Same rules as the last time. Publication date will be late-May. Please keep that in mind when coming up with ideas.
Please post 6-7 ideas for the second edition of the year. You must have at least one article idea for each section (News, Sports, A&E, Features, Op/Ed, Center Spread). Be sure to read the other ideas BEFORE you post your own. You can elaborate on another person's post (with a citation, of course). Include an article idea for each section. Be specific and format each idea as such:
Article Idea:
Must interviews (be specific ... "students" is fairly obvious and somewhat lame):
Why will people want to read this:
This is a place for the staff of the MA Voice to engage in on-line discussion about issues relating to and inspiring good writing, reading and journalism.
Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.
Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

News- where seniors are going to collage
i'm not sure if this would be news or features, but it would be interesting for people to see where the class of 11 plans on spending the next few years, seeing that it's the end of the year. interviews would be seniors and collage counselors
Sports- NCS/BCLs
what teams are going, when, MA's chances at winning and which games people plan on attending. athletes and coaches, and students to gage interest in different things.
A+E- favorite TV shows at MA
i don't know if this has been done before, but i think it would be really interesting to see what tv shows people seem to like the most. Not only students, but faculty and staff as well would be included.
Features- MA Senate (how well do you know your senators?) getting to know the people on senate. i think this is interesting mostly because i don't most of them and what they do. sort of an inside look as to how that whole thing works. interviews would be members of senate/students to see how well they know who is on senate, depending on exactly what direction it goes in.
Op/Ed- the use of open forum
the last one really didn't seem to have that much interesting things going on. what can we do to make it better?
Center Spread- teachers coming and going from MA
why do teachers choose MA, and why do they leave?
News
Calender of upcoming events
I know we did this in the November issue, but as the year is coming to an end, it might be fun to have another calender of some of the most important happenings in the next month or so. This could include school activities and events and outside of school events, such as concerts, movies coming out, etc. It would be a fun, graphic heavy piece that would give students and faculty a look into the next month.
Sports
Giants season: a summary of their season thus far, what is expected of them this year, differences between their team this time last year and now
Must interviews: Giants fans -- teachers, students of all grades
Why: I know last season a lot more people became fans of the Giants because they were winning, this article could use that momentum to keep these new fans and keep them updated on the season
A&E
Spring Fashion - a look into the new trends seen around campus as the weather gets warmer.
Must interviews: students from all grades (boys and girls) and it would be interesting to have teacher perspectives too - what their favorite article of clothing is, their favorite color to wear, etc. etc.
Why: It's a fun, graphic-heavy piece that will be interesting to read and look at. Also it may give people ideas of what to wear
Features
A look into some teachers' high school lives: photos of their high school yearbook pictures juxtaposed with pictures of them now. Underneath the photo there could be a little blurb with a quote about what kinds of things they were into in high school, what kind of high school they went to, where it was, etc.
Must interviews: faculty and staff
Why: I think it would be really interesting and fun to learn more about our teachers and faculty. At MA there is such a close relationship between teacher and student and it would be interesting to take that a step further and learn a little bit about their high school lives.
Op/Ed
Senior Projects
Must interviews: seniors who chose to do projects, seniors who's project proposals were denied, faculty and staff
Why: This article could show the kinds of things seniors will be doing this year but also discuss the pros and cons of senior projects and the reasons behind some not being picked. Should MA be less strict about picking them? More?
Center Spread
Cafeteria food. This could be a look into what goes into making the lunches and snacks at MA. Everything from shipping it to MA to serving it on the trays.
Must interviews: kitchen staff
Why: A lot of people complain about the food at MA but if they knew all the effort that goes into getting the food, choosing the meals, and then preparing them, people may think twice.
Op/ed: The Leek
Must Interviews: Johnny, Dave Marshall, Ryan F., etc.
The distribution of The Leek causes a frenzy around campus, and, as our only “rival” publication, I think it would be kind of cool to address it in some way.
Sports: Race between varsity soccer/XC
Must Interviews: Mason, Eric, Lucy, James, Alex, Liz, EG
There is a competition between the varsity soccer and cross country teams that is rumored to be happening, which I think could prove to be an entertaining read.
News: Dance class drama- Stephanie Ballas departs, new teach comes in
Must Interviews: Dance Company, Dance 1/2 , Nicole (interim teacher)
Dance instructor Stephanie Ballas recently left MA in a hurry, thus resulting in chaos within the two dance classes. There is an “interim” instructor for the remainder of this year, but I believe they are looking for a more permanent replacement.
Center spread: Finals vs. culminating projects
Must Interviews: Joe, Travis, sophomore and juniors (freshman haven’t really experienced both, and I’m not sure what the deal is with seniors)
This, especially in the midst of the culminating projects, seems to be a heated topic that people are definitely willing to discuss. I think it would also be good for the community to get a sense of general reactions.
News/Features
Another class of 2015 type thing
Must Interviews: Admissions office (Dan, Sue, etc.)
The issue last year about the incoming class was pretty successful, so maybe we could do something similar again.
Graduation Speaker
Must Interviews: Lynne, Joe, Travis, seniors (reaction to speaker)
MA is able to get some pretty impressive speakers, and highlighting the graduation speaker seems timely.
A+ E: Spring Theater production
Must Interviews: Upperclass theater kids, Annie, David
The production (I’m not sure if it has been chosen yet) is being performed in late May, so this edition would be a good time to review/discuss it.
A&E: Spring Fashion Trends
Interviews: Students- upper classmen and underclassmen, some of the best dressed! Teachers (thoughts on appropriateness and or other opinions)
Why: This can be an article about how people are shedding layers and what is cool to wear this spring! best deals at stores, etc
Features: PROMA
Interviews: Upper classmen, chaperones!
Why: this can be a piece on the recent Uncensored meeting title "Proma" which was about the socioeconomic injustice/pressure that prom may create. This can be about the recent prom and peoples' thoughts/reflections.
Sports: Athletic Banquet
Interviews: long time athletes of all grades, Josh, coaches of different sports
Why: This can be a reflection on the Athletic Banquet and who was honored/ how sports adds to a high school education/experience.
Center Spread: Senior Project
Interiews: Seniors (one SP and not) SP leaders, some focused leaders (not just teachers)
Why: This can be a slew of articles about the value of senior project, what seniors are doing this year, common focuses, how we are learning though experience or giving back to the community, etc.
Op/Ed: Senior Project, fair?
Interviews: Same as above including SP advisory board (Lynne, Joe)
Why: This can be an opinion piece on whether or not it's fair or worth of to allow some (not all) seniors out of school three weeks early. Opinions on the application process? Good use of Seniors' time?
News: Culminating Experiences
Interviews: Student from each grade, multiple seniors, Lynne, teachers, advisors, parents?
Why: This can be a piece on the new system of culminating experiences for each class and the varied perspectives on how this is helpful and/or hurtful for an MA education.
BY CHARLOTTE
News
Article Idea: Candidates running for office
Must interviews: People running, Travis, Zia, and students not running–they can talk about the kind of people they look for in each position.
Why read? Because elections are a big deal at MA, and students are always curious as to who is running, and who will win.
Sports
Article Idea: MVPS this Year
Must interviews: All students who won MVP, teammates of MVPs, etc. We could also take the approach on if the MVP award has encouraged students to play their sport in college.
Why people will want to read: MVP winners are very respected at MA and people are always curious to see who wins the prestigious prize for each sport.
Features
Idea: Prom
Must interviews: Students attending, chaperones, planners of prom. Anyone involved with the prom process at MA.
Why people will want to read: Juniors and seniors are always really excited when prom rolls around, so this would give them the opportunity to voice their opinions, but also read about the event they're so excited for.
Op/Ed:
Idea: Too many clubs at MA/Are clubs created for the wrong reasons?
Must interviews: Students who have recently created clubs, and students who are against the creation of clubs because they feel their creation is for the wrong reasons.
Why read? There is a lot of controversy surrounding clubs, especially at such a competitive school. A lot of people think that clubs are created just for the students to have a better shot at getting into a good college.
Center Spread: SAT's
Idea: We could discuss how depending on your financial situation you are impacted by the SATs (tutors, classes, etc.) and also about drugs some people take during exams.
Must interviews: Students who have been privileged by SAT prep, others who haven't. Teacher's viewpoints and how the test differs from when they were highschoolers.
Why read? SAT's are a big part of applying to college, and they are relevant to all students at MA, because we all have to take them in order to get into college.
Center Spread: Facebook
Idea: I know we've talked about doing this as the center spread before, and I think it would be a great time to make our center spread about Facebook. It's benefits, drawbacks, etc. Also how it has impacted MA life and the photo-taking phenomena that has sprouted from Facebook.
Interviews: Those who have Facebooks, those who don't. Teachers who are addicted to the site, students who are addicted.
Why read? Many students and teachers have Facebooks, if not most, so this is relevant to most people at MA.
News
Article Idea: Upcoming summer concerts in the Bay Area
A whole host of great artists are coming to the Bay Area this spring/summer (Ke$ha, Dispatch, Kid Cudi, etc). These concerts generate a lot of buzz, and students are more likely to go to them during the summer. There could even be a preview of Outside Lands, because I've heard students already talking about the bands playing there.
Interviews: Students/teachers who have attended concerts in the past, who plan to attend
Why: We can not only provide the most-talked about summer concerts so more students can attend, but also analyze (through student/teacher opinions) which will be the best. They're a great way to start off the summer, and generally students at MA are interested in seeing live music.
Sports
Article Idea: How athletes beat the weather
Being a soccer player, I know that playing sports in summer weather can be the hardest thing...ever. It's the worst, and inevitable in many sports. I've seen girls put ice cubes in their shinguards before playing a game, tape icepacks to their chests, and even bring portable water tanks to tournaments with a hose for misting. What are some other sports in which athletes attempt to "beat the heat," and how do they do it?
Interviews: Athletes, especially those who play sports during the summer (or go to camps) or who are on club teams.
Why: I think any athlete would like to know some more tips and tricks pertaining to comfort in unbearable weather. Plus, I'm sure we could dig up some funny things people have done in the past.
A&E
Article Idea: Summer movies
We all know that some of the best movies come out in summer, and 2011 will be no different. The new Transformers is coming out, not to mention the last installment of the Harry Potter series. Also an interesting point to discuss could be midnight premieres, because a lot of people tend to go to these during the summer.
Interviews: Harry Potter fans (Julia Irwin has read all the books "upwards of 15" times), other big movie-goers
Why: Getting hyped up for talked-about summer movies proves to be pretty exciting. It'd be a solid piece for the A&E section, especially with summer fast approaching.
Features
Article Idea: When I was in High School...
I think doing an article (or just a bunch of quotes) of what faculty and alum wish they had known when they were in high school based off that MTV show "When I was 17" would be hilarious. We could be funny anecdotes, advice, or maybe (if we could get them) photos.
Must Interviews: Interesting faculty members and alum (definitely Travis and Lynne!)
Why: What MA community member wouldn't want to read this? Even though finding the right people and great interviews would be time consuming, I think that done right this would be an amazingly funny piece.
Op/Ed
Article Idea: Does weather really change one's mood?
I've heard a lot that during the winter, people tend to feel down or sad and during spring and summer they are happy and energetic. How legitimate is this argument? Either a writer on the staff or a guest writer could examine how the weather changes one's mood, deriving from personal experiences or studies done by others.
Must Interviews: This would be up to the person writing the opinion piece, especially if they felt strongly one way or another.
Why: I would like to know the answer to this question... or just read something funny that a great writer has to say about it.
Center Spread
Article Idea: College-Bound
Last year's split article college edition was a hit. I think that doing the same thing this year is somewhat expected, though I think the graphic can definitely change and maybe this can have more interviews with students.
Must Interviews: College counselors, with the information about who decided where to go to college and some interviews with seniors.
Why: It seems like tradition. I think people look forward to knowing where their older friends or peers are planning on going.
A&E: Movies everyone should see
Really, I cannot tell you how many times this has happened in conversation:
random student: "yeah...it was just like [actor] in [movie]"
me: "you know, I never saw [movie]"
r.s: "whaaaaat? are you kidding me? it's a classic! it's like the best movie ever made! everyone has seen [movie]"
So, what are the movies that everyone should see?
Interview: cinema-loving students, the teachers that did the movie-watching minicourse (i can't remember who they were)
Why: I'd like to know, so I don't get ridiculed anymore. I think it'll be fun to read, and a good guide to movies.
News: Joe Harvey leaving (has this been done before? i didn't find it on issuu) Joe Harvey is leaving MA to be headmaster of St. Marks. Theres the news.
Interviews: Joe Harvey, Travis, st. marks alums (me! me!)
Why: because we're losing joe harvey, and that's news.
Features: (i think this is features) How to run for senate
This could be funny. What does it take to run for senate? Is it a well made campaign video? Baked goods? Cardboard cutouts? Ambition, intelligence and determination (noooo)?
Interviews: senate, potential candidates
why: because it's funny, and the student gov't campaigns are beginning
Sports: I second Matthews idea. It's really the best way to go. All the teams, where they stand now, where the games will be.
Interviews: Josh, coaches, student athletes
why: because it's the biggest MA sporting event
Op/Ed: credit to Jackett, again. Open forum is an amazing idea. Maybe class meetings too. Personally, I think both are a waste of time.
Interviews: Lynne, Zia, deans, students that used open forum
Why: because we all have to sit through them. is it worth it? maybe I should bring it up in open forum. heh.
Centerspread: stereotypes. high school stereotypes (and ma stereotypes) what are they, who best represents them, are the accurate?
Interviews: sanjai/charis, leaders of various clubs, kids from all different 'friend groups'
why: it could be funny, or just informative. but the graphics are sure to be fun, and it'd be fun/easy to read.
Sports:
The transition from high school/club sports to college sports. Recruiting students for college teams can be extremely selective, so what does it take to either be selected or do a “walk on” (or at least that’s what it’s called in swimming). People to interview would be seniors/juniors who are being recruited or approached by colleges and what it took for them to get good enough to be approached. Also, what does it take to do a walk on or at what level do colleges expect high schoolers to be at?
A&E:
Remakes of movies and/or Renditions of books to movies. What are the English teachers/movie club member’s thoughts on the remakes of some original movies, or the renditions of the books we read in school. The comparisons, and the portrayal of characters, themes, settings, and actor’s choices. The time period would also matter as well, to show the society’s thoughts on the book.
-Planet of the Apes
-Jane Eyre
-Tron Legacy
--Frankenstein
--All Quiet on the Western Front
--The Tempest
News/Features:
What it’s like to go to school with your twin. It might be more difficult to have to compare yourself with your “better half” and teachers, grades, and classes. We could interview the pairs of twins at MA, and show the difference of having seniors being accepted into colleges, SATs, or SSATs (for getting into high school).
Senior’s Independent studies at MA. Some interesting cases, and maybe interesting interviews would be seniors who’ve graduated and how their projects changed their experience at MA, college, and their entire life in general and their interest with that subject.
Op/Ed:
Made in China/Outsourcing: What are the feelings on products made in China and other countries that are outsourced for their cheap labor and materials. Is this good for supporting struggling third world countries or taking good, pure American jobs? How much stuff do we buy from large manufacturers like Nike who also had child labor in their midsts. We could interview the Mandarin teacher on her experiences when she was growing up, and maybe the people responsible for ordering merchandise for the school. How can we help this issue at MA, and how severe is it?
Center Spread:
Teachers that have written books and/or done fieldwork, or been a historian sometime before becoming or during teaching. How did they do it, and why? What interested them in this particular specialty? I understand Sarah Hodeling wrote ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ and Nicole Jensen did many years of fieldwork studying different species of bees. I think this would be a cool piece for anyone who loves a particular subject and a good gateway into finding someone with connections.
News: Candidates for MA office (Charlotte's idea)
Interviews: Candidates, Zia, Christie, Hunter, Carson, other students for their say
Why: Give a snapshot into the candidates running for office. I'm not sure if this is going to be too late though...
Sports: Key seniors who are leaving varsity teams
Interviews: senior athletes, coaches, underclassmen athletes
Why: This article would cover which sports teams are losing key players and who to look for next season
A+E: Summer blockbusters
Interviews: No idea, kind of stuck here (other than quotes from students about which movies they are looking most forward to)
Why: This would be a list of the upcoming summer movies. We could include if any of them have been rated by the site Rottentomatoes.
Features: Senior projects
Interviews: Lynne, kids on senior project
Why: A snapshot into the many exciting senior projects that are happening in the month of May. This would be a great way for the entire MA community to support the projects and for underclassmen to get ideas for their senior year.
Op/Ed: Sparknotes and Cliff notes
Why: Is it ever ok to use these sources? They're both widely available and students at MA do use them.
Center Spread: Teen Suicide/depression
Interviews: Parents of the student at Drew who committed suicide, Joani
Why: This might be old news but it was something that wasn't talked about enough at MA. I'm not sure if the voice has done a comprehensive article on all the suicides that have plagued our community over the last couple of years.
-A&E: Morning music preferences. While many A&E articles discuss television or movies or concerts, the radio is not often talked about. How do you make use of the time spent driving to school? With the year winding down, an article that highlights students’ morning music routines (similar to an article from earlier this year) could help students spice up their last carpool experiences before the summer. Do students listen to a playlist on their ipod or CD? A morning radio show? Anything at all? Why? Interviews for this article could be upperclassmen who drive to school or drive a carpool, carpool members, teachers who drive/carpool, etc.
-Center Spread: The Year in Review. This article would highlight the best (and worst?) moments from this past school year. (Things like Minicourse, winter formal, outings, spirit week, specific classes, social gatherings, sports games, theater/music/dance performances, etc.) It would be interesting to look back on these fun moments to both cherish the rest of the year before it ends as well as to anticipate what is to come next year. The “college map” could also talk about what people are looking forward to (as well as back).
-Features: MA’s summer plans: what will the MA community be up to this summer? This article would dive into the cool things that students and teachers have planned this summer—I know I have been told many times as a junior that it is important for me to have a “meaningful summer,” so it could be cool to learn how people are making meaning out of their own summer breaks.
Op/Ed: Comparing MA’s election season to the U.S. election process. Though the senate elections will be almost over (if not completely over) by the time the next issue of the Voice comes out, I think an article that talks about their importance on the MA campus would be an interesting read. If senate is supposedly a group that does very little on campus (a label that I find flawed) then what makes the senate elections so exciting for the student body? Comparing MA elections to those of the country (and maybe the role of the media in the two) could be a fun and even humorous read that would offer the community a new perspective on the emphasis we place on our own elections here.
-Op/Ed: With all the worldwide problems we constantly hear about on the news, it is easy for me to forget about the problems that affect my own community. This article would give the community a different perspective on all of the world’s history in the making: is some news more important than other? With so much access to information, and therefore so many breaking stories and newsworthy topics, will we have to start prioritizing what’s on the news in order to keep up with the times? Interviews: anyone (students and teachers) who are passionate about worldwide and/or local issues and who keep up with current events steadily.
-Sports: Athletes’ Pre-game routines. I think the Voice might have done this a while ago, but with the playoff season only weeks away, it could be interesting to ask different athletes what they do to prepare for an important game or match—do they eat a particular food? Do they listen to a particular genre of music? Do they stretch? Do they get nervous? Etc… Interviews: student-athletes, most likely upperclassmen who have experience playing (and therefore preparing for) playoff games, but freshmen and sophomore perspectives are relevant too!
-News: Taking a look at the MA’s new classes for next year and the hype that they have received. At least three new classes were added to the Course Catalog this year—astrophysics, American government and politics, and “That’s absurd!”—and they all seem like great additions to the already exciting selection of classes that MA offers. Talking about them is a relevant topic to the entire MA community. Interviews: the teachers who created these classes, current sophomores and juniors who may have signed up for these classes, Lynne, Joe Harvey.
News: Judgment Day – May 21, 2011
Must Interviews: Leaders of MA’s Christian Club, local believers and non-believers (local being Bay Area, San Rafael, MA)
Why: I think that the highly controversial nature of this topic will make the article a must-read! Many people talk about how little Christianity goes on at MA and I think that this would be a great opportunity to get more conversation going while obviously keeping the article as unbiased and non-judgmental [no pun intended ;)] as possible.
Sports: Rowing! How Marin Rowing did at Regionals in early May and looking forward to Nationals in June
Must Interviews: Marin rowers on campus (Novice: Ryan Kroner, Monica Gerber, Maddie Ginsburg; Varsity (though on Voice Staff): Greig, Vanessa), Joe Harvey (previously a rower)
Why: The Marin Rowing teams are extremely successful but often times looked over seeing as they are not school teams. This would be a great way to raise awareness and hopefully some excitement and support from the MA community about rowing and the awesome achievements of some MA students.
A&E: Concerts, Movies, Summer/Spring Trends
Must Interviews: Dave Marshall (concerts), Bob Schleeter? (concerts), concert-loving students, Bill Meyer (movies), J O’Malley (movies)
Why: This is a popular topic and therefore has been mentioned now a few times but I think it would be both fun and useful to do a calendar or even just an article or two about upcoming concerts, movies, local activities and/or trends as spring turns into summer and the sun starts to shine a bit more. Students and teachers alike could really benefit and enjoy this update and it has the potential for fun graphics, design.
Features: Seniors’ College Decisions
Must Interviews: the Jennifers, seniors (reflecting on time at MA and looking forward to college), siblings of seniors
Why: I know this is a popular topic but I’m pretty sure it’s a classic (the map of the U.S. and a list of where each senior will be going). If we were to do an article as well I think it would be really nice to get some reflective quotes from seniors and even from some siblings of seniors at MA.
Op/Ed: Hyper-Political-Correctness at MA
Must Interviews: Sanjai Moses, Travis, Lynne, opinionated students
Why: Often times we try to be really “PC” at MA but sometimes it goes too far and in effort to be “PC” sometimes people make situations unnecessarily awkward and uncomfortable. I think that there is a lot to be said about how people in the MA community define the atmosphere that MA provides for the people in and around it and how efforts to be PC can affect or even shape that atmosphere.
News
Article Idea: Smitten Ice Cream
Smitten Ice Cream is an ice cream store that just opened up in hayes valley. the owner is an alum from Branson, Robyn Sue. Sue created a machine named Kelvin that runs on liquid nitrogen and can make ice cream from scratch in only 1 minute. I've tried it myself and its delicious! This would be a fun article because its promoting a local business and I bet there aren't a lot of people who have heard about this machine! (http://smittenicecream.com/home/Home.html)
interview: people who have tried the ice cream, Robyn and people who work for her
Op/Ed
Article Idea: Frozen Yogurt Epidemic
There are so many frozen yogurt places all around the Bay Area, and more keep coming! Fro Yo is becoming the new "thing" here, and it would be interesting to hear peoples opinion on it. Whether they prefer frozen yogurt over ice cream, or if they have a favorite place to get their fix of fro yo.
interviews: frozen yogurt fanatics, someone who owns a frozen yogurt store, students/teachers who aren't into frozen yogurt
Sports
Article Idea: GIANTS! (creds to claire)
I completely agree with Claire! As the winners of the 2010 world series, I am sure more and more people have become interested in the giants. this piece should be about the new players, the players who left, and students/teachers thoughts about this season.
interview: students/teachers who are fans of the giants
Features
Idea: Best and Worst of the Year
This article would be about students and teachers bests and worsts of the 2010-2011 school year. Since the school year is coming to a close, it would be nice to reflect on what went well and what people want to be better for next year. Whether it is personal or about MA, this would be a fun piece to read!
interviews: students and teachers who have good or bad experiences to share
Center Spread
Idea: Pressure
This center spread would be about all the pressures that high school students face on a day to day basis. This ranges from parental pressure, peer pressure, and academic pressure. This is really important because it affects all students, not just at MA, and we don't talk about all the pressure a lot.
interviews: students who can relate, Joanie, Sanjai, Charis, and teachers who have an opinion.
A&E
Idea: Too Much TV...
This article would be about how, now that we can watch TV and movies easily on our laptops, how much more TV we watch and how much it affects our school work. I know that, since netflix allows you to stream tv shows, I have been watching a lot more then I should. This would be a good article because, although some students may not want to admit it, we all know that these addicting shows can get the best of us sometimes.
interviews: students who watch a lot of TV, teachers who think tv affects students academics.
A&E-Looking at Hulu and Netflix
Hulu and Netflix now allow you to watch instantly from your computer, while video stores like Blockbuster are going out of business. We don't have to interview anyone specific, just a varied group.
Sports-The MLB season so far
As the MLB season progresses, many people can already see contenders for the World Series. We could interview basic sports fans, as well as kids on the Baseball team.
Op/Ed-Use of open forum (Matthew's idea)
Open forum's a great idea, but how much actually gets changed because of it? I don't know who sets up open forum or if it's organized at all, but there are definitely people with opinions about it.
Center Spread-Graduating From MA
What colleges do MA kids get into, and where do they go? How do they stack up against other bay area schools? Interviews from counselors and graduating seniors are our best bets.
Features-Who's leaving MA
It always seems like a big deal. May be we can explore the reasons why teachers leave and come to MA. Interview with leaving teachers/admins, and maybe w/ their replacements
News-Looking to next year
As in every year, we have a slew of new classes and things to get used to next year, including the class of 2015. We could talk to administrators about the new plans for next year.
News - similar to Matthews idea...but i think it would be fun to have a piece about where seniors are going to college, with a map or some charts showing the most popular colleges for the class of 2011. Interviews: seniors, college counselors
Sports - Progress of the Lacrosse team
Four years ago, the lacrosse team was pretty mediocre, and the majority of the people on the team had never played competitively. This year, the team has beaten a lot of bigger schools with good lacrosse teams (like Tam, Acalanes, Cardinal Newman, etc.) It would be cool to look at how the lax program has developed to well in such a short time. Interviews: Josh, seniors who've been on the team all 4 years, freshman who came to MA with the intention of joining the team. maybe even Dan Babior to see if there's been in a noticeable increase in applicants with lacrosse experience.
Features - Changes in the MA course catalog
A look at how the course offerings at MA have changed recently as a result of teachers leaving/new ones coming in. Some really popular courses (Golden Gate, Physics, etc.) are in jeopardy of being discontinued because teachers are leaving MA. At the same time, there's some hype about new classes that may be offered next year.
This is similar to some other people's ideas, because it would highlight the teachers who are leaving MA.
Interviews: Joe H., Ken Lanik, Lynne, students who've taken Golden Gate/Physics
Center Spread - This is an extended version of the idea about the changes in the course catalog. We could extend it to look at the intended direction of the MA curriculum for the next decade or so. This would include discussion about teachers leaving, new classes being offered, whether or not the Master Plan will impact the MA curriculum, not just the campus aesthetics. Also, this could incorporate a lot of issues people are taking about - Senior Project, Culminating experiences, MA senate, etc.
Interviews: teachers leaving, Travis, Lynne, Class Deans/Department chairs.
...i'll post ideas for A&E and Op/Ed later
Sorry I didn't have time to do this over the weekend at my tournament...

A conclusion to the college process, a map of where seniors are going to college (like Matthew's idea and Miles!!) I liked how there was a map on the one last year. It could include most applied to school's etc... Interviews- seniors, Jennifers, Megan.
Sports-
Conclusion of sports at MA, how the different teams did... any records that were set, remarkable feats. Interviews- captains, coaches, Josh (similar to Maddy's).
A&E-
Harry Potter... the last movie is coming out, people's thoughts on the fact that the movies are almost all done. There are some pretty big Harry Potter fans... Interviews- Megan Kallstrom! Harry Potter fans both teachers and students.
Features-
A look into the Third Floor of Foster. The people that work up there are really nice and do a lot for the school but they go unnoticed a lot by students. Interviews- the people who work up there
Center Spread-
MA Traditions and how they have evolved... It would be beneficial for the years to come, a good comparison. Interviews- Teachers who have been here a while... people who have started new ones
Op/Ed-
I like Ella's idea of Frozen Yogurt! Yummy! It could lead to a very good looking graphic too. It could be a very funny article.
The Prom Edition

Why people will want to read this:
Sports
Article Idea: Sports conflicting with prom
Interviews: Vanessa, Greig, other sports
Why people will want to read this: every year there are games on Prom and even some people who can't go to prom because of sporting events. We could elaboate on this issue and talk about the conflicts.
Op/Ed
Article Idea: Supperclub
Interviews: peeps from the supperclub, the whole community could have opinions, mapa, lynne
Why people will want to read this: This is the third year in a row that we've gone to the supperclub. Do people like it? What do people think? Where do people want to go next year?
A/E
Article Idea: Dance DJs
Interviews: Students in general, students on Senate, Lynne, chaperones.
Why people will want to read this: Who do we hire to DJ? Do students like them? what kind of music would students rather see at dances? I know that we don't hire the DJ for prom, but we could talk about him/her too.
Features
Article Idea: Proma!
Interviews: Seniors mainly, lynne, juniors, some sophomores who were asked.
Why people will want to read this: Who asked who? What were the most creative ways to ask? Who didn't want to go with that person? Everyone loves gossip....
Center Spread
Article Idea: PROM PROM PROM
Interviews: Mapa, administration (lynne, joe, travis), chaperones, parents, juniors and seniors
Why people will want to read this: The prom committee is a secret panel that meets in undisclosed locations to plan the big event. Or at least that's what it feels like. Who's involved? What do they do? How do they decide? And what do people think of the result?
News (Charlotte's idea)- Senate Elections
Something we've been talking about in senate is possibly taking statements from candidates for the voice to publish. We could take quotations from those statements (if they end up getting written) and compare them. If they don't end up being required, then candidate interviews would work just as well. A possible graphic could be a poll of like 50 students, asking them who their vote for president would go towards.
Sports (Isabelle's idea) - Collegiate Level Sports
At MA, which seniors are likely to continue playing their current sports in College? I think this angle is a bit more personal for most MA students. Interviews could include students who are outstanding at their sport who are moving on to college (i.e. Lucy McCullough).
A+E (Matthew's idea) - MA's favorite TV shows
Other points in the article could be comparing the popular networks and methods of watching these shows -- as they are aired or on Hulu/On Demand the next day?
Center Spread - Colleges
This has probably been done a thousand times, but I think it would be interesting to see where seniors are going to college. The main graphic could be a map with lines sprouting from San Rafael and ending at the colleges being attended by our seniors. We could also look at the most popular colleges and states (or countries...)
Center Spread - Summer Plans
A different idea with a similar graphic, seeing where students are going this summer and why would be both a timely and interesting topic. What's great about summer plans is that everybody has them, whether they're staying home or building an orphanage in Africa. Interviews could include any student or teacher, and graphics could include a map and a poll of popular summer trip locations.
Op/Ed (Claire's idea) - Senior Projects
It's basically all been covered, we should just write about different projects going on, who's running them, and why they're interesting.
Features: An article on the students running for senate for next year.
Must Interview: Lynn, students running, and students who are currently on senate
Why? I think this would be a good way to show the candidates before they give their speeches. It would also be good for candidates who cannot spend all of the money to print the propaganda for their own campaign.
News: An update on the middle east
Why: This has been a center piece of the news for the past few months, the one issue would be making sure the article is as up to date as possible when the piece is published. The Writer might just do an over view of what has happened so far.
Center Spread: Where people are going to college, and what the college process was like this year
Sports: The Polar Opposite Lacrosse Team that exists today from 4 years ago
Interview: Josh, Team Captains, Freshman on team, kids who have been on team all 4 years
Why: This has been one of the most radical changes in sports at MA. The team has gone from winning one game in their freshman year, to going undefeated last year, and on track this year.
Op/Ed: I agree with Matthew, I think an opinion piece on Open Forum is very very necessary.
Why: I believe that what happened at Open Forum was really not in the spirit of MA, and I would love to hear what the other kids thought.
A/E: A Review/Overview of the 3 visual arts at MA
Must interviews: Jenny, Anne, and Katherine
Why will people want to read this: Often the Freshman at MA choose what art they will pursue in soph. year and beyond blindly. This could be a way to have descriptions, by students in each art class talk about what the classes are like and what kind of student might enjoy taking that course. A quote or two from each one of the teachers of each art form would also help the teacher convey the ideas of the class.
A+E: Seniors with Art honors
Marin Arts Council awarded a selection of Marin Academy seniors with Marin Arts Scholarship Awards for excellence in the arts. The award ceremony takes place on April 28th.
People will want to read this because it would show seniors that excell in their arts.
Interviews: Sturdy Adams (music), Olivia Howard (draw/paint), Allie Mages (dance), Sivan Marcus (ceramics), A.J. Roy (theater), and Johnny Winston (photography)
Features: Senior Euro Trips
I think it would be cool to do a piece about where some seniors are traveling after they leave MA. We could include a map with different paths of different seniors.
People would want to read this because everyone thinks about what they're going to do with their last high school summer and it is fun to see where people will overlap etc
Interviews: Seniors going on Euro trips: Chloe Ouyang, Lauren phipps, Zia grossman etc
News: Suicide at Drew School
I'm not sure if this would be appropriate to include in the Voice but a member of our outside community took his life and I know that many students at MA were very close with him. I was talking to some about a piece in his honor.
Interviews:Michaela Papale, Ryan johnson etc
Why people will want to read this piece: Suicides in high schools is something that occurs ever year and I think it is something that is relevant to us as high school students.
Sports: Softball
MA's girls softball team is flying under radar, however, I think they are undefeated as well as an interesting team to talk about. Considering the announcement given at assembly last week they have underclassmen rebels who are going against their senior team captains.
Interviews: Sophia Dauria, Coach, Ellie, Kate and Lauren.
Op/Ed: Process of Prom
I think it would be funny to have an Op/Ed going through the process of prom. It could be step by step kind of like the how to build a fire with little graphics. (for example: Step one: find a date, with a little blurb about the difficulties and what goes into the selection. etc )
I think this piece would be comical while it would also grab the readers' attention.
Center Spread: Colleges (lena) and Teacher pairs.
I think it would be interesting to match up where seniors are going to college with a teacher who attended the same school. Perhaps with a little blurb about why they liked it when visiting it now and what was appealing back then.
Must interviews: teachers and seniors
(Sorry I was on a plane)
