Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.

Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

Editor Goals

Please post 3 goals you have for your section. These goals can be design related, deadline related, or anything else. BUT, make sure these are measurable and realistic goals.

Good work!

1. No careless mistakes!! Grammar, spelling, and punctuation must be impeccable.
2. Interesting pictures! Not just someone standing against a blank wall. Photos should be dynamic and interesting, it is our chance to make people want to read the article.
3. Good titles! Our titles are often boring, we need to spice them up to match our photos and perfect copy editing!

1. Make the design more exciting by including more graphics per article.
2. Try not to make pages look text heavy by changing backgrounds or using boxes...
3. Don't use colons in every headline.

1. Make design more exciting by departing from classic 'text with graphic in middle' design and thinking of something more creative
2. Finish laying out before lunch the day that it is due
3. Don't chop off last sentence of article!

Sports Goals:

1.) Increasing my ability to think of catchy headlines. I know that especially in our paper, considering our targeted audience, that the headline is very important in attracting readers. I am aware that I do not think of the best headlines, so I would like to put some extra time into thinking of ones that would catch readers' eyes more.

2.) I would like to work more efficiently when laying out so that I am not so stressed at the deadline. Even though I am new to the editor position, the first two editions have brought me to working at lunch on the last day before the deadline.

3.) Working more efficiently also means working more independently. My third goal is to learn more about In Design and Photoshop so that I do not always have to turn to Mary or one of the other editors for help. Also, if I increase my abilities in Photoshop, it should allow me to spice up my designs for my pages, and in particular the last sports section page.

1. More interesting spread than 2 articles and 2 pictures.
2. Careful editing to avoid subtle editorializing in the articles.
3. Have the pica spacing be the same on all layouts.

1. For the center spread - compelling layout! We need to work on creating more flow and connections throughout the center spread and cover.
2. REGULATE spacing and headlines - throughout the paper.
3. Pressure writers to reach a higher standard.
4. Publish better photos, this relates to the previous point; get staff to contribute more to this.

Well I'm going to be doing the center spread, and after my experience laying out the last center spread, I have some goals that I would like to reach:

1. More Refined/Sophisticated Design: I want to try and spice up the design/layout for this edition, particularly since this edition has the MA Café center spread. My designs are usually pretty straightforward, so maybe trying to get a little more complex this time will be good.

2. Time Management: In order to meet the above goal, I am really going to have to manage my time better. This means cutting down on the amount of time that I mess around/help other people and really get down to finishing my section.

3. Breaking Continuity: While I like that we have a pretty uniform design standard, I think that the center spread is a place where we can try and fiddle with that a little bit more. So I think that trying to break up the "status quo" for our design a little bit.
