This is a place for the staff of the MA Voice to engage in on-line discussion about issues relating to and inspiring good writing, reading and journalism.
Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.
Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

Editor Goals — Edition 6
Please post 3 goals you have for your section. Reflect on the last edition, areas where you have the most to improve and areas where you're doing great work. These goals can be design related, deadline related, or anything else. BUT, make sure these are measurable, outcome goals.

1.) Create a cohesive layout for the new MA/old MA photo spread (Sarah's article)
2.)Try to have the initial layout/design work visually so that I don't have to re-design either of the pages
3.)Check everything with the AP stylebook
COLOR COLOR COLOR!
I want even more interesting, entertaining, and funny graphics that are colorful and draw people to the page.
I really want Patrick's article to get a lot of attention because I think it will inspire the rest of the community to submit their own articles. I will try to highlight Patrick's article one way or another.
Good titles, no typos!
AMANDA :)
1.) I want to complete my page more quickly so that there will be more time to copy edit and thus catch my mistakes.
2.) I want to arrange the articles and graphics so that I do not have to cut so much out of the articles or make the graphics too small this time. Last time I had to take out sentences, decrease the space between lines, and make the pictures smaller to get everything to fit.
3.) Since I only have one page for the sports section this cycle, I would like to add in some colorful, interesting "side features." I have done these before, and I think it makes the entire page look more attractive. Hopefully, I will have room to do this, even if it is just a "email the sports editor at mweiss@ma.org" box. (Even if no one emails, it still looks good).
1. get pages finished sooner so there's more time for copy editing
2. keep trying to switch up layout to make pages more visually appealing
3. captivating headlines!
1. Use more pictures per article
2. Have catchy headlines
3. Use AP style
1. Be bold with photos in the center spread (this worked out well last time). We have the potential for excellence with the College/Comic theme, but it needs to be executed well.
2. Make sure the picture of Bill and Jennifer (for the cover) is high quality and well clipped out.
3. Work on making the jumps on the cover more catchy.
4. COPY EDIT COPY EDIT COPY EDIT
5. PICA PARTY
1. Set an Example: this may or may not be our last edition as an editorial staff, so it is important for us to set an example for the rest of the staff moving forward. I really want to make an effort to ensure that this edition is very polished (grammatically and design-wise) and also creative and innovative.
2. Continue the Good Trends: last edition, Sarah and I read through the entire edition before it went to print and caught some small errors that, though they may seem insignificant, really help us put a better paper out there. I want to try and do that again this edition, or put into place a system that makes sure each page gets at least one fresh pair of eyes on it before it goes to print.
3. Kick the Bad Trends: I have always had a couple of bad habits when it comes to layout: I wait until the last second to do things and I often get distracted with helping others when I'm laying out. While the second "bad" habit may not necessarily be a bad thing, the first one definitely is and I want to kick it before I leave the paper.
Goals response:
(I don't know if you want these here but just in case)
1. I loved the color! It looked fantastic!! I think it caught the readers eye and was extremely effective.
2. Patrick's graphic was exactly what I envisioned it to be. It was funny yet classic. Definitely something we should repeat when possible.
3. I thought the titles were awesome! I like the double headline.
