Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.

Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

Week 4: Font geeks & Facebook & More

For the Love of Fonts: A great essay on a subject I hold near and dear: typography. Yes the subject might be a little geeky, but it is a solid read. What are your thoughts?

If I'm on Facebook, It Must Be Over: Another great opinion piece, but this one is from the NYTimes. An author discusses her recent joining of Facebook. Do you agree that Facebook is beginning its demise? What do you think of Sittenfeld's style of writing? Is there an MA angle in here?

California Dreaming: One of the three editorials from this Sunday's Times. 1. What are you thoughts on the content? 2. How does the form/style match and complement that content? Is this a successful editorial? Remember, an editorial is the voice of the newspaper, an unsigned opinion written by the Editor-in-Chief.

Facebook:
I thought this article was great. It was funny, easy to read and I felt like I knew something about the writer. She was spot-on about a lot of things (facebook being a time-suck, and people having online multiple personality disorder) and as someone who has a facebook and experiences all those things, it made it even more amusing. The lede was funny, the end was funny, it was all good. I mean, it wasn't news or anything, but it was clever. And the graphic with the rock, also clever.

I kind of wanted to read the typography essay (the link doesn't work), so I'll skip 'California Dreaming' and search for it.

Link is fixed. woohoooo. okay.
Typography:
I thought this was a brilliant article. Might be because I love fonts. I felt that the author really captured why we use fonts. Fonts are meant to more accurately convey what the letters are saying, and he explained that quite well. What would have been nice, however, would be some more graphics. I had to look up all the fonts mentioned, and it would be nice if pictures were included. Or, since it's online, a slideshow of fonts mentioned. That would make a good opportunity to add some information about the fonts (who designed them/when...etc.). There were a few pictures at the bottom with descriptions of a few fonts, but not all the fonts mentioned, and the pictures were small and easily missed. Other than the graphics bit, I thought it was a well-written and informative article.

I loved the typography article. I thought it was very witty (they made up some words like fontroversies versus controversies) and the observations he made in the article were very true. I think that fonts have just as big an impact on the reader as the actual words do. One thing I would have liked to see, like Annie said, were graphics. I had to look up Obama and Hillary's campaign posters to compare. I did like, however, that this article made me aware of my reactions to different fonts. I know I love to use Courier when I type ups paragraphs for school because it gives off a neat and clean feel. When I pulled up a Pages document to compare different fonts, each one made me feel different emotions. This article was overall well written and interesting to read.

I really enjoyed reading the facebook article! It was super amusing and a quick and simple read. True, it is not a news article, but it is very relevant to the majority of Americans. I do agree that facebook is dying or will die soon because many people are annoyed by all the changes. Then again, I still see myself post poning hw to check it. Her style of writing is also very compelling because it is light and sarcastic making the piece a really interesting reaad. Since it is an opinion piece I think it's appropriate.
