1. While the article is an interesting read, what do you think of the graphic? This is from the Sunday Style section of the NYTimes. How could we use this simple layout and design spread to tell a story at MA? There's lots of room to tell stories with pictures, even in our publication. Thoughts? Comments? Ideas?
2. It's too important a moment to pass up, so comment on two of the front page designs from Wednesday, November 5. You can look through national, international, and alternative news outlets. There's some pretty cool and varied ideas. What worked best? What design did you like? Any headlines more interesting than others? What would you have done? Any ideas to bring to The Voice front page?
This is a place for the staff of the MA Voice to engage in on-line discussion about issues relating to and inspiring good writing, reading and journalism.
Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.
Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

Alright - here goes
The Perú newspaper's headline Histórico, which i can only guess means History was one of my favorites. It's so simple (one word...) yet so powerful. I also like the picture they used.
Also, the Gazetta from Poland with Obameryka, and I'm no polish expert, but i'm guessing that means Obamerica (Obama + America). This headline was also particularly brilliant because it shows the much-hyped change, summed up in a country's "new name"
Graphically, I love the DeMorgen from Belgium. Having "Change" in all of those languages is really powerful because it (literally) speaks to anyone.
Quickly - of the alt-newspapers, my favorite graphically was the LA CityBeat. With that said, the headline was pretty weak.
Some other notes - "Change Has Come to America" was REALLY popular as a quote-headline. Seeing it once would be cool and exciting, but seeing how so many American papers used this...not so much.
As far as this connecting to the Voice, I don't see too many options until 2012. With that said, the various graphics of the Electoral Map made me (sorry for this boastful moment) feel really happy with how the WHISPER came out.
wait - i change my guess to be Historical, not History
"Generation 0 Gets Its Hopes Up"
I read this article when it was first published and I was struck by the effectiveness of the graphic. It would be ridiculously easy to copy for the Voice if we found an article that would be appropriate.
Similarly to the New York Times article, a story about a large group of people would probably be the best so we could take advantage of a wide group of faces.
Or it could easily apply to things other than people (any group of object that are somehow unique) just as easily.
I really love the Generation O graphic and, like Julia said, it wouldn't be so difficult to execute. I know that a lot of people read the paper just to see if they're in it, so this would be a great way to engage the community as well as represent it. Maybe we could do a story through pictures? We could take up a full page and chronicle an event through photos and captions in a national geographic-type story. I'll think about an upcoming event that would be portrayed well through photo journalism.
I agree with Anjuli and Julia in that a similar graphic to the one shown in this article would be a great adition to the Voice. Also, as Anjuli said, many people read the paper just to see if they are in it. This graphic has enough things going on that people may take more time tto study it. It is a little more complex than a simple photograph and yet still very easy to execute. It is very relevant to the issue, but does not give anything away which may encourage people to read the article.
My favorite front pages were those that simply featured a giant photo of Obama and simple headlines. I think the best and most powerful is the Chicago sun times and its simple headline MR. President. I think that for something this momentous, a simple cover like this can say it all. I believe that it was not necessary for papers to offer any opinion on the significance of the moment because it was obvious. I thought that the one alternative paper with the headline don't mess this up was also unnecessary. One text heavy idea that i did like because it did not try to comment on the moment the gulf news from Dubai which featured the transcript of part of Obama's speech alongside him.
