Article Idea:
Must interviews:
Why will people want to read this:
This edition will come out in late March.
This is a place for the staff of the MA Voice to engage in on-line discussion about issues relating to and inspiring good writing, reading and journalism.
Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.
Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

Article Idea: Minicourse Overview
Must interviews: Students, different minicourse leaders, etc.
Why will people want to read this: I think it would be nice to do a similar layout to the Summer vacation article we had last semester. MA students want to know about all of the different minicourses, particularly after they've been done, accompanied by photographs. This would give freshmen/sophomores/juniors a better idea of what they may want to sign up for next year and seniors a chance to look back on all of the different courses offered.
02.
Article idea: Bay Area High School Film Festival
Must interviews: Amanda (though I don't know if she's "off-limits" because of journalism), Dex, Jenny Rosenberg (?), other students, teachers
Why people will want to read this: This Film Festival is definitely a big deal, particularly for MA. I think people who didn't attend would be interested to read an article profiling the different films shown and the process behind making one for the festival.
03.
Article idea: Spring break vacations
Must interviews: Students, teachers
Why people will want to read this: Similar to 01, I think we could do a similar layout to the summer vacation article last semester. It's always fun reading where/what people are planning to go/do over their vacations, whether it be staying at home and relaxing with friends or going on vacations full of adventures. We may want to do this article for the April issue of the Voice, but it could be nice to see what a few students/teachers are planning to do. On a slightly different, quirkier note, we could do a short, light-hearted article about what to do over spring break if you're stuck at home.
04.
Article idea: MA Hosts 2nd Annual Bay Area High School Dance Festival
Must interviews: Stephanie Ballas, Laura Ellis, MA students in dance (Leigh Kinney, Neha Budhraja, Sebastian, etc).
Why people will want to read this: I think a lot about the dance program at Marin Academy remains somewhat unknown to a majority of the students. Similarly to the Film Festival, this Dance Festival was hosted and founded by MA. We could do a really interesting layout with photographs, a small profile on some of the dancers, and what happened the day of the Festival.
05.
Article idea: Obama
Must interviews: Mock Trial, Model UN, any other politically-based clubs, students, teachers
Why people will want to read this: Our school is overwhelmingly liberal. However, much has been said of Obama's course of action over the past year. Both (some) right and (some) left wing political figures and communities are frustrated that Obama has brilliant ideas yet cannot really put those words into action. How does the MA community feel about this? It would be interesting to hear a number of different students (and teachers') opinions on the matter. Perhaps we could do two bar-graphs; one of those in the MA community who were in favor/not in favor of Obama before his election, and those in the MA community that are in favor/not in favor of him currently.
Sam -- you got the class off to a great start! Solid ideas and thanks for following the format. Well done.
1.
Article Idea: (second to Sam's idea) Bay Area High School Dance Festival
Must Interviews: Stephanie Ballas, Dance directors/dancers from other schools included (Branson, College Prep, Athenian, etc.), MA dancers
Why will people want to read this: This is the only dance festival in the bay area that brings together different high school dancers and similar to last year there will be a legendary dancer (last year was Robert Moses) teaching a master class. It's an amazing event and so far there hasn't been any news about the dance program in the Voice.
2.
Article Idea: March Madness Feature
Must Interviews: Anyone interested in basketball/passionate about March Madness, and the various people who set up bracket competitions.
Why will people want to read this: It's the biggest month for college basketball and the MA community (mainly boys) can get quite obsessed with it. They hold bracket competitions where money can be won and constantly discuss standings. I think it would be a perfect out-of-school, yet still involving MA topic.
3.
Article Idea: Test Calendar/MA Workloads
Must Interviews: Joe Harvey, Faculty (John Hicks who always uses the calendar, and others who don't), students
Why will people want to read this: The past week and the week coming up have been crazy for a majority of MA students with 2 tests, a quiz, and an oral presentation on the same day, etc. The rule is that you can get things postponed if you have more than 2 big tests/assignments on the test calendar, but so many faculty don't use the test calendar making it very hard on students. They have recently tried to revise the calendar and it will be interesting to see if there are any improvements.
4.
Article Idea: Assassin Recap
Must interviews: Eric Johanson, Lynne Hansens, other students who played
Why will people want to read this: Pretty much the entire school is currently involved with assassin. Even if you aren't on a team, you have your own alliances as a neutral player. I'm guessing that it will be over and there will be a winner by the time we release this issue. But if not this can be an update/overview of what the best strategies were, if it was fair, etc.
5.
Article idea: Op/Ed on Summer Schedules
Must Interviews: Students who do summer programs/internships/camps, Lynne Hansen
Why will people want to read this: In middle school summer used to be about actually taking a break from all things related to learning and just relaxing. In high school it seems as if it's more about doing things that will look good on your college application. Is this good/wrong? Is summer really still a break at all?
Oh an addition to the Summer Op/Ed article idea:
- This is a good time to do it because most people plan out their summer plans around this time.
1. We need to do something on Coach James Baker:
He is the assistant coach on Varsity, and he is helping our team dramatically. Not only does he know basketball, but he respects our school so much, and looks at MA as a Michael Jordan standard of education. In addition to that he is the funniest coach I have ever had. It's stupid to miss out on this guy. He can really tell people what is good about MA. Interview Frehsman, JV, and frosh players, and Coach James "B-luh" Baker
2. Cafeteria: Coming back to the past edition on the school's catering food service people, who I can't remember their name, they have made a lot of improvement in catering to the students needs, and doing a lot to keep us happy in every way possible. I think we should revisit how the opinions of students have changed on this subject. Interview tons of kids, I know im totally pleased with the food service now, so we should ask a lot of kids, especially on the subject of getting seconds for free and all that.
3. Assassin :
Yeah i know its already been covered, but I think we should definitely go back and look at this. This kinda got out of control in some areas, but I feel that we should definitely have it become an MA tradition. We could pick out flaws and strengths of what went well. We could definitely interview some teams, and maybe the winner/ final teams
4. This is a general one, but its really important that we get articles proposed and we write articles, that are a bit more on the risky side. I've been talked to by many students at MA and they have really not liked our article ideas. If you compare our paper to that of Redwood's, they have a lot more articles, which students would enjoy as opposed to really even education in the economy. Articles really need to be varied in that sense, where we can definitely have those intellectual ones, but its really important to come up with some creative ones, that kids will remember for a long time.
Open forum:
What happened to open forum at MA? Those assemblies used to be my favorite ones of the entire year at MA, and suddenly they just disappeared. I want to know why, and I'm sure some other students do to. We should definitely talk to Lynne about this. I mean, I feel like they were a great way for kids to express themselves and were really funny too.
1.
Article idea: Super Bowl
Must interviews: any students that are interested in the NFL or have a passion for either the Colts or the Saints
Why will people want to read this: People will want to read this simply because it is the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is an important American tradition where family and friends congregate to relax, eat, drink, and most importantly watch the game. I think I mini bio of each team: their record, accomplishments, and history in the Super Bowl will be important in informing the MA community about this glorious athletic event.
2.
Article idea: Senior Project
Must interviews: Joe Harvey, Lynn Hansen, and other faculty
Why will people want to read this: There has been a lot of buzz of what the senior project is going to be this year. I think it is important for the MA community to know about these rumors and which ones are really true. Also, we could interview past faculty of what the senior project used to be in previous years, and their opinion of how the changes have helped or degraded the quality of senior project. Will there be more or less seniors participating in senior project this year due to the numerous restrictions placed on it?
3.
Article idea: Profile on the new theater teacher
Must interviews: students, new theater teacher
Why people will want to read this: MA loves learning about and meeting the new faculty on campus, and I think this will be a great way for the new theater teacher to get his name out. This will allow people to get a chance to meet him etc.
4.
Article idea: the earthquake in Haiti
Must interviews: all MA students and faculty
Why people will want to read this: Well first of all this is a great tragedy and although this has been in all the news, I think it is important for the MA voice to right about it. Why? The earthquake has to affected us in some way, and we could possible talk about MA's earthquake plan if this were to happen in the near future.
5.
Article idea: Overview of the two juniors that went to a different school for the past semester.
Must interviews: Adriana Banta and ChloƩ Ouyang
Why people will read this: It will influence others that are contemplating going to the other schools MA offers for a semester. Also, it will allow ChloƩ and Adriana to inform the MA community of their experiences.
6.
Article idea: Assassin overview(I know others have said this but I have a good idea)
Must interviews: participants of Assassin, Eric J, and Lynn
Why people will read this: Well frankly, because everyone in the entire school has been involved in this game in one form or another. After the Assassin game commences, we should create a large bracket of every team in the game that tells the reader who they were going after and the captain of the team. Since many people have been trying to create a list of all of the teams etc, it will be very cool for their to be an Assassin bracket that the Ma students can look back on.
1) article idea: Second Semester Seniors
Must Interviews: Joe Harvey, lynne hansen, any seniors
Why will people want to read this: By the time this edition comes out we will be in the final quarter of this year and I'm sure a lot of seniors will already know which college they will be attending. It would be interesting to see from Joe or Lynne how this has affected seniors as far as either school work or behavior, and also to get different seniors perspectives on what they think it means to be a "second semester senior" and how the first and second semesters differ in their senior year either socially or academically.
2) Article Idea: Spring Sports
Must Interviews: Josh Frechette, any spring sport coaches/athletes.
Why will people want to read this: Spring sports officially start on February 8th, so by the time this edition comes out we will already be more than a month into the spring sports season and it would be interesting for people to see what the coaches predictions are for their teams and how they think the season has gone thus far. Also to get a players perspective on how they feel there team has been developing throughout the season and what their hopes are for the rest of the season would be interesting.
3) Article Idea: Math Night
Must Interviews: Kevin Reese, students participating.
Why will people want to read this: Math Night is something I always hear about either in assembly announcements or from flyers on the bulletin but I still am a bit unclear as to what it's all about. I also don't know anyone who has ever attended... This year it takes place on March 16th, so even though it will have already happened when this edition comes out I think a lot of people would be interested in how this event plays out and what the turnout is usually like, and getting the inside scoop from Kevin Reese may make students more inclined to go and see what Math Night is all about.
4) Article Idea: Teachers Views on Assassin
Must Interviews: Jamie Collie, Lynne Hansen, other teachers who have been involved in the game some way or another.
Why will people want to read this: Neha already mentioned an idea to have an assassin "recap", but I think it could also be interesting to get perspective on the game from only the teachers. It's no secret that the game is pretty controversial with some of the teachers yet I know there are teachers participating in the game such as Jamie Collie and possibly others. I've heard so many different opinions from teachers that people might be interested in seeing which teachers enjoy the game, and which think it is a distraction/ dangerous. I know that last week Lynne Hansen nearly got barreled over by a sophomore while he was trying to "escape", but at what point do they draw the line?
5) Article Idea: MA Workload
Must Interviews: Joe Harvey, students from each grade, teachers who are known to assign a lot of homework.
Why people will want to read this: This one is also similar to Neha's idea but I do think it is necessary to address this. Although you are supposed to have only 2 tests/or "big assignments" due for one day, what happens when you have 2 quizzes, an essay, a presentation, and a big test all in one day, and on top of that, more homework due. It seems like that would be the equivalent to 3 tests if not more, and I know that this much work creates an unnecessary amount of stress for students. Seeing what Joe thinks or what teachers think about coordinating more with the amount of work they assign could be helpful to everyone.
Alec
1. Sports: Is the interest in these sports higher than basketball and how is the turnout to the spring sports games compared to fall and winter sports? People we need to interview are a team captain, a team member and a random student to see if he/she is following sports.
2. Features: This one has probably been on my ideas post forever but here is why I believe even a short blurb should be mentioned about Mock
Trial in the Voice:
The model UN is about the same size as mock trial and they are similar clubs so if model UN got a profile, mock trial should definitely get one too. I talked to some other team members who I would prefer to leave
anonymous and they wondered the same thing. Even though mock trial is basically over, we could have an article about how we did this year and how we plan to improve. Also, I have noticed alot of non members are interested in the
mock trial but do not know what it is about and an article about the mock
trial would certainly clarify any confusion. Alot of people I know who
are not on the mock trial team but hear about it do not really know what
mock trial is but they want to. Besides me, Andrew, Berk and Lauren are
the other members of the Voice who are on mock trial so this is not just
a small group of people. Also, the mock trial was formed in 2007 by Talia
Rosenberg '09 and she was the leader of the team for its first two years.
An interesting question would be how the team is working without Talia at
the helm. She worked extremely hard to create this team and she has done
a great service by helping students expand their knowledge of law. It
would be interesting to get the faculty advisor, Travis Brownley's
perspective on the mock trial too. She participated in mock trial when
she was younger and if there was room in the article, we could talk about
her perspective on it. I think people would be interested in any article
that involves Travis Brownley. Another facet that would draw readers is
the rivalry between Tam. They have won the state championship in 2005 and
2009. They always win 1st place in the countywide tournament so we have a
rivalry with them. Most people are interested in reading about rivalries
so highlighting the rivalry would draw readers. They should be interested
in an article that would talk about how my mock trial plans to combat
them and that talks about our hopes for the competition. Overall, mock
trial is a club that has 20 members with a very intriguing backstory that
I feel is underepresented but people would be interested in it.
3. Features: Minicourse: I know this is close to Sam's idea but I think we could definitely do a minicourse recap. I think the focus should be on what minicourses were the most well liked and why. Also, we could include quotes from students that showed their favorite part of minicourse. People to interview would be minicourse leaders and random students.
4. Features: I know other people have menitoend this subject but I think an article on assasin would be great. I think we should focus on the most daring escapes from assasin and/or how it felt that someone was chasing you. I think devoting time to strategies of assasin is a good idea too. We can interview people who participated in assasin.
5. A&E Since there is no spring play unless you are Theater 3 or 4 student, what are the people who did the fall and winter play doing in their more open afternoons? Also, what do they think of more open time? Do they miss the rehearsals or are they happy they do not have so much time taken up? People we need to interview are students who were in both plays this year but are not in Theater 3&4.
Marshall
1) Senioritus
Must Interviews: Seniors, Senior Dean, Teachers
This profile piece would light-hearted and fun. Its a common reference in senior speeches and it could be interesting to hear the perspective of current seniors. MA seems lenient on how many days we get off from school, so why should we not add Senioritus to the long list. For other facets of the article we could include analysis of grades of seniors during second semester compared to first and other ideas.
2) The Plate and Cup Project:
Must interviews: Lynne, Cafeteria, Head of Finance of MA (controls budget)
The community seems to have failed at returning silverware and dishes this year. We're missing a substantial amount of items from the cafeteria and now action is being taken. We need to find more details of this experiment, pertaining to how long it will last, purposes etc. It is going to have a big effect on students (possibly faculty if they are included) and their thoughts of eating on campus, and utilizing the new seating area in the cafeteria plaza.
3) Assassin:
Must Interviews: Eric J. Lynne, Assassins
The last four days of my life have been substantially different to my normal days at school. (Even though I am not playing assassin) My phone has been taken away for 24 hours trying to save (someone) in english class, I have had people take my clothes to look like me and help me escape from class, and I have stalked people at levels higher than ever before. (I once again will reiterate that I am NOT playing assassin) It has changed the atmosphere of the once trusting school and has affected everyone. A piece on it is absolutely necessary.
4) Mac vs PC, Verizon vs AT&T, Zune vs Ipod
Must interviews: Brad, Students
Laptops, cellphones and MP3 players are extremely important in MA culture and people will like to know which electronic systems are the most popular. It would be interesting to do a short piece on what type of system the majority of MA uses and why. We can also get incite from the technology department about their views.
5) March Madness (From Neha)
Must Interviews: Basketball team, general population of MA
Some watch every game on their TV or computers, some are involved in brackets online and at school, some have money on the big game, and some don't give a "flapjack". People will want to read this article because of their general obsession about this annual tournament, and to see others views on in. Its an important part of March, and the championship game will be coming soon after our release. We could possibly to a MA Voice projected bracket as well.
1. baseball team:
must interviews: captains ross bronfenbrenner and conor flemming. coach tom.
Why: baseball is beginning to become one of those under-the-radar sports teams at MA. it's a great experience to come down to albert park and watch a game at night. the team is going to be pretty good this year, but is still going to have lots of new faces out there.
2. assassin
interviews: eric, lynne, joe, teachers
why: i would like to see this more as an op-ed piece. it creates absolute mayhem which is obviously easy to write about in an interesting, more opinionated (potentially comical) piece about why or why not assassin is a good thing.
3. media misinformation/consumer knowledge
interviews: anyone who buys anything
why: marshall's idea got me remembering exactly how much i get irritated by fine-print/misleading commercials that are as vague as possible as to attract more buyers (at&t). there's a growing culture of dog-eat-dog advertisement in which companies are forced to attack each other in order to stay afloat. this could include musings on how people can find information to make informed decisions as consumers or in a greater sense on how such happenings are indicative of great issues that capitalist society or america may face (in terms of a global economy, politics, etc).
4. march madness
must interviews: whoever is organizing the bracket pool for this year's tourney, interested faculty and students. (not interested faculty or students?)
why: a huge portion of (male) MA students are invested in this, both personally and economically. it may be useful and interesting to try and address why people care about it as much as they do in the article.
5. outings!
interviews: peter, other outings leaders and frequent participants. also anyone who has seen the changes in the outings department over the last 4 years.
why: there has been a huge spike in interest in outings this semester. topics could include why people are so interested now. also, roughly half the outings, notably all of the backpacking trips or those that go far away, are completely overloaded. the waitlists are enormous. on the other hand, people don't seem to be interested in trying new things or going on outings that are closer to campus. this could be a nice space to include some information about the purpose of outings and what peter hopes people should get out of it.
Jamie Muresanu
1.
Article Idea: Spring Break/ski week
Must interviews: Lynne Hansen, Joe Harvey, whoever makes the MA calendar for the year, and students
Why people will want to read this: I already mentioned it before but now I think this article will be more timely. I think people will want to read this because I'm sure many students have wondered, as I have, why MA has a two week spring break and no ski week. This schedule is different from all the other schools, so it would be interesting to look at why MA does the calendar this way, and look at the pros and cons as well as students' perspective.
2.
Article Idea: College Tripping
Must interviews: college counselors, juniors, seniors
Why people will want to read this: many/most juniors spend part or all of their spring break looking at different colleges all over the country. It would be interesting to get advice on what to look for on a college trip, the best recomendations/tips for college trippers, and what seniors who went last year would recommend/suggest for students going this year. This article would not only be helpful to juniors, but sophomores as well, who will be going through the same process next year
3.
Article Idea: MA homework/workload
Must interviews: Joe Harvey, Bryn Bliska/Ben Bogin, students
This is somewhat similar to Neha's/Avery's, but every day we have been taking those surveys about homework, sleep, and activities, and it would be interesting to publish the findings of the surveys and what (if anything) MA plans to do differently as a result of the survey.
4.
Article Idea: Junior Project
Must interviews: Bill Meyer, Joe Harvey (?), juniors, seniors
Why people will want to read it: Junior project has changed a lot since last year, and it would be interesting to compare/ contrast the two programs, look at why the program changed, and explain to unerclassmen what junior project is
5.
Article Idea: Mock Trial
Must interviews: mock trial captains, coaches, and students on mock trial
Why people will want to read it: I agree with Alec that it's time that mock trial got a profile in the Voice, especially given that Model UN and many other clubs have gotten profiles this year. I think he already did a pretty good job of saying why it should be included
Marshall Levensohn x2
6) Toyota Recall
Must Interviews: MA Toyota Drivers, Toyota San Rafael
Tons of people at MA drive the Toyota cars that have recently been recalled for faulty gas pedals. The malfunction of these parts have led to deaths and many now are not driving their Toyotas at all. It will be interesting to see how this has affected MA.
Katie Eiseman said...
1. Article Idea: Uncensored
Must Interviews: All of PR, all leaders of student equity groups, Joani and Sanjai
Why?: Uncensored is going to be so raw this year! We can do a preview on all of the workshops and a brief description of how the structure is different than previous years. I think people will want to read it because it is the kind of thing that is popular at MA and also there are so many people involved in it that almost all MA students have a friend involved which makes them want to see what's going on.
2. Article Idea: Math Night!
Must Interviews: Kevin Reese, Other math teacher, students presenting
Why people will want to read this: Kevin Reese makes those announcements and I know that I don't know what it means. It could be great to do a piece that gives a "sneak-preview" of the upcoming math presentations
3. Article Idea: MA's Playlist
Must Interviews: Students with diverse music taste
Why?: I remember an article like this from when I was a freshman and I remember taking the newspaper home and downloading all the songs. MA loves new music! Let's share!
4. Article Idea: Spring Sports!
Must Interviews: Coaches and players
Why?: I know we talked about a couple in the past edition but now each of the teams should be formed so we can do a preview of all of the teams including their players, coaches, goals for the seasons and maybe some preseason results!
5. Article Idea: Opinion piece on Senior Speeches
Must Interviews: Bill Meyer, Seniors, general MA community
Why?: Everyone is talking about the standing ovation inflation -- but why? Is it because the speeches are getting better or just because it has become a trend? A reflection on the senior speeches thus far and what is good and what is bad. Take a pulse from the general MA community about what they like to hear.
Eric Slamovich v2
1)
Article Idea: MA Athletic Records
Must Interviews: Josh Frechette, and all other Athletic coaches and members.
Why will people want to read this: Simply because no one knows of any of the athletic records. Who scored the most points ever in an MA basketball game? I don't know and our community needs to know. A chart would be splendid for this type of article.
2)
Article Idea: Iphones at MA
Must interviews: MA faculty and students
Why will people want to read this: It seems that everyone at MA has an Iphone. What has their experiences been carrying the silky smooth Iphone? Has it helped in any way in academics or has it distracted our community from succeeding?
1.
Article Idea: Summer Job Tips
Must Interviews: Business owners, students previously employed
Why people will want to read this: March is a good month to start looking and thinking about summer jobs. High school is the perfect age to start looking for summer employment, but many students do not know where to look for paying summer jobs. In this article, we could give a little overview on summer jobs and then list varied places that are looking to hire high school age students. We could include a short description of the place and what they are looking for in students. The jobs could vary between summer camp counselors, grocery store workers, and retail shop sellers.
2.
Article Idea: Op/Ed Piece on Girls Soccer
Must interviews: Alysse Godino, Josh Kalkstein, girl players, boy players, and other girl coaches
Why people will want to read this: At least in the freshmen class, there has been a lot of debate on whether girls' soccer is just as intense as boys' soccer. While obviously boys are bigger and faster at this age, there has been a lot of gender discrimination around this sport. Writing an opinion piece about the girls' sport and how committed girls (including me) really are would give a voice to the girls. I think guys would also like to read it to see what our argument is.
3.
Article idea: Spring Fever
Must interviews: Students and teachers, maybe parents?
Why people will want to read this: Beginning in March, there is always an undeniable buzz about spring. This could be a rather short piece, but it could delve into why people tend to feel this way and what people do to cope with it. People will be interested in it because they will be experiencing the same thing. While it is similar to the Senoritis article, it will be applicable to all grades and ages. If we wanted to include parents, we could ask them how they see their children change during the spring.
4.
Article idea: Profile on Visual Arts Department
Must interviews: Jenny, Roberta, Katharine, Anne, and art students
Why people will want to read this: There have been theater reviews, but not a whole lot of light has been shed on the Visual Arts department. Because so many students are involved with drawing, painting, photography, and ceramics, it would be interesting to hear the teachers' takes on art and why it is so important. It could give details about each art department, and why people in it like what they do. The spread could even be divided into three sections or squares, and within each details about each different art style.
5.
Article idea: Youth Activism
Must interviews: Lauren Toker, students
Why people will want to read this: Going hand in hand with the freshman Minicourse, a feature on youth activism would be a good addition to our paper. I think it's important for people to get involved at our age, and it's sincerely inspiring to hear about kids our age doing substantial things. We can interview people from MA and even huge activism leaders at other Bay Area schools. We can also put on links and places where we can get involved.
Alec
I mentioned assasin in one of my ideas so I have to trash it and get a new idea. So Obama has a 3.8 trillion dollar budget plan which should help increase the deficit and then he will have a big spending freeze in 2011. How closely are students and faculty following Obama's plan to help reboost the economy? What do they think of his plans? Are they working? People to interview are politically interested students and faculty who would be following Obama's plans. People will want to read this because alot of people in some way are affected by the economy and most people should want to know when and how it will improve.
1)
Article Idea: The cake art parking lot thefts
Must Interviews: Lynn Hansen, and MA students that currently park in cake art
Why People will want to read this: There has been a lot of people taking eachother's parking lot spots in Cake Art. Many people have received numerous tardies because of this. This incident and mystery the MA Voice needs to address to our community.
So my article ideas sucked before.. but I'm going to do a couple more.
1) Spring sports will be in full swing, so I think we should look into that and talk to captains of different spring sports to see what goals and challenges are, as well as what has been going well for them so far.
2) Senior Prank: Most years at Ma there is a senior prank. However this year no one knows what the senior prank is going to be. I've heard thats senior pranks at other schools have been bad in the past. We should talk with some seniors to see what some of their ideas are.
3) Some school departments at MA have been reputable by some student. Some subject departments have been known for their outstanding teachers and interesting courses. However other subject departments are lacking. This could possibly be controversial but it might be good to look at, and what kids think.
4) Can gay students take their significant other to school sponsored events. People at MA claim to be open to gays and we have a head of school who is a lesbian, but would students really be open to a gay male or female taking their significant other to a school event like prom or homecoming
1. Article Idea: Lit Fest Recap
Must interviews: Speakers, Taylor Kinney/Echoes Staff, Jim Baldwin
Why people will want to read this: From what I understand, Lit Fest is not like Conference on Democracy in that most students don't get to go to every one, so it'd be good to write about each speaker and maybe give some insight into the history of Lit Fest, why we do it, etc.
2. Article Idea: Senior Arts
Must interviews: Students performing at arts assemblies.
Why people will want to read this: Why senior arts? Why do people choose to show their talents through performance rather than public speaking? Why do we give them this option?
3. Article Idea: Newspapers in crisis
Must Interviews: other journalism students, non-journalism students, maybe a Marin IJ or SF Guardian staffer if we could get ahold of them.
Why people will want to read this: This would be a great way to report on the current state of newspapers and print media in general while tying it into our own slacking readership. We could actually get a lot of good ideas for upping readership this way.
4. Article Idea: Avatar, 3D, and how movies are changing.
Must interviews: Amanda, Dex, and i know there are some other seniors who are into film, i just can't remember who.
Why people will want to read this: Avatar will be old news by March, but Clash of the Titans will be coming out, and it's another 3d blockbuster. Avatar is now the most successful movie ever and most people feel it deserves it, but what does it say about the state of film today when, let's face it, what amounts to an overblown pocahontas rip-off with painfully weak dialogue makes billions of dollars and garners Oscar buzz? Does style now officially matter over substance? Pretty lights and cat people over strong characters and a compelling story?
5. Is indie dead?
Must interviews: students, that creepy guy at the record store on fourth
It's a word I've heard a ton since I came to MA, but what does it mean to be "indie"? Does it signify independence from corporate control, or does it now just mean a brand used to sell miracle whip to gullible hipsters? Are Juno-esque quirky people who don't fit in now just another stereotype? I think this would strike a nerve with quite a few people at MA.
1. OP-Ed: Evolution of the American Teenager: We can look at how Teenagers have changed from the 50's to the present (make sure to include lady Gaga and her sick mind control o teenagers.)
2. 4/20: School has another vibe during the infamous April 20th. We can explore how the mood and feel of the school changes. in terms of adding spice to the paper, this is as close as it can get. iM REALLY DOWN WITH THIS IDEA. Interviews: anynomous lynn, teachers.
3. OP-ED Why are people obsessed with vampires? From true blood to Twilight, people love vampires but why? This is an OpEd.
4. Op-Ed Lady Gaga: Seriously I think we should do an article about Lady Gaga and the way in which she is causing a transformation in teenagers and American culture in general.
5. OP-Ed The school and how it's obsession with being political correct actually makes me more uncomfortable than anything. When im in class and someone is saying something about Islam and side glancing at me, it makes me super uncomfortable.
Article Idea: The "other" musicians at MA
Must interviews: Joey Upjohn, Jesse Moore, Luis and Jonathan Sanchez
Why will people want to read this: There seem to be a bunch of students who have made their own music independent of the music class and I thought it would be interesting to talk to them about their experiences. Many of them have posted their work on facebook, but so far there hasn't been a forum for them on campus.
Article Idea: Who is really our rival?
Must interviews: Anyone, esp. varsity athletes and teachers who have been here a long time
Why will people want to read this: Branson seems like MA's natural rival due to their proximity and similarity to MA, but often University games draw bigger and more enthusiastic crowds. We could investigate students' perceptions about who our rival is and talk to teachers about whether/how the dynamic has changed over the years.
Article Idea: Op-ed with other schools
Must interviews: ?
Why will people want to read this: This is just an idea I had that needs a little more fleshing out, but it could be really interesting to take some major topic (going green, activism, revisit heath care or coordinate with the center spread of an issue) and contact another high school in an area (texas) that stereotypically has different views on the topic and coordinate writing opinion pieces on the effect of the issue at each school and then running them together. I would be happy to help figure this one out if anyone is interested.
Article Idea: The perception of MA
Must interviews: Branson, University students, applicants, San Rafael citizens
Why will people want to read this: This could work as either a straightforward or more light hearted piece about how the local community sees MA. This could also address how MA students want to shape the school's identity and their opinions on why it is known the way it is.
Article Idea: Why people don't get their licenses right away
Must interviews: students, esp. sophomores and juniors
Why will people want to read this: It seems to me that the majority of students aren't in any rush to get their driver's licenses. Why not? Does it have to do with the rule that sophomores can't drive to school? We can talk to students about their experience with getting or not getting their licenses and why they have/have not
Ilana Salant:
Article Idea: Controversy over Apple’s new product, the iPad
Must interviews: students, teachers, Greg Lentz, Brad Lakritz, etc.
Why will people want to read this: It adds a little bit more controversy that our paper lacks, yet doesn't target someone/something in the student body so most people will not be offended by it. In addition, the majority of the student body owns apple merchandise so this article might be directly relevant to them.
Article Idea: Where students have decided to go for college (early admission)/ where they have been recruited
Must interviews: Seniors who have chosen colleges already
Why will people want to read this: It is interesting to know about where our peers have chosen to go to college and also highlights their strengths
Article Idea: Preview/Recap of Senior Arts Assembly (Depending when the paper is released as the assembly is in late March)
Must interviews: Seniors that are performing, audience, etc.
Why will people want to read this: The senior art assemblies are fun and people definitely look forward to them because they showcase such great talent. The article will interest people because it will be a light piece that is very relevant to the MA student body.
Article Idea: Overview on new dance class (African Rhythm). This article can also go hand in hand with the a recap of the dance concerts which are happening on March 18th&19th
Must interviews: Students that are taking the class African rhythm and dance class as well as the guest teacher(s)?. Also Stephanie Ballas, etc.
Why will people want to read this: It will be a good opportunity to showcase the dance program at MA. It will also be a good opportunity to fefature some of the newer faces on campus.
Article Idea: This is kind of an addition to Henry’s idea about “Avatar, 3D, and how movies are changing.” I think there is a 3D fad hitting the country. For example, part of the Grammys was in 3D, which is definitely a new thing.
Must interviews: Student body, teachers, seniors who are doing their senior prpject on moviemaking, etc.
Why will people want to read this: I think nowadays, in order to succeed, people are going over the top; Lady Gaga, for example. In the filmmaking department, 3D is undoubtedly part that aspect. 3D gives movies the edge (Why avatar was such a box office hit).
1.
Article idea: Community Service
Must interviews: Students, Parents, Bill Henley
Why people will want to read this:
I think it'd be interesting to see how many people actually do community service, how many people actually do, and how many people just do it for college apps.
2.
Article idea: Religion at MA
Must interviews: Anyone who is religious
Why people will want to read this:
Devout worshippers of any religion seem to be few in number these days. This article could take a look at the few people who regularly attend religious services. How hard is it for them to balance school work with their religious obligations? Do they ever feel unwelcome or "different"?
3.
Article idea: Facebook Follies
Who to interview: We could have people send in funny facebook screen shots
Why people will want to read this:
It could be a funny light-hearted piece. I've seen some other school papers do it, so we could steal some funny quotes/ideas from them.
Article Ideas:
01. Article: The Oscars
Must interviews: Students and teachers, especially movie enthusiasts
Why people will want to read this: The Oscars are the biggest film awards all year, and many people watch carefully to see what movies win big. The MA community is no exception, and I feel that many people will be watching on Oscar night to see if their favorite movies do well. If nothing else, almost everyone will be watching to see if Avatar wins Best Picture, as nearly everyone has seen the movie at least once.
02. Article: following up on Travis' twins
Must interviews: Travis, Liz?
Why people will want to read this: I think it would be great if in every edition for this semester, we keep updating the MA community on the twins. Starting with this issue's article, we can tell people how the twins are doing, what they look like, and possibly even get some photos. It's always nice to hear about babies. (Either as part of this article or as a tie-in, we could ask Travis how it's been to be a parent, and how it's the same as/different from what she might have expected.)
03. Article: LOST
Must interviews: Students and teachers who are LOST fans.
Why people will be interested in this article: Maybe this article would fit better in the late April/May issue, when LOST is almost over, but I want to put the idea in the air. So many people at this school are LOST fans, and with the series ending this year, it would be great to get people's opinions on the show. We could talk about how people think the show's going to end, if they like what the creators have done so far with this season (season 6), what they will watch when LOST is over, why they do/do not like LOST, etc.
1.Article Idea: Uncensored ( i am not sure if the paper comes out after..)
Interviews: sanjai, joani, students in peer resources and club leaders
Why: This is an event that is run by MA students and both peer resources and club leaders work hard to put it on. We can explain what uncensored is, what topics are being discussed during. We can outline the what workshops will be going on at lunch (calendar format).
2. Article Idea: Assasin
I agree with Neha, I think we should do an assassin recap.
Interviews: Eric Johanson and Lynn, winning team
Why: We can talk about the winning team and ask them their best tactics. Also we can see how assassin differed from last year. It seems as though the freshman got more into it this year. Also we can go through the day in the life on a top assassin team.
3. Article Idea: island school/city term/mountain school kids
I really like eric's idea
Interviews: Adri, Chloe, Isabel, Cora
Why: it would be really interesting for them to describe their experiences because I think a lot of MA students are curious about what it was like. We can get pictures from them that show their experiences. this would be a good topic to write about because it can draw a lot of interest from those who don't know very much about it.
4. Article idea: Advising
Interviews: advisors and advisees (one from each grade)
Why: doing a profile on one advising from each grade would be really interesting. i think everyone is curious about what goes on in advisings other than their own. we can ask about special traditions, topics of conversation, ect.
5.Article Idea: open forum
i like jacobs idea about investigating what happened to open forum
interviews: lynne
why: i think it was a really good part of ma and i and probably a lot of the school are curious what happened to it.
1) Article Idea: Center Spread on College Process
Must interviews: College counselors, Lynne Hansen, many students, Joe Harvey, Travis (a TON of sources to flush this out)
Why will people want to read this: We have done many small pieces over the years, but with the addition of "Sophomore Night" I think it is time to address what the college application process has come to in a more cohesive piece. MA seems to be flip-floppy on telling students to care about grades or not - this also should be addressed.
2) Article Idea: Thrift Store Review
Must interviews: students, any teachers who shop at thrift stores
Why will people want to read this: We all know the cool thing to do is shop at thrift stores, or to buy expensive clothes that look like they could have been bought at a thrift store. For A+E, I think it would be fun to do Thrift Store reviews: Goodwill vs Salvation Army, Telegraph vs Haight.
3) Article Idea: Do You Dim Sum?
Must interviews: anyone who eats Dim Sum
Why will people want to read this: Julia and I have the fodder for this; we have been sampling the Dim Sum in Chinatown for a while now. At some point before the year is up we would love to run a piece comparing the places we have found. (Reminiscent of the NY Times’ recent article on Tokyo One Noodle at a Time)
4) Article Idea: Places on MA campus with a hand holding a photo of the same place a long time ago (I have an example of this I can show if this doesn’t make sense)
Must interviews: probably none, a photo-feature (but if yes any teachers that have been here for a long time)
Why will people want to read this: It will be fun to look at how the campus has changed over the years.
5) Article Idea: WFR course
Must interviews: Randi Martin, Peter P., any students who are certified
Why will people want to read this: It is a trend that people are become Wilderness First Aid Responders; Why? Who has done it? What is the training like?
6) Article Idea: Preseason practices
Must interviews: coaches, sports players, Josh Frechette
Why will people want to read this: As a non-sports player, I wonder what the regulations are on how many you can have. I always get the impression that people are practicing all the time out of season.
To Piggy-back on a few:
I love Henry’s idea on indie – can we do a terms piece? Literally, we should do our own little dictionary definitions of indie, hipster, etc.
A lot of people have mentioned HW load and sleep, and I do think we should do a follow up on the surveys we have been taking.
Sarah Strand
-Teen Driving and the One Year Rule
IDEA: The California DMV has a rule that any driver under 18 cannot transport passengers under 20 or drive brive between 11pm and 5am. But it seems to me that many people ignore this rule.
INTERVIEW: Students with licenses both provisional and unrestricted, Lynne, Parents.
WHY: Many students have their licenses but whether they follow the rule varies a lot. I think students would be interested in what their fellow drivers are doing or not doing and how other parents feel about the rule.
-Where do MA Students go to see live MUSIC?
IDEA: There's a generalization that live music doesn't exist in Marin, especially for the under 18 crowd. So where do students go to see music? Is it only in the City? And if they do go, where do they go and where?
INTERVIEW: Students, and not just music kids of course.
WHY: I think a lot of students would be interested in seeing live music, they just don't know where and how. So therefore they should be interested in getting some tips from students who know where to go and what good local bands that may be unknown are out there.
