The Time it Takes to Win it All: From the Wall Street Journal, this piece is an interesting look at the time, start to finish, that goes into an NFL football season. The Journal has had amazing statistical coverage of the NFL these last few weeks, and this is the culmination of the work. Where's the MA story in this article? How can we be inspired by this idea and bring it to our community?
Gay Marriage: The Case from the left & The Conservative Case for Gay Marriage: Two complementary pieces that present the Prop 8 issues from a different perspective: the conservative one. Read these two pieces in order as the first is about the writer of the second. Often times we know exactly what someone should think based on his or her party lines, but these articles turn that idea on its head. What do you think of these pieces? Of the arguments made? Any surprises?

Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.
Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

Conservative Case for Gay Marriage:
I found this article interesting because it brings Democrats and Republicans together on one issue, showing that being for equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians is not just a Liberal, it is an American issue. Having equal rights was in our Constitution and marriage is a basic fundamental right so it transcends both parties that way. Also, I realized that most conservatives are libertarian in the way they want less government involvment. Preventing gays from getting married would definitely be government involvment. Also, I realized that alot of religious conservatives want stronger families. More marriages would be good for society, wouldn't it? The more I see the reasons conservatives should be for gay marriage, the more I believe that many conservatives dislike gay people because they are gay and try to use values and other issues to cover it up. They can express their opinion as much as they want but they should tell the truth about their opinion.
The Time it Takes to Win it All:
This article really delves into the perception of football as the "slacker" of pro sports based off the time spent on the field; but in reality there is so much work force behind the scenes it's amazing. It would be great if we could go into more depth when we cover a team or coach in our sports section by really investigating the team's schedule and little secrets that the greater community might not now. Like in the article, an example could be: what is the policy for the team when a player is injured or sick? I know in Basketball we always had to come to a game or practice even if we weren't going to play. Some cool statistics using practice hours and "off the field" hours as used for this NFL article could be a nice way to spice up sports articles as well.
The Time it Takes to Win it All:
Like Neha, I really had no clue how grueling the NFL workload is for players and coaches alike. I've always been curious as to why they schedule games one a week, but now I understand. I really enjoyed how the article gave a behind-the-scenes look into the responsibilities of the unsung people that really allow the NFL to work as a cohesive unit. As for the MA tie in, I really like Neha's idea of taking a look closer look a the team schedules for some sports around school. We could rank them by most time intensive vs. the less demanding sports. Another thing, we could send some staff writers to practice with/observe how a team works. Just a thought, but I think it could turn into something cool unique.
Gay Marriage Articles
There's really nothing in this article that I haven't heard before/don't agree with, but it's very cool to see someone turning the traditional conservative stereotype on its head. Reading the piece got me thinking; the only real argument against gay marriage would be religion based, wouldn't it? And I bet if you surveyed people who voted against Prop. 8, you'd find that the majority of them voted because of religious reasons, which would most likely counteract the whole "church and state" thing that people find pretty darn important. I'd like to read a piece against gay marriage just to counter these articles; arguing against Prop. 8 at MA seems to be preaching to the choir, big time.
