Hom), the new trainer, and possibly someone like Silver the cross country coach who does a lot of core strength training.
3. Op/Ed
With the amount of privilege that is demonstrated through the summers that we have all had I think it would be interesting to write about how that influences our lives. I think this article could be interesting if we compared the many opportunities we have all had this summer with a couple books: Beautiful Boy (the father's story about his son who graduated from MA to become a meth addict) and The Price of Privilege (a book about the struggles that come when we do not have much to really struggle with.
4. A/E
The movie Precious is coming out November 6 and looks incredible. It is about a struggling African American woman. It even won the award at the Sundace Film Festival. I think you will all want to write an article about this movie if you just watch the trailer for this movie: http://www.weareallprecious.com/.
5. Feature
White Consciousness! There is going to be a new layout to the club this year. There are going to be student leaders for the first time ever. This is sort of a selfish article because I am one of the leaders and I realize I couldn't write it BUT it is really important to us that we change the way the club has worked in the past. WC has, in my opinion, been misrepresented (primarily by its name - which hopefully will change) and therefore has a record high student attendance of something like 10 kids.
It would be great to get this club headed in a new direction with an article!
1.) Sports:
Seeing as boys soccer seems to be the most-followed MA sport, I think that we should do a piece on how the loss of so many key players will affect the team's outlook this year. While I'm sure that this year's players are very capable, it would be interesting to get both players' and Josh's perspective on how the season might pan out without previous stars such as Brett, Aki, and Chris. This would also be a good time to get a look at some of the new freshmen players that made the varsity team.
2.)Features:
Berk mentioned doing a feature about Sara Houghteling, the English teacher. However, instead of doing one about just her new book, I think that the feature should focus on Sara's life as both a teacher and a novelist. Being in her class last year, I was able to gain a little insight into the really interesting life that she has lead so far. As a relatively new and unknown teacher, this might be appealing to the student body.
3.) OpEd:
Since the debate over Health Care is obviously at the center stage of American politics right now, it might interesting to get students' views on the different sides. We all know that MA is a very well-informed community so we should be able to find some interesting opinions. We could run the piece as small blurbs of what each person says.
4.) Sports:
Alright, so this is about the sport that I play, but I'm pretty sure that there is no rule about PROPOSING article ideas about activities that we are involved in. The MA varsity tennis team actually has a pretty interesting group of players this year. There are no Seniors on the team, but there are four Sophomores and three Juniors. This means that the tennis team should be highly competitive to repeat what it did last year--win the first MA boys BCL tennis title ever. Also, i know that the spring sports season is very far away from now so I think we could stash this idea for later...
5.)OpEd:
Seeing as Mary is now trying to go completely online with her classes, I think it would be interesting to look at something else that went online recently that didn't necessarily go so well, at least for me: The MA book buying system. I, for one, was very frustrated with this new system. Not only could I find much cheaper versions of the books that I needed on Amazon, but some of the books I needed that could not be found on Amazon were out of stock! I think that there is something to be said for sticking with a system that has proven to work. On the other hand, the new online system makes work much easier for people like Mary Lou. This would be an interesting Point-Counterpoint piece.
1. Feature
I couldn't find where the first school dance is in my planner, but I'm assuming it's sometime in October. We could interview students (sophomore, junior, senior) about what they think of the dances- I know a lot of people have expressed dissatisfaction with the dances in the past, what could be done to improve them? Why are there so many more freshmen/sophomores than upperclassmen? We could also interview freshmen about their hopes/expectations for their first high school dance, and teachers about what it's like to chaperone (and maybe what their dances were like when they were in high school?), as well as get Lynne/Travis' input about why there are those certain rules that make students dislike the dances.
2. Sports
I agree with Ruby, I think the water polo team often gets dismissed (even though they did really well last year!). We could also mention how old/small/inadequate the pool is and how MA just got a brand new field for the soccer team, but the pool hasn't seen any renovation for a really long time.
3. Feature
City Term/ The Mountain School- every year, a few students disappear from MA for a semester to go on City Term or to The Mountain School, but most people don't get to hear about their experience or even really know what these terms abroad are. We could interview students who were gone last year (like Tory and Cora) and learn more about what the programs really entail, why they chose to go, and what the highlights of their experiences were. I think this would be helpful for a lot of people (especially sophomores, who are probably the most likely group to choose to go on one of these terms) because the subject is for the most part not talked about at MA and students generally don't have a lot of knowledge about the program.
4. Op/Ed?
No Homework Weekends: discuss the pros/cons of having no homework weekends. On the plus side, it gives students an opportunity to take advantage of other types of learning besides classroom learning (outings, for example), but how many students actually take advantage of this? Would they be more inclined to if No Homework Weekends were offered more frequently (ex. once or twice a quarter instead of only once a semester)? Cons: what do teachers think of No Homework Weekends? Does it disrupt the flow of their classes/ do they run into trouble when have to scheduele tests/quizzes around No Homework Weekends? Should homework just be banned from weekends altogether?
5. Arts/Entertaiment
Fall TV: Fall means new seasons for almost all the TV shows. Profile student's favorites shows (ex. Grey's Anatomy, Gossip Girl, etc...). Do students prefer dramatic shows (ex. CSI, Law and Order), funny shows (ex. The Office), or reality TV shows (ex. Project Runway, American Idol)? Do different grade levels prefer different shows? Do boys and girls generally watch the same shows or different ones? How much time do students spend a week watching TV? What are some of the teachers' favorite shows to watch?
1. Feature
Since it is my first year I'm not completely aware of past precedents for article selection and whether a piece similar to this has been done recently; that being said I think a feature analyzing the prevalence of drugs in the MA community and the differing viewpoints faculty and students have on the issue would be very interesting. A must interview would be Lynne Hansen along with an anonymous questionnaire that could be distributed to a group of students. I can picture a really captivating graphic going alongside the article as well.
2. A&E
MA has long produced talented musicians. I think it would be nice to catch up with some of the MA bands and see how their endeavors in the professional music industry are faring. We could interview them about the record deal process and what advice they could give to aspiring artists. Some notables are: The Bob Hill Band, Electric Tiger Lily, and the Jazztronauts.
3. News
The war in Afghanistan has been droning on for the better part of my life, so I have begun to accept it as a constant. Yet recent events in Afghanistan make me think that it is an issue worth revisiting. Obama has agreed to up the number of troops in Afghanistan to fight against the Taliban rebels. and the recent questionable election has raised questions as to whether the US should take a formal stand politically. Due to the longevity of the issue I think it will still be pertinent a while from now. In relation to Marin Academy, it would be interesting to see if anyone has a family member or knows someone directly who is serving in the armed forces so we could get a firsthand view.
4.Sports
Like many of the previous posts I think doing profiles on up and coming student athletes would be a great idea. After profiling each student it would be cool if we matched them with a professional athlete that matches their style of play.
5. Op/Ed?
I think a piece documenting MA's response to Obama's first months would be interesting. We could make sure to seek out the small faction within MA that dislikes Obama and make sure to give them equal representation. Another idea is writing a pure opinion article which just exposes the counterpoint to the majority view at Marin Academy (although I don't know if you can write an opinion article if you don't actually feel that way).
1.Op-Ed
Freshman-Senior buddy system
We can possibly explore the idea of a buddy system and the benefits/cons of it. This piece would interest everyone because it is pretty obvious that there are huge gaps between classes, so this would present a possible solution. Interviews: Freshman, seniors, freshman class dean and senior dean. Lynn
2.Op-Ed
Schedule Debate: Something that has happened a lot in the junior and senior class is something where odd days are extremely laid back and even days are packed with classes. How does this happen? This would interest anyone with such a schedule. Interviews would consist of people with schedules like that, and also Joe and Karen.
3. News
There have been a lot of changes to Crossroads. I mean major changes. Maybe we could have a little story to address the issues. Interviews: Lauren + her assistant, crossroads children.
4.Feature
Revival of the circle? Recently, the seniors have been committed to hanging out in the circle as much as possible. We should have a feature on a possible return to the circle. Interviews: Select seniors, senior class dean
5. Sports
Where are they now? Where are the top Marin Academy athletes of old. Soccer stars, basketball stars etc. Interviews would include stars of old.
1. A&E:
Just this month was the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, and recently many documentaries and new films based on the 1969 music festival continue to pop up. (the movie "Taking Woodstock" opens in theatres on August 28th) It might be interesting to interview teachers such as Bob Schleeter as well as a few students who participate in the MA music department on how they feel about how music has changed throughout the last 40 years, what they like and what they don't like, and how these changes are reflected in the music performed by the multiple bands and performers at school.
2. News:
Although recent budget cuts have been happening all throughout the country, California became ranked last among all fifty states in terms of the amount of money spent on education per student in the public school system. It is interesting to see the contrast between this, and the many great things that we take for granted everyday at school. We could interview Travis on whether or not/ how much this has all effected MA even though it is a private school.
3. Sports:
The coaches at MA are usually recognized for nothing other than there ability to simply coach, but i think it would be cool if we interviewed a bunch of different coaches and did a piece on their own athletic accomplishments as well. For example, I know that the MA tennis coach Geoff Martinez competed in the US open in 1978 as well as 1980.
4. Feature?:
With the cost of living like it is, it is obvious to me that living in the bay area becomes more of a struggle everyday. However, if it happens that you end up having to move, selling your house isn't the easiest task either. I'm sure it has become a huge issue for a lot of families in the MA community, teachers and students alike. We wouldn't necessarily have to interview people who have directly been effected by the down economy, but maybe instead interview people who know others who have been effected by it and see how it has changed their lives.
5. Feature?:
As Mary informed me today, the bagel shop has recently been shut down by the health department. It apparently was so bad, that the shop next door (Mike's Bikes?) decided to find a new location. I myself went to the bagel shop a fair amount not only because it was close, but because it was cheap. I am sure many other students choose their lunch destinations based on these two variables as well, but is it worth risking our health? I am also aware of a number of other restaurants around San Rafael that are rumored health hazards, and it would be interesting to interview a few students on what they have heard and what they think about all of this.
it's avery, thats just my screen name...
Hey, I just thought I would throw another idea out there that i thought of.
Op/Ed:
Should MA require that all students have an N1H1 vaccine? If so, should MA be responsible for vaccinating the students or should the students have to do so on their own time?
The ambition of Clomid analysis in treating infertility is to establish general ovulation rather than origin the growth of numerous eggs. Once ovulation is established, there is no gain to increasing the dosage further . Numerous studies accompany that pregnancy regularly occurs during the before three months of infertility cure and treatment beyond six months is not recommended. Clomid can root side effects such as ovarian hyperstimulation (rare), visual disturbances, nausea, diminished "standing" of the cervical mucus, multiple births, and others.
Clomid is frequently prescribed nearby generalists as a "start with activity" ovulation induction therapy. Most patients should be subjected to the fertility "workup" former to start any therapy. There could be many causes of infertility in supplement to ovulatory disorders, including endometriosis, tubal disease, cervical banker and others. Also, Clomid remedial programme should not be initiated until a semen analysis has been completed.
