Article Idea:
Must interviews:
Why will people want to read this:
Article will come out January 7. We will close this edition BEFORE December break, but will hand it out the first day AFTER break.
This is a place for the staff of the MA Voice to engage in on-line discussion about issues relating to and inspiring good writing, reading and journalism.
Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.
Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

Features: We could do an article about how many students went to Communications evening, how many students liked it and something they brought or learned from it. Besides interviewing students, we could interview Sanjai and Joani about what they thought about Communications Evening this year. Did they feel it was better, or worse than last year and why? Also, we could interview some parents who were at Communications Evening and see what they thought about it.
A&E
The one acts have been performed and done. Now there is a new play on the horizion called Peergynt. What do the actors in the one acts and peergynt think of both plays? The one act schedule was much easier but Peergynt requires more rehearsal time. Are people adapting easily, especially Freshmen who were in both plays? Also, what do actors in the one acts and Peergynt think of the content of both plays? The article could mostly be a comparison between plays. People we can interview are Annie Ellias and actors in both plays. People will want to read this because it talks about the plays which are a very important part of the MA community.
Features: This idea may be better for the February issue but I believe it needs to get into the newspaper at one point because alot of MA's students are involved in it and no one appears to talk about it. The Mock Trial at MA should probably have a profile. This is their third year at MA and in their first two years, they did not do too well in the Countywide Mock Trial competition. We could interview students who are involved in it and ask them how they plan to build on areas to improve from the last two years. Also, we could talk about their competition and strategies they have for preparing. Basically, I think they need a profile like the ping pong club which had one in the October issue. I do not know if Mock Trial had a profile in the 2007-2008 but if they did, we should write an article about how they have improved from their first year. People we need to interview are the coaches and students involved with Mock Trial. The coaches are Kelli Murray, Liz Grossman and Lauren Battaglia. The student captains are Dhruv Maheswari, Daniel Pulgram and Lauren Thomas. We could ask them about how they plan to lead the team. People will want to read this because the Mock Trial is a very important club in our school and people might want to follow how they plan to improve.
Features: Since the newspaper is coming out right after the break, we could do an article about where people plan to go during the break and if they plan to go anywhere at all. Maybe we should just do an article about what people want to do on the break. We should probably interview some teachers and some students. Maybe it would be better to do a survey. People will want to read this because they should be interested in what their friends did over the break.
Sports: On January 7th, Basketball season will be in full swing. Are the Freshman making a large impact on the team? Are there any Freshman stars on the teams? We should basically write an article about how the freshmen are making an impact on basketball. They are not a well represented part of our school so I think writing an article about them is a good idea. People we could interview are the basketball coaches and freshmen basketball players. People will want to read this because the basketball team is a large part of our school and people should be interested in the future of the basketball team.
Features:
MA student government.
Interview: Zia (junior rep), Nish, Walker, (the teacher who oversees the meetings) I know we elect our president, reps, and other positions in our government but do we know what an actual meeting is like? It would be cool to do a profile on those involved in our government and maybe sit in on a meeting and report to the school goes on, many people are curious!
Profile
New equity club on campus: G.R.O.W (Global Role of Women).
Olivia Howard and I are the leaders of a new club on campus that explores gender roles in our MA community and globally. We specifically focus on the role of women and will have many outreach projects to help women in our local community and outside of it. Celeste and Charis are our faculty advisors. This could be a very small/short piece in the newspaper.
Features
Senior Speeches
Why they happen and what are the most popular topics. We can interview seniors who have done theirs and how they feel about them. We can interview teachers who have been here for a long time and ask them about their favorites, ect.
Sports
I agree with Alec. We should focus on basketball for this issue and how its going. We should include interviews with both girls and boys basketball players.
A&E
peoples favorite plays. we can rate this years most popular plays/performances. this will give everybody an idea about what performances are going on and what is the best to see.
Features
local community service
we can interview students who do weekly service and then students who took service trips over the summer and other breaks
1. Sports: Winter sports
Why is basketball the only winter sport at MA? As a result of having only one winter sport, the play gets over-populated and a lot of kids end up having nothing to do during winter. What would be the logistics of including another winter sport? Why don't we have other winter sports?
Interviews: Josh Frechette, sporty students who don't play basketball.
2. Features/News: Holidays
We could do a general piece on the holidays, seeing if people like Christmas/Hannukah better or worse than New Years. We could also ask people if they have any traditions for Christmas/Hannukah/New Years.
Interviews: Students who celebrate dif. holidays.
3. A&E: Winter reading
A lot of students use winter break to catch up on their reading because they don't have time the rest of the year. We could do an article about how students have so much reading for school that they lose interest in books, and a lot of people stop reading in high school, but they pick it back up again over summer/winter breaks. We could profile what people are going to read and also poll people on whether or not they read during the normal school year.
Interviews: English teachers, different students.
4. A&E: Dance Program
I've noticed that the dance program at MA flies under the radar most of the time. Except for dance assemblies, a lot of people don't know what's happening with the dance program, and the concert in the spring often is under-attended. We could do a profile on the way MA is changing the dance program and see if students are more excited for the dance assemblies etc. this year.
Interviews: Dance teacher, students in dance.
5. A&E: Taiko
Taiko was introduced last year and was an exciting new course last year. How is the Taiko program doing this year? What are the students who are in it doing? A lot of people don't know what exactly Taiko is and are confused on if it is dance or music or what. We could do a profile on the Taiko class, promoting it and explaining the art of Japanese drumming
Interviews: Hideko, students in Taiko
Sports: Fall sports at the end of their seasons. How did they rank? What were the best games of each season? How do the captains think the team did, and did they reach the goals that they set at the beginning of the season?
Features: College Applications. What colleges were applied to by this year's senior class? Interview seniors on the application process and the selection process.
A&E: Art show. The art show will be coming up. What projects are going to be there? Interview teachers of the different art classes about the show and the process behind the work.
A&E: Recent movies to see. What were the favorite movies that have come out recently? What are some upcoming movies that people should see ?
Features: Clubs. What are M.A.'s clubs and organizations planning for the winter? Interview the leaders of the clubs about upcoming events and goals.
Sports:
Basketball but specifically girls basketball because there is a new coach who apparently has new philosophy.
Interviews: Coach Leong, Ari Wilks, Savanah Leaf, Erin Wilson, other basketball players...
Features:
Finals. I realize that they will be over when this comes out but it would be interesting to get perspective from both teachers and students about finals.
A&E:
Concerts. It would be good timing because the chorus/roots concert will have happened so we can include pictures and a review of that and then the jazz/rock concert is right after break so we can write a preview on that.
Sports:
Maybe an article on MA wildcats who do sports outside of school. I feel they don't get enough recognition. Sports like: dance, club soccer, crew, football etc.
Features:
Holiday traditions. From faculty and students!
Features: sleep and morning routines. When people around MA ask, "what did you get?" it's just as likely to be about number of hours of sleep as it is a grade. We could look at how much sleep the average person gets at MA and how they prepare for busy, overscheduled days. ex) we could focus on people's breakfasts of choice
A&E: I think that by the time this comes out, the first art show will have happened. We could do a review of it, or maybe just what people are expecting from it this year.
Interviews: Jenny, Anne, Katharine, Roberta, art students
Features: Where are the best places for holiday parties? Since the holidays are a festive time, there are lots of celebrations. Do people spend time with their families or have traditions with friends?
Features: Holiday Cuisine: we could do some holiday recipes, favorite dishes of the holiday season. Include Epicurean.
Sports: Basketball is the obvious thing. We could also do a wrap-up of sports like cross country, tennis, soccer etc.
A&E:
Thanksgiving/the holidays
What are peoples plans, we could compare and contrast where people are going, what they are doing, if they're seeing family or friends.
interviews: teachers and students with holiday plans
Sports:
coaches
we could do a profile of all the different basketball coaches. we could look at the different coaching styles and methods. how they got into the sport.
interviews: basketball coaches, basketball players (for their feelings about the coaches)
feature:
Electives:
this piece could look in depth at all the different elective choices here at MA. people don't always know very much about the different electives if they aren't in them. it could look at whats involved in them, who teaches them, what an average day in class is like.
interviews: students/teachers involved w/ elective courses.
Opinion/Feature (I'm not really sure):
the MA voice
we could write a peice about a day in the life of a student in journalism. whats involved in making the paper. how much work we put in. basically just showing how great we are and how hard we work.
interviews; us...
Features:
Republicans at MA
Ma is obviously a predominantly democratic school. I think lots of times the more conservative voices at our school don't really get heard. this could be an article to either give republicans a place to voice their views and opinions, or it could be more about how life is as a republican at a democratic school.
interviews: Ryan Kroner, Macmillan Jacobsen, other republicans at school
Claire:
1. BasketBall: I agree with profiling the basketball team. I have heard from a few people that there is a big lack of girls and there might not be enough people for a JV team. How will this affect the varsity? Does the season look promising for boys and girls with the loss of senior players and with the new girls coach, how will this affect the playing?
2.CrossRoads: We could also do a profile on Crossroads as the winter season approaches and more people join. I feel like a lot of people would be interested in crossroads if they knew more information about it. We could interview Lauren Toker, and a student who is a tutor and a student who is a fellow. What does being a tutor or fellow mean? We could discuss all of this in the profile.
3.Travels: We could feauture travels over thanksgiving/winter break kind of like in the first issue when we did summer travels. We could also discuss the legnth of winter break. Most schools don't have 3 weeks like we do, so that might be an interesting topic to discuss.
4. Teachers in High School : This is kind of a fun one, but we could do a section where we had pictures of teachers and administrators when they were in high school. I think it would be a really fun section to read as well as research and write.
5. New Years Resolutions: We could include a section where we interview students and teachers about new year's resolutions. What do they want to do differently in 2009 and what goals do they have for themselves whether they are athletic, academic, social, etc.
1. Do any MA students work part time jobs? If so, what kind of jobs do they have? What potential summer jobs are there? Interviews: People who hold part time jobs. People will want to read this because they are interested in the endeavors of their community members. Also, many people will be looking for jobs this summer, and this might help them in that process.
2. An article on the Top 9 of 2009 would be an interesting addition to the piece on the Top 10 of 2010. Looking back on 2009, what were the most influential events, both globally and at MA? People will want to read this because they like to celebrate and recap the year.
3. Romance on campus: MA vs. public schools like Redwood and Tam. This could possibly be a center spread for the February issue in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Are people more likely to develop relationships in small, close-knit communities like MA or bigger communities with more anonymity? What are the norms of dating at the two kinds of schools? We could do a survey on dating and love life at MA. People will want to read this mainly out of curiosity. People also want to know if they fit within a certain standard of normalcy.
4. I agree with Olivia that we should do an article on sleep in the daily life of a MA student. Does the average MA student get enough sleep? Do students feel that a lack of sleep affects their performance? We could do a survey of the students to find out how many hours of sleep they get per weeknight and weekend night. Are there any trends by grade? For example, as a grade, do juniors get less sleep per night than freshmen? If so, what are the reasons for these trends? People will want to read this because sleep is vital to MA students.
5. Travel-related community service opportunities. I know that Glenn Stanfield recruits for an organization, so we could interview him. We could also interview people, who have done these programs in the past, on their experiences. Many people are interested in participating in programs but don’t know how to get involved. Also, many students are looking for extracurriculars to put on their college applications.
Sports: There definitely has to be an article about basketball. It could range in focus from seniors, their hopes, and their outlooks on the season etc, to something profiling the coaches? Definitely talk to the seniors on the team (Pat, Davey, Spanky etc), Michael Coffino, new players on varsity, freshmen (?).
Op-Ed: I like the idea of republicans on campus. I recently started THINK club to help talk about diversity of thought and opinion (or lack thereof) around political and social issues that we deal with. However, I would take a different angle on the article by writing an op-ed on this about how uniformly democratic, and how unwilling we are to be critical of or critically think about our own views and where they come from. (I particularly think this should be an op-ed piece, but if it was more of a feature on closeted republicans and/or minority groups on campus, I would interview teachers such as Ken Lanik, Tom Woodward, Kevin Rees, or students that feel particularly ostracized not just for their beliefs, but by how they may be lumped together as a Marin Academy yuppie democrat.)
Feature: Chronicle the college process for seniors. The rush to finish applications, the stress, the interviews, the college-counselor meetings, recommendations (maybe expand on that), and all the components that go into getting things in on time and end up in solid schools barring specific circumstances. Could possibly focus less on interviews, more on profiling a couple students in a less-traditional-article sort of way. This would also fit well as most seniors are likely to be approaching their final deadlines as the article comes out.
A&E: We could do a feature on the new bands at MA, namely the electronic and reggae bands. Most of them have not played yet, but i believe there will be some sort of show right before winter break. Interviews could include people like Frank Gibbs and Joey Upjohn or whomever else is actually involved in these bands...I'm not really sure for myself except for those two guys. People also may appreciate some sort of follow-up or information about these groups given that they may have just preformed right before this article came out.
Features: Winter break! What are people up to? We could do something more specific such as the masses of students that spend a big portion of their winter breaks up in Tahoe...or maybe something a bit more broad about what students do in general, whether that's in the community, at home, or elsewhere. Interviews: various students or teachers that do interesting things over break.
Sports:
Recruitment at MA. The admissions office says they don't do it, but we all know they actually do. This is more of an investigative article, and if we decided to do it I'm not sure how much we would be told, but I think it's worth digging. Possible interviews are Dan Babior, coaches, players who think they've been recruited, etc.
Features:
Ruby's idea for a piece on the student government sounds really cool to me. I know members of the senate have been talking about making the meetings more visible and transparent to other students, so we could definitely do a cool piece on what actually happens in Senate. I think it would work best if we came at it with a light-hearted approach. A day in the life of a senate member, maybe?
Feature:
Second-semester senioritis. We could write a funny piece about how much seniors slack off after all of their apps are in . We could poll seniors about how hard they plan to work during their last semester at MA.
Sports:
The long-term role of varsity sports at MA. While we definitely have some top-notch athletes who will play D1 college sports, most of our athletes do not have such high aspirations. How far do people plan on taking their sports? There is a wide spectrum of answers here.
Features/A&E:
The change in the dance culture at MA. I wasn't here before but my sisters have told me how crazy the dances used to be. In recent years attendance to the dances has dropped and they did not generate rave reviews. However, this past dance not only seemed to be better received but also better attended. What has caused this increase? INterviews: seniors, freshmen, senate members.
1. Feature:
Like Katie said, finals are coming up. I think it would be interesting and helpful if there was a piece and what is to be expected for finals, and how people should go about studying for them. I know that this would greatly benefit the freshmen since they have never had finals at MA, and I am sure the study tips could also help all grades. We could interview teacher and ask them how long they expect their students to study for finals and then ask students how long they actually do study.
2. Feature:
It would be cool if we had an article or graph about statistics from each grade. For example, how many people in the grade play and instrument, how many different schools did the kids come from, etc. This would be great way for the voice to experiment with alternate story forms and also be a great way for grades to reflect on themselves and get a feel for what their class is made of.
3. Sports:
Now that fall sports are over, and only basketball is going on, there are a lot of athletes left waiting for their spring sport. We could interview some of those athletes to see how they stay in shape during the winter if they're not playing basketball.
4. Feature:
Siblings at MA. We could interview some of the siblings at MA and see what it's like to have your younger or older sibling go to the same school as you. We could ask them how much they interact with each other, if they have the interests in sports and academics, etc.
5. A&E:
With the world/roots/chorus concert approaching we could do a piece interviewing musicians performing to get a feel as to what we are to expect. We could possibly get a playlist of the concert. An interesting spin off this article would be to figure out what its like behind the scenes of the concert. How much preparation is made? How many people are on stage crew? What are some of the roles for stage crew? etc.
Feature: When is too soon to think about college? I know some of my friends and I have been grappling with this issue and would like to know what MA's official standpoint is, if anything. I would also like to compare students' beliefs vs. the college admin. department's schedule. It might even be a place to do a funny side-by-side between some overprepared student and Bill Meyer or something like that. Interview college admissions and students
Feature: Siblings at MA- This could go a couple of different ways. It could either talk about the benefits/problems involved with having a sibling at the school (awkwardness/having support/sharing old work with younger siblings) or it could go in the direction of stepping into the shadow of an older sibling and whether it's hard to create your own path. Interview siblings
Sports: Fantasy sports at MA- We could investigate the prevalence and importance of fantasy sports at MA. I know a lot of people do fantasy football and march madness brackets. Maybe we could have people make the case for why they are the best fantasy player at MA. Interviews- students who do fantasy, teachers??
Feature: I think a lot of people hold off getting their drivers licenses for one reason or another. It might be interesting to look at the culture around getting drivers licenses and how the no driving for sophomores rule affects that decision. Interviews- students, especially sophomores for their current experience, freshmen for whether they plan to go at it right away, upperclassmen who still don't have their permits for why not
Feature: How prepared is MA? Last year, the staff came up with a plan to continue school in the event of a swine flu epidemic. Is the plan still in place? Does MA have plans for other kinds of emergencies?
Oops.. Berk got in the siblings idea while I was writing.
1. Features:
This is similar to Jen's, but I think it would be interesting to do a piece on holiday traditions. We could do a profile on the winter holidays and how different students (and faculty members) celebrated them (Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, Saint Nicholas Day, and the like.) I would definitely be interested to read/learn about holidays that are not as popular, and I'm sure other students would too.
2. A&E:
I'm not sure if we should save this for next issue, but Literary Festival is from February 9 - 11. We could interview the English department and write about the concept behind Lit Fest/profile the authors that are coming to speak to the MA community.
3. Features:
Olivia's idea about sleep would make for an excellent article. We should also compare the MA student sleep average to a national average. Depending on whether or not it's higher or lower (I am guessing lower), what are some of the activities that lead to this lack of sleep other than homework (extracurriculars, commute, etc.)
4. Features:
The language program at MA. We could interview Joe Harvey, students, and faculty members on their opinions of Japanese being phased out and Mandarin being implemented into the curriculum. Any other languages that students wished were offered at MA?
5. A&E:
Though this is similar to Anna's, I think it would be interesting to do a small piece on what the MA community has been watching/reading/listening to (movies, music, and books, for example). People would most likely want to read this out of curiosity and an interest in adding to their movie/music collections.
Marshall
1) MA is a good distance away from a large amount of students making their commute from 10-35 minutes. Are MA students compelled to get their drivers licenses earlier than a national or state average? We can interview student drivers with and without carpools.
2) What are some alternative sports or physical activities that MA kids participate in if they do not want to play basketball or are vertically challenged (me). Some complain about having basketball being the only MA sport, but are there really many other options that we can consider. We can talk to Josh Fraschete, Kids who are participating in other activities, and possibly some vertically challenged kids.
3) Hearing announcements each morning isn't a daily routine for many kids in MA. If you have a teacher who just doesn't like it (Mary) or a teacher that reads it as fast as they can in spanish, you probably won't know what is coming up in clubs or other activities. We should make a club and other bulletin calendar for the month until the next edition comes out to keep kids up to date if they aren't reading the bulletin in class.
4)"The unsung heroes of MA" I think we should do a piece on under appreciated janitor crew at MA. We have such a beautifully kept campus that we take for granted and we don't know who its coming from. We see people cutting the grass daily, perking the flowers in front of the Marin Academy sign, and even cleaning up the trash left on the field. A piece about them would be really interesting and might make the student body more aware of helping keep the campus clean.
5) We have an extremely diverse amount of trees flowers and other plants on campus, creating a lush beautiful environment. HOWEVER, there is one notorious spot of wood-chips and dirt right next to the theatre that is a complete dead zone or referred to as "THE BLACK HOLE" Periodically there have been a couple plants or a small tree in the black hole, but none have survived. A soil analysis, and some investigative journalism on the black hole's forgotten past could draw hordes of readers waiting to discover the long lasting mystery of THE BLACK HOLE!
6) Like Alec I think a piece on communications evening would be really good. Its a big event held on campus and we already since we just had an article about Peer Resources it would be a great follow up
Feature: I like Claire's idea about New Years resolutions. We could write an article on what different MA teachers vision for the second semester. All the resolutions, from both teachers and students, would involve MA in one way or another.
Feature: Poetry Slam: I know that the poetry slams have been pretty controversial in the past, and I also know that a majority of MA students find poetry slam to be one of the best conventions our school has to offer. There will be an upcoming poetry slam this Thursday and I'm sure there will be another one within the coming months. We could do a piece on how students feel the poetry slam allows them to express themselves and why they think it is an important aspect of the school.
Interview ideas: Jim Baldwin, Tennessee, Melanie.
Jens idea about the dance program
Feature: I agree with many people's ideas to do a piece on holiday plans in the MA community. Whether people use the time off school to spend time with family, friends, see new movies, travel...
Although the issue will come out after the break is over, it would still be fun to have a piece on how different people spent their holiday.
A&E: Winter Fashion Trends: This would be similar to the Fall fashion piece that was done in the October issue, only focusing more towards winter trends and how students stay warm during the "cold" months. It could be fun if we involved teachers as well- and get their input on whether or not they think students cover themselves up enough during the winter.
Feature: It could be fun to do a piece on how the Freshmen feel after finishing their first semester at MA. It would be interesting to see what their take is on other grades now that they've gotten fully settled in, and whether or not going to school at MA is what they expected and how it is different.
(News, Feature)-THINK Club, I know jackson said something about it but i have no idea what it even is. We should do this as a news piece instead of op-ed and do a profile of what the club is all about. Interviews... Lucy M , Meera G...
(Feature or OP ED) -Evaluating Barack Obama... During the 2008 election, he was clearly the favorite of MA, but how well does the community think he's doing in office? What has been fulfilled and what do people want to see him accomplish during his presidency.
(Sports) FROLF... I think there was an article about this last year, but i still find people that are confused when they see other students flinging discs across the field. We should also highlight the off campus frolf-ventures... Interviews: Frank G, Isaac P, Noah D....
(News/Feature) Supposedly it's an "El Nino" year. This means it's going to rain and that means it's going to snow in tahoe. Since this edition will come out right when ski season is getting good, we could get input from students on their favorite resorts and tahoe experiences. (maybe even make a little rating system for favorite ski areas?)
(Feature/ OP ED) Are we prepared to live alone? We spend so much time at MA trying to prepare for college, but how ready are we to live without parents? There are so many things like, Health Insurance, Bills, Checks, and other responsibilities that come with college and I feel like I have no idea how to do those things.
***Ditto on both Marshall's ideas about doing a piece on the Janitors and the BLACK HOLE***
1. Techies: just what goes into making a music or theater production (lights, sound, etc.) and how many people are backstage making it all happen? How much of a time commitment is a tech job? Are there certain people who are know for their "tech expertise" or love/always do tech? Interviews: people who have done tech (and like to do it), theater and music teachers
2. Extracurriculars: how much time outside of school do people spend on different extracurriculars (ex. sports, volunteering, plays, dance, clubs, etc). How does this affect homework/school? What are some cool extracurriculars that people are really passionate about?
3. MA's hidden talents: I think it would be really cool to do a short piece about different people (students and teachers) with hidden/fun/interesting talents. I'm not sure how we would find people with hidden talents (because they're hidden) but we could ask around and it might make for a really interesting article
4. Procrastination: I think an article about procrastination would be really cool. It would be interesting to see how many people at MA procrastinate, list the best ways to avoid procrastination, etc. Interviews with students who procrastinate (how do they fill up their time?) vs. students who dont (what tips do they have?). Also possibly interviews with teachers
5. Ways to stay active in winter: because the school only offers basketball as a sport in the winter, the majority of students aren't in any sports in the winter. There could be an interview with the trainer on ways for athletes to stay fit/ fun winter-specific ways to exercise
I agree that there should be a poetry slam feature
Jamie:
Sports/Feature:
Now that the majority of fall sports have been completed, I think it would be really cool to put together a piece showing the craziest / most intense pictures from this past season. This photos could be put into the polaroid like template that Max made for last edition's old sports photos
Feature/News:
This has already been mentioned a few times but I really like the idea. Driver's licenses and MA. When do people get theirs? Do most students plan on driving a carpool?Does anyone wait their full year before driving other kids? All of these would be interesting questions to ask the students who drive or are planning on driving.
Feature:
I think a cool article could be about the places people go over spring break. A cool twist would be to focus on the weather in the places people are vacationing in. I know tons of students go up to Tahoe or some other area with snow, but how many people seek warmth and head southward?
Sports:
MA doesn't have a football team, and this has become a little bit of a joke (the undefeated t-shirts, etc). How many people would actually play football if it was offered? I know there are some leagues that only require 8 players, as opposed to 9. Would we be able to join such a league? If so, who would be our competition? Interviews: Josh Frechette and student body
Feature/Opinion:
I like Lauren's procrastination article, especially since I can really relate. I think we could do a survey about the average time people spend on Facebook, watching tv, and other forms of procrastination. This could be turned into a really cool ASF, and we could maybe combine this with the sleeping article that's been suggested.
Article Ideas
Sports: Ma has had a dramatic increase in success of its sports over the past couple of years. Especially this year have the teams done remarkably well. I think we should look into this and what has changed.
Sports: There has been a new addition to the basketball team as of last year and i think we should go into depth on that and how other teams and players feel about this third team. Additionally we should look at and interview the new freshman coach and assistant varsity coach named James Baker
Features: Ma which was once known for its wackiness and uniqueness is now losing that individuality. What is causing MA to transform into a "normal" school and lose its whacky touch.
Sports: This is going to sound repetative, but we have a new girls basketball program. We should try and get in touch with the new girls basketball coach and what his goals are for this upcoming season. Additionally we should find out how he feels about MA and what he will do to make this season a great one.
1. Sports: I think that there should be an article about the little publicized, alternative sport: Rock Climbing. I know some people have troubles playing sports at MA, so this article could inspire them to not give up their hopes of achieving greatness! Must interviews: Jonah N, Carson T, and other rock-climbers.
2. Feature: What happened to our famous open forum??? I am pretty sure it was taken out this year, and we should definitely interview joe harvey and lynn hansen to find out why. This would be an important article because I know a lot of students are angry and frustrated about it.
3. Feature: Last newspaper there was an article about baby wildcats, so I think we should write an article about teachers' kids currently attending the school. How do they feel as a child to a faculty at MA? Must interviews: Andrew S, Cecilia, and more...
4. Feature: An article about any organizations or clubs MA students participate outside of MA. This will give students at MA who are not necessarily attracted to the clubs at our school to branch out and find something they enjoy elsewhere. Since we talk about MA clubs so much, why not broaden our horizon to the rest of our community?
5. A&E: About why the MA english teachers assign us different books, such in junior year, the Awakening and the Scarlet Letter? Why is this beneficial and why is inconvenient for the students? Why don't the English teacher make i easier, such as in freshman year by assigning everyone the Odyssey? Must interviews: all english teachers
Opinion Piece: The Environmental Issue
I've been wanting to do this for a while, and I think that it would be a different perspective on the Environmental issue. I feel like the Environmental issue is a "rich person's issue". It is difficult to participate when you are not wealthy, and the school shoves the issue in the face of its students way too often. No interviews and it would interest everyone.
Sports/Features : Profile on Michael Coffino
Ive suggested this before, but I think its a good article. A profile on the head coach of varsity boys basketball, Michael Coffino. He is pretty interesting because he is a lawyer and the coach, and also has a brother who coaches in the NBA. Interviews: Michael Coffino Interest: Everyone who knows him, and everyone whos ever wondered who he is.
Sports: Profile on the new head coach of girls varsity basketball. There is a new coach in town, and nobody knows who he is. Maybe we can talk to Josh as to why he was hired, and we can talk to the coach himself. Interviews: Josh, Coach mysterious. Interest: Everyone
Sports: Girls Basketball and the lack of support
There was about 12 girls at girls basketball tryouts, compared to about 20 something in years past. Why the decline? Interviews: Players, Josh, Coaches, former players Interest: anyone interested in girls basketball
Feautures: A piece on staff who do a lot but the school may not be familiar with them. We can talk to Mike Joyce, Mary Lou, and others who do alot for the school, but get little recognition from the students. Interviews: Mike Joyce, Mary Lou, students, and other staff. Intersts: anyone and everyone
News: I like Eric's idea of investigating the lack of open forum this year. What specifically made them draw the line about cutting it out? Has the poetry slam replaced it in a way?
Sports: I agree with everyone who wrote about the new girls basketball coach. Also it is interesting that the boys have 3 full teams when the girls can barely make 1. Why is this?
Features: Event Calendar
I think it would be good to have another events timeline especially since this will be coming out right after break and people will need to know what's going on.
A&E: Top 10 Music, Movies, etc. of 2009
This could be specifically from the MA community or in general, but it would be cool if we polled people about their favorite music, movies, and other things from the year.
Feature:
I really like Marshall's idea about the janitorial staff. Also, since we are such a "green" school we could investigate what they use to clean.
