Same rules as the last time. Publication date will early January. Please keep that in mind when coming up with ideas.
Please post 5-7 ideas for the second edition of the year. Be sure to read the other ideas BEFORE you post your own. You can elaborate on another person's post (with a citation, of course). Be specific and try to format each idea as such:
Article Idea:
Must interviews:
Why will people want to read this:
This is a place for the staff of the MA Voice to engage in on-line discussion about issues relating to and inspiring good writing, reading and journalism.
Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.
Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

Why: This is a new game sweeping the campus that is addicting! Everyone loves it and the new club has quite a lot of followers!!
2. New years resolutions
Interviews: Students of all grades, teachers, faculty
Why: It would be fun to hear what people had made for their new years resolutions and it would be fun to find out about people after a long break.
3. Jazz/Rock Concerts
Interviews: bob S. Music students
Why: A short piece on the music department and the upcoming shows. Maybe it could write about how the bands have practiced over the break and what they plan to play. People love these concerts so they'll definitely be excited to read about it
4. SENIORS ARE DONE
Interviews: SENIORS, college counselors, teachers
Why: A fun piece on second semester seniors/senioritis and the fun that seniors plan on having now that they have finished college apps!!!
5. Post xmas Cooking Ideas
Interviews: teachers, faculty, students
Why: A fun and creative piece on what to do with leftovers from Christmas. It spark good cooking and fun lunches!
1.)Fastest routes to school
Show a map of the fasted routes to MA.
Interviews:Long time drivers to MA:seniors, Lynne Hansen, Joe Harvey etc
Why? Every morning I wonder if there is a better route to school than the one I am on but am never willing to take the risk. As a carpool driver next year I am interested in knowing the secret tricks to getting to school on time.
2.)Winter Break Trips:
Show pictures from trips from various MA students and a travel guide for where to go if you're ever there.
Interviews: Students from different grades
Why? It is always nice to see pictures and hear where different people in the MA community spent their vacations. The travel guide will also be useful in future travels and trips.
3.)Overview of Communications evening:
I think it would be a good article to report about topics and conversations held at communications evening.
Interviews: Peer Resource students, Sanjai, Charis, Parents who attended/students who attended
Include: Funny quotes from the evening and interesting conversations that came up.
For parents and students who were not able to attend communications evening it will still benefit the community.
4.)Experiment life without Google
An article of someone trying to go a certain amount of time without the search engine websites and see how this impacts someones life.
Must Interviews: Big google users/antigooglers.
This would be an interesting article that would show the unoticable impact that websites like google have on students lives.
Seeing Teachers out of school
I know recently numerous I have heard numerous stories about seeing teachers while being out on a weekend.
Must Interviews: Teachers about where they have seen their students(eg:Travis, Lynne etc/Vice Versa)
This would be a fun story to read because its amusing and funny to read about awkward and random places people have run into eachother.
1. Looking back on 2010
Interviews: Any teachers/students
Why: Many interesting and exciting events occurred this past year both at MA and around the world in general (examples: Giants win the world series, Mark Mathabane is keynote speaker for COD, oil spill etc...) We could compile a list to recognize all of these events and get students/teachers perspectives on how they viewed each of these events and what significance they had on the MA community as a whole.
2. WISE (group where girls get together every other Monday to talk about being female in the community)
Interviews: Joani Lacey, Lyla Wilton, Lauren Phipps, Olivia Davis... any other girl who is apart of WISE.
Why: Up until this year I had never even heard of the group WISE and not until recently did I learn what it is actually about. After talking to some of my friends who are in the group, I became really interested in the issues they discuss during their meetings and I think it would be interesting to take a closer look at the significance of this group and how is it beneficial to girls at MA.
3. PDA on campus
Interviews: Any couples/students in general, deans, teachers.
Why: I mentioned this idea for the last edition, but I still think this could be a really fun and entertaining article on how the MA community views PDA and how much is too much...
4. Dress code
Interviews: Deans, Teachers, any students
Why: Today in Spanish class Anayansi was telling the class about how uncomfortable she feels when she can see down a girls shirt or a boys butt when they sag too much. She also mentioned how she feels it can be unsafe for girls to be walking around San Rafael in such revealing clothing. Although many would argue that MA's relaxed dress code is the best thing ever, is it sometimes distracting? What are some different reactions between teachers and students, and is it more of an issue with boys or with girls?
5. Basketball
Interviews: Coach (both boys and girls), and student on the basketball team.
Why: I think sometimes the basketball team is under appreciated... I know I've never been to a game. Being the only winter sport, I think it needs a little more recognition. Also, J O'malley is a coach this year and I think it would be interesting to get her perspective as both a coach and a teacher.
1. Hot Chocolate Hotspots
Scope out the best hot chocolate places in the bay area! A map graphic like the seven wonders piece could work, and maybe a catchy title playing on HOT chocolate and HOTspot?
Why: It will get everyone in the winter spirit, and SF residents will be looking for a new hot chocolate hotspot to replace Bittersweet (former chocolate shop on Fillmore.)
Must interview: Everyone---people from a diverse range of places (Marin, SF, East bay, West Marin...)
2. Skiing vs. Snowboarding
Interview the community about the merits of skiing vs. snowboarding.
Why: It seems to be the most hotly contested winter debate, and we could do a lot with it: polls, charts, graphics, etc.
Must interview: Everyone, teachers included---maybe some teachers are famously good skiers/snowboarders?
3. Finals Totals
I don't know if there is a specific name for this, but it's just totals, ex: total flashcards made: 347, total hours studied: 34, total events missed out on: 7, etc.
Why: As a celebration of another round of finals survived.
Must interview: Range of students, maybe Charis/Sanjai/Joani etc. if we were to expand
4. Cookies
Exchanges of family recipes
Why: Because everyone loves cookies, and it's a winter thing
Must interview: Everyone
5. Indoor activities
What to do on rainy, windy, winter days; how to have fun and stay dry.
Why: Winter-themed, and everyone likes a quick boredom cure
Must interview: Everyone
1) Top 10 of 2010
Like Avery said, I think it would be interesting to look back on 2010 and important news that occurred in the last year, new fads, popular music, books, movies, etc.
Interviews: teachers and students to see what they thought were the most noteworthy moments in 2010
Why: It would give everyone a chance to look back on the year. It could also be a cool article to reminisce on the last year.
2) Students going to semester abroad programs
Interviews: the juniors who will be leaving soon
Why: It would not only be a way to say goodbye to the people departing, but also a chance to hear about the semester abroad programs MA offers. It could give more information about it to people who are thinking about going on one later on in high school.
3) Trash on Campus
Interviews:maintenance staff
Why: I have heard announcements in assembly and in the bulletin about the trash around campus. I have also noticed it a lot after lunch on the cafeteria tables. I think this would be a good way to remind everyone about the importance of cleaning up by give them a chance to hear from people who do.
4)Absence of AP classes
Interviews: teachers, upperclassmen
Why: I think the fact that MA doesn't have AP classes is interesting and this article would give a chance for teachers to explain why and students to voice their opinions about it.
5) Musicians/Songs who don't get enough recognition
Interviews: students, faculty, staff and ask what their favorite song or artist is that is relatively new and not really mainstream
Why: This could be a fun article with cool graphics of the interviewee with the album they talk about next to them. I always love hearing what other songs people like and it would also be a good way for people to find new music to listen to.
1. Article Idea: Skiing Hotspot Face-Off
It is no secret that many students and faculty at MA partake in snow sports during the winter. People always talk about which destinations they go to and often where the best ski/snowboard spot to go is debated between faculty and students. We could make this more of a graphic heavy article, with images of various ski resorts in Tahoe, Utah, Wyoming, etc. and quotes of students and faculty who go there. We could even have a panel judge each place; it could be reminiscent of our many "best spots off campus" articles with out-of-five star ratings.
Must Interviews: Students, teachers, community
Why people will want to read this: For anyone who is a skier or snowboarder, defending your favorite mountain is a great part of the snow culture. This could be a fun, graphic-heavy article that would draw a lot of attention.
2. Article Idea: The Best Present You Ever Received
While the holidays are centered around giving, it's no question that getting presents adds to the magic of the holiday spirit. This could just be a half a page of quotes about the best presents people in the community have gotten in their lifetimes.
Must Interviews: Everyone
Why people will want to read this: It's interesting to hear not only what other people get for presents, but what is important to them. It would give a good close to the holiday break.
3. Article Idea: Cancer-Causing Cellphone Use
Recently I've heard a lot of parents bringing up the fact that cellphones can cause cancer. I know that I have my phone on me a lot and I know some of my friends even sleep with their phones right next to them. Something as serious as a cancer-causing property in phones should be addressed because of how many students use their phones extraneously.
Must Interviews: Get info about these new studies from different sources, teachers, students, parents
Why people will want to read this: I'm sure a lot of people could benefit from this article. If students saw an article about how to more safely handle cellphones in order to lower the risk of being exposed to cancer, I think they would read it. Also I'm sure people have heard a lot about the topic and would want clarification on some things.
Part two:
4. Article Idea: Stereotypes of Various High Schools
I proposed something like this with my last ideas, but I still think this could be a really successful article. We could explore the different stereotypes high schools in Marin and San Francisco get, focusing more heavily on MA. We ourselves have many other schools label us as "hippies," "gay," and "too green." Where do these stereotypes stem from and what are some stereotypes for other schools and how do we compare?
Must Interviews: Students and faculty at MA (especially those who have been here longest), also I think it would be great to get some opinions from students from other schools on what they think of MA. This would introduce a new perspective in The Voice.
Why people will want to read this: I think the addition of other schools' opinions of us would excite students and make them want to read what other people have to say. I think in general it's a pretty good topic that a lot of people would find interesting, because it's pretty prevalent especially for students who have friends at other schools.
5. Article Idea: Profile on an Interesting Person
Vague title, I know. But basically I think that a lot people at MA (especially teachers and faculty) have extremely interesting lives or events that have happened to them that many students and other community members don't know about. James Shipman, for example, has great stories about getting drafted into the Vietnam War. I'm sure there are so many other extremely interesting stories that community members have to share. On the blog, we read really great profile pieces from the NYTimes and elsewhere. I think we should try something like this; if the writing is good and the person's story is interesting, I think it would be a great piece.
Must Interviews: Only one person (or if we decided to do more than one story then more than one person) that has been decided on by editors/staff
Why people will want to read this: These personal, well-written profile pieces are really a treat to read. With all of the extraordinary people at MA, I am sure that great stories are all around us. Depending on how one of these stories went, it could be a semi-regular addition to the paper.
1. Favorite ski/snowboard mountains
this article would find out students' favorite mountains, and favorite places on the mountain. We could also award mountains with the best of some thing like best terrain park, best powder, or best groomed, and whatever else we can think of.
Interview: Any big skiers or snowboarders
why: This could be a fun article that would give students some good ideas of places to go to have some snowy fun
2. Bananagrams
Pretty much the same as Maddy's idea except that we take a more broad approach and just do banangrams in general.
Interview: bananagrams club leaders, students, Doreen, maybe other teachers too to see if they think it's doing for kids like expanding vocabulary.
why: I think everyone has seen people playing this during lunch or a free and it would tell people a little more about why there are people yelling at each other while playing scrabble without a board.
3. Chamber gladiators
I feel like not that many people know about chamber gladiators unless they are involved in it or have a friend in it. We would give them a chance to tell people more about what they are other than just another band.
interview: Bob, chamber gladiators, students to see how much people actualy know about them
why: I don't think they get enough publicity and credit for their hard work, and this article could get them some more supporters
4. Not so happy meals
Recently the toys in happy meals have been banned. I think it would be interesting to see what our community thinks of it and how it affects us and the people around us.
interview: students, teachers with young kids, sean
why: The toys were banned in an effort to reduced childhood obesity and I haven't heard much about if it's keeping the kids away or just pissing them off. We could find out if the student body thinks it's a good thing or completely unnecesary.
1. Article Idea: Honoring the Game
Interviews: Josh F, Eric J, Crystal, and other faculty and students involved in the athletic department at MA
Why: Recently, there have been announcements regarding the sportsmanship of fans at athletic events. This year we even have a large poster in the gym that states: "We honor the game". Last year Ken Lannick had a 20 minute speech about sportsmanship at MA. This is definitely a hot topic that we need to cover.
2. Article Idea: (To add to Adam's idea): A diagram of popular ski resorts and their distance from MA
Interviews: Anyone who goes up to Tahoe
Why: I think it would be fun to create a map of ski resorts, their pros and cons, and the distance, and possible the means that one can travel from MA to the mountain.
3. Article Idea: By the Numbers
Interviews: Josh F and rest of athletic department
Why: So I have mentioned this numerous times before, including last year, but the Voice should have a "by the numbers" as Sports Illustrated has had sucess with. This could be how many miles during a cross country season does the team run, or how many laps does the swim team take during the course of their season.
4. Article Idea: Dodgeball Club
Interviews: Isaac, Brett C, Nic T, and dodgeball members
Why: Since the recent creation of the club there has been a dodgeball tournament with many six person teams of both genders. An overview of the club would be a splendid addition to kicking off their creation.
5. Article Idea: The recent charges of having a Senior Page
Must Interviews: Yearbook faculty and staff
Why: This year, each day late after the deadline that you do not place your senior page on the server, the Yearbook is charging a one dollar fee to your incidental account. They say that in past years part of student's tuition would be used to cover the late fees charged by the company that publishes the yearbook. However, since the current Seniors for the past three years have had to pay for the other Seniors' late senior pages, why do we have to be suddenly charged this year? I understand that they have taken this measure to reduce the number of late senior pages, but the senior page tradition is full of tardiness.
Article Idea- By the Numbers- Winter Break
This idea would be kind of difficult to execute, but I think with enough effort it could be really cool. For example: Miles traveled, planes taken, states/countries/continents traveled to, days of vacation, etc.
Why people would want to read this: Slightly less traditional take on winter break, but still visually appealing and a fun read
Must interviews: Everyone….I think this idea really only works if everyone is included
Article Idea: Getting back finals
Finals will already be over and the teachers will be handing back the crucial papers within the first few weeks January (when this issue is coming out…I think.) I know there are always some kids very protective and secretive over their grades, while others audibly mumble yes! or no! (depending on their result) It could be kind of interesting to profile the dreaded time when finals are handed back accompanied with the different reactions. Also, maybe we could interview teachers about how our results compare to those previous years…
Must interviews: teachers, student body, etc.
Article Idea: Second Semester Electives
I believe there are certain electives/courses that are only offered in the spring…I would give an example, but I’m not exactly sure what they are. I think, however, this issue would be a good opportunity to talk about such electives.
Must Interviews: Students enrolled in these courses as well as the teachers
Article Idea: 10 (could be more) things to look forward to in 2011/ Top things of 2010:
For example: In December, all US troops are supposed to leave Iraq, Estonia is adopting the Euro (exciting!!), I’m sure there are better, more substantial events happening as well. Also, I like Avery’s idea of recapping the top events of 2010. For example, possibly the World Cup, the Olympics in Vancouver, or the mid-term elections, along with the major local events.
Article Idea: I really like Lena’s idea about gifts/presents! I think that writing about best gifts (given or received) over the 2010 holiday season would be a creative way to recap winter break and definitely not as expected.
I just realized that I only posted 4 ideas
5. Best winter foods/ activities
Why: This could be a fun article or be more graphic based to give people more ideas of things to do when it's rainy or snowy other than go skiing or see a movie and things to eat that can are especially good to eat when it's cold.
interview: students
1. Fun things people who stayed at home over winter break did
Why: Even though everyone's always talking about their recent vacation a lot of people can't afford to go somewhere exciting, so it's important to show that you can have a fun winter break even if you stay home!
Interviews: People who stayed home over winter break
2. New SCHOOL semester resolutions
Why: Sometimes hearing about other people's goals makes you more motivated, and it would be interesting to see what people have struggled with and want to get better at.
Interviews: Stand-out students
3. Freshmen's Opinion on their first semester of school
Why: Freshmen are always left out of things in my opinion, so people would be interested to see what's going on in the freshmen class and likewise for the freshmen-everyone likes to be included!!
4. Bios and Interviews of some employees at MA (i.e café workers, the guys in the golf carts)
Why: A lot of people wonder what the names of the café workers, gardeners, or administrators that we don't see every day are. This would be an interesting get-to-know of them.
Interviews: Dejanique, the other lady (see this is why this article is necessary because I don't know her name!!!) any workers or administrators who are key
5. Decline in Quality of Cafeteria Food
Why: There have been a lot of complaints recently about how gross the food is at school. This would be an interesting topic to explore and read about.
Interviews: Maybe Chef Sean, Outraged students
1. Second Semester Preview: Implementing New Years Resolutions
Interviews: All students, teachers
Why: It would be a great way to start off the second semester and reflect on the first. This could be done by just doing blurbs about people's New Year's resolutions, personal, academic, or silly.
2. For Sports: Featuring Sports Outside of MA
ie) Fencing, Horseback Riding, Rugby, Crew
Interviews: Student who participate in these sports some are VERY talented
Why: profiles on certain individuals or even certain sports as a whole with highlights on some individuals would capture a lot of interest. Many athletes go under the radar because they dont play at MA and this would be a great way to make them known
3.Facebook: How does it really affect our lives?
I know I've suggested this before but I think it really has more of an impact on our lives than many are willing to acknowledge
Interviews; Students, Teachers, people that are addicts and people that never go on
Why: I think it would be interesting to shed light on how much time is really spent on it, how much time is spent procrastinating, and what life would be like without it
Giving Thanks Article
Interview: student body and teacher
This article would be a nice article to have in our next edition because we will have recently had thanksgiving. The article would consist of different students and teachers and what each person feels thankful for.
Poll comparing skiiers with snowboarders
Interview: student body
This poll would be interesting because I have at least always wondered if snowboarding is really as popular as skiing or if skiing is still the primary winter sport.
Recap of Fall sports
Interview Students,players and coaches
This would be a nice way to recap and highlight the different sports that are coming to an end here as winter sports begin. Especially after the success that MA sports have been having.
I also agree with Tess an article recapping communications evening would be nice.
Limewire and other illegal music downloading sites
Interviews: student body
An article that would look into how many students do indeed consistently use Limewire and other illegal music websites rather then buying there music on Itunes.
1. goals for 2011 and preview of 2011, things to look forward to: concerts, minicourse, outings, etc.
this would be interesting because along with reflecting on 2010, it's also exciting to look forward to what will come in the new year!! especially for freshman who haven't experienced second semester at MA. people to interview: all students and faculty.
2. helping around the community--what are things that need help/who is in need? what can you do to help that would be beneficial?
this would be a good article to write because i know that sometimes around the holidays people forget how lucky we are to get presents and have food to eat in a warm house. I believe that part of the holiday spirit is helping out people in need so if we suggested things that people could do to help out i think a lot of people might actually do some of them. must interviews: CSC, lauren toker, anyone who knows organizations that need volunteers.
3. winter activities around bay area: Kind of like Julia was saying, it would be nice to have an article that listed fun things to do during winter around the bay area (especially for people who aren't going on vacations). This includes ice skating, where to get hot chocolate, where to do good holiday shopping, fun holiday movies to see, etc. Anything to get us in the holiday mood!
4. is technology going to take over books and newspapers? as we have already seen, there are kindles and Ipads where you can easily read many books and tons of newspapers and magazines. although this new technology is very exciting, will there eventually be no physical books or newspapers? wont that be sad? i think it would be interesting to get a perspective from MA about how people feel about technology taking over. must interviews: librarians, teachers (english), students with ipads/kindles.
5. article from the freshman: how do you like MA so far? I think it would be really fun to go ask freshman how they are liking MA and what they are loving and what they are finding is difficult or easy. must interviews: freshman
4. College Highlight: Early Decision Frenzy
Interviews: senior, both Jennifers (college counselors)
Why: This year more seniord than ever have applied early decision and it has created a "frenzy" and pressure for others to follow suit. And people want are nosy and want to know about college!
5. Volunteer Opportunities over the Holidays
Interviews: Lauren Toker, students who are very involved in community service
Why: People are looking for organizations to voulnteer at outside of the ones that everyone knows about. It could just be a little blurb/ shout out for under publicized yet valuable organizations
1. Solar panels at MA
In my APes class we recently learned about the numerous reasons MA doesn't have solar panels. I never knew why, and others probably don't either. Some of the reasons we don't could easily be changed. The article could focus on what students can do to bring this clean energy to campus.
Interviews: Liz Gottleib, Travis, and whoever would be in charge of making these types of decisions
Why: Solar panels seem like a very MA thing to have, and I always find myself wondering what we can do as a community to make it happen
2. The cost of skiing
The article could weigh the hefty price of skiing, and the effect it has on who can be a member of the skiing community at MA. Today, just a day's lift ticket can range upwards of $70, which is crazy.
Interviews: Ski club members, students who ski/others who don't (maybe ones from different financial backgrounds)
Why: Lunchtime talk about skiing, and experiences from hitting the slopes are limited to the kids who's families can afford skiing, and many probably feel left out because of it. This is never really thought about, and should be brought up.
3. The cars we drive
Everyone's care says something about them, and often people fit their car perfectly. It would be a fun article talking about various student-car relationships/pairings, and what things certain cars suggest/say about the person driving.
Interviews: Faculty and students with cars filled with personality
Why: It would be a fun topic, and I always find myself thinking about it
4. How to stay on task after sports season, or during
With various sports recently ending and starting up, an article that discusses the various effects this shift can have on students would be good. Sports practices influence the amount of time and quality of time we spend on homework and studying, and the article could give advice and strategies on how to cope with the new schedule.
Interviews: Athletes, coaches
Why: the article would pertain to the majority of the schools population (even theater kids... the shift between sports could be similar to that of the shift between plays)
5. Community service at MA
The article could discuss the various community service opportunities there are, and what each one does. It could be more of an informative article than one discussing an issue.
Interviews: CSC leaders, crossroads organizers, Courtney Jacobson
Why: it could help kids with lots of free time become interested in a certain community service opportunity, or just spread the 'giving back' spirit.
1. Solar panels at MA

Best Winter (November/December) movie
Just a poll with maybe 5 or 6 options
Interview: everyone
Why: Good movie ideas if they're still in theaters; if not, it might get people interested for its DVD release
I'd like to echo Ilana's idea about getting back finals.
I'd also like to echo Maddy's idea about Bananagrams Club, as that game is very fun, and I have seen a lot of people playing it.
1. Article Idea: Winter Break travels/ adventures
Must interviews: Students who went to cool places over winter break. Also, students with interesting traditions over winter break can share what they did. We could include pictures of people on their travels but also at home doing some fun activity/tradition.
Why will people want to read this: Students will be curious to see where/what their peers went/did over break.
2. Article Idea: 2011 Movies/books/events that are coming out.
Must interviews: Students who are excited about certain events coming out in 2011.
Why will people want to read this: Students will be interested to know about the upcoming events that will take place in 2011.
3. On Alex's idea, maybe we could make a poll of not only best movies, but also books, songs, and albums.

5. Article Idea: Winter Play Preview
Must interviews: Students who are in the play, the director david. We could also include pictures of the cast rehearsing during dress rehearsals, etc.
Why will people want to read this: Every year, students look forward to either being in the winter play or watching the winter play. It would be a good article for the MA community.
Teen Activism:
Interviews: students involved in programs, leaders etc.
I thought it'd be good to have something on the power teens can have. There are lots of programs/causes Ma students are involved in that we could focus on.
Overview of 2010:
interviews: anyone, really
Big things that happened in 2010. A summary of the year before 2011 begins.
and on the same note....
Looking Forward into 2011:
Maybe some resolutions, things that will/might happen in 2011. Keeping in the New Years spirit.
Procrastination:
Interviews: students, teachers
Every single person procrastinates. In fact I'm writing this post a day late. It's widespread and nobody seems to know how to stop procrastinating.
Fall Sports Standings:
Interviews: athletes, coaches, Josh F.
It might be nice to have a little thing of how all our fall teams did, because I sure don't know. Maybe season highlight, MVP, ranking in league...etc.
Oh and I forgot that I still think it would be a really good idea to make a Voice at some point next year to hand out to shadows.
