FRIDAY WE'LL BE IN THE ANNEX!!!!
This is a place for the staff of the MA Voice to engage in on-line discussion about issues relating to and inspiring good writing, reading and journalism.
Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.
Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

The school is lowering the number of tardies (to 3) before On-Campus Restriction kicks in
Yes, it wouldn’t harm anyone and it has to do with the school
A student was assaulted on campus by another student
No, we want to protect the students’ identity. Also, the administration probably wouldn’t let us
A student was assaulted on campus by a stranger
Yes, don’t go into exact details but maybe turn it into more of a “violance awareness article”
An article containing "profane" words
If they add point to the article then yes, but if it blatantly uses profane language for no reason then it shouldn’t be printed
An editorial saying the Head of School is incompetent and should be fired
If there is a legitimate argument for it, then yes
An editorial calling for a one-day boycott of classes
No, it would be an abuse of power
An article about teachers most willing to give students A’s
No, It would be hard to back this up
A review of an NC-17 rated movie.
Yes, it’s just a review and it’s not like we’re showing the film
An advertisement for cigarettes
No, we don’t print advertisements and also cigarretes are illegal for most people in the school and also dangerous
The Spirit assembly was delayed because one of the spirit captains was nervous and threw up
No, we don’t want to hurt a students’ reputation
The acting in the school play was very poor
If this is a review of the play then yes
A student was suspended for drinking at a school dance
No, the administration would take care of it and there really is no reason to print it. Everyone would know anyways.
The school is lowering the number of tardies (to 3) before On-Campus Restriction kicks in

An article containing "profane" words
DEPENDS ON USAGE/whether it is appropriate and necessary usage
An editorial saying the Head of School is incompetent and should be fired
DON'T PUBLISH-could harm the voice as well as insult principal
An editorial calling for a one-day boycott of classes

1) The school is lowering the number of tardies (to 3) before On-Campus Restriction kicks in
yes - this is a piece that would spark positive controversy. Students, teachers and parents would have an opinion, and the newspaper would be a good medium to spread awareness of the change.
2) A student was assaulted on campus by another student
No - we shouldn’t attack individual students, and we wouldn’t be able to get reliable, unbiased interviews.
3) A student was assaulted on campus by a stranger
yes - if the student was comfortable, then we could spread awareness of a possible threat
4) An article containing "profane" words
no - there is no reason to use profane words, with an entire universe of other words to flaunt in our writing
5) An editorial saying the Head of School is incompetent and should be fired
Yes, because it is an editorial and not a news piece. Any member of the staff should be allowed to express their opinion.
6) An editorial calling for a one-day boycott of classes
Again, being an editorial and not a news piece, I say yes.
7) An article about teachers most willing to give students A’s
Yes, because it is not negative and funny. With lot’s of sources, it would be good.
8) A review of an NC-17 rated movie.
No because the Voice’s audience is the entire student body, and the entire student body
is not eligible to view an NC-17 rated movie.
9) An advertisement for cigarettes
No, because the majority of the MA student body can not smoke, and because its illegal for almost everyone at MA there would be no reason to print one. Additionally it harms your health, and we do not want to harm our peers. Plus why would we print an advertisement, it's inappropriate for the MA community.
10) The Spirit assembly was delayed because one of the spirit captains was nervous and threw up
No, that would just be mean. There is no reason to expose the person for having stage fright. If we bust people we should bust them for doing bad things, not for being nervous.
11) The acting in the school play was very poor
No, it would just be rude because they worked really hard and we would be alienating a part of the community for a bad night. There might be supernatural event that skewed the acting.
12) A student was suspended for drinking at a school dance
No, it makes no sense because its gossip, we would be attacking them for a mistake they made, and no one would be willing to reveal the facts, it would be all opinion.
The school is lowering the number of tardies (to 3) before On-Campus Restriction kicks in
Print - get reactions, might be able to change decision to something better or worse
A student was assaulted on campus by another student
Don’t print - could be offensive
A student was assaulted on campus by a stranger
Print - people should know about that
An article containing "profane" words
Edit and print - if can’t edit, get permission and print
An editorial saying the Head of School is incompetent and should be fired
Don’t print - offensive
An editorial calling for a one-day boycott of classes
Don’t print - not a ton of people would read it, teachers would get mad
An article about teachers most willing to give students A’s
Don’t print - offensive
A review of an NC-17 rated movie.
Print - if many people see it, as long as the article isn’t too profane it shouldn’t matter
An advertisement for cigarettes
Don’t print - why would you print it anyway?
The Spirit assembly was delayed because one of the spirit captains was nervous and threw up
Print with permission from Spirit captains
The acting in the school play was very poor
Don’t print - offensive
A student was suspended for drinking at a school dance
Either print without names or don’t print, could start lots of rumors and people probably know anyway

1. The school is lowering the number of tardies (to 3) before On-Campus Restriction kicks in
Yes, it is interesting, informative, and controversial - people would read this.
2. A student was assaulted on campus by another student
I think this would be widely publicized already - it may also be a police investigation. Regardless, I think that the school would take action with or without any story by the school newspaper. Perhaps there could be a story on a broader topic of bullying.
3. A student was assaulted on campus by a stranger
If it were not a police investigation, by all means, interview the student about it and possibly Travis and any eye witnesses. This would make a great article about on-campus security etc.
4. An article containing "profane" words
The language needs to be appropriate, but if a quote includes ‘profane’ words, it needs to be necessary to the article.
5. An editorial saying the Head of School is incompetent and should be fired
Absolutely not. There’s a difference between spewing vitriol and constructive criticism, even in an opinion piece. At the very least, it is not a student journalist’s place to demand the school to fire a teacher or start a witch hunt.
6. An editorial calling for a one-day boycott of classes
I think there would have to be a reason for cutting classes. Also, the article would be telling others to partake in something against school rules/provisions, so it could be dangerous.
7. An article about teachers most willing to give students A’s
This article would be gossipy and lacking ethics. The Voice should not be treated as a tabloid; however, it should be allowed to post articles regardless of
8. A review of an NC-17 rated movie.
It isn’t something relevant to a major portion of students. As long as it’s appropriate it could be published, but what would that accomplish?
9. An advertisement for cigarettes
No advertising, and the content is against school rules anyway.
10. The Spirit assembly was delayed because one of the spirit captains was nervous and threw up
Maybe. Depends on how it was written. If it was written with the intent to make that person feel badly, then NO, surely he/she has dealt with enough stress. If it was written to inform students and was handled with care, then yes.
11. The acting in the school play was very poor
Again, it must be useful/informative criticism
12. A student was suspended for drinking at a school dance
Yes. Absolutely write about this, because they had full control to do this, and it would be very interesting to read.
