Article Idea:
Must interviews:
Why will people want to read this:
This is a place for the staff of the MA Voice to engage in on-line discussion about issues relating to and inspiring good writing, reading and journalism.
Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.
Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

Article Idea: Halloween article
I’m not exactly sure when the second issue will be published, but if it’s before Halloween, the article could cover costume ideas, opinions on how old is too old to trick-or-treat, etc. If it is published after Halloween, then the article could cover best dressed, etc, a recap of Halloween activities, etc.
Must interviews: Everyone, include people from every grade.
Why people will want to read it: Fun, light article that would allow for eye-catching graphics.
Article Idea: Last Wednesday we had a revised schedule that allowed for a much earlier dismissal. Are students willing to endure 4 straight hours of classes in order to for a 12 PM release? Is it even a plausible proposal?
Who to talk to: Lynn Hansen, Travis, MA students, teachers (their opinions on teaching 3 continuous blocks)
Why people will want to read this: A lot of people were talking about how they preferred the shortened day, yet is it realistic to be able to focus for 4 hours straight every other day? Pros and cons
Article Idea: Compilation of best lines from senior speeches…Some pretty powerful and insightful words are spoken during senior speeches, so as a way to recap the speeches as well as recognize the speaker’s intellect, we could include quotes within the paper. Either as a way to fill space, or we could actually make it into an article, though I’m not exactly how that would work out.
Must Interviews: Seniors who have made their senior speeches
Article Idea: There has been a recent outbreak /return of bed bugs...What are bed bugs all about and what else we need to protect ourselves from?/theme of teen health:
This is a bit of a vague suggestion, but the idea could hone in on bed bugs, teen health, etc. Could also umbrella tanning, hygiene, hours of sleep (taunting addition to our planners, etc.)
Must interviews: Possibly the science department, teachers, student body, etc.
Why people will want to read it: Will relate to everyone health-wise.
Article Idea: What California rejecting the bill to ban plastic bags means. How will the student’s efforts change who participated in teens turning green?
Must interviews: I’m not exactly sure who participated in Teens Turning Green, but we could definitely start with Eco Council, Mark Stefanski, etc.
Why people will want to read this: MA is a very “eco-friendly” school, so this article will appeal to those in the community who identify themselves with being green. Additionally, many members of the MA community actively fought to ban plastic bags, so it will be interesting to see their response to the rejection.
Idea: Favorite book read in past 6 months
Interview: Various members of the MA community
Why: Everybody likes to read, this is a great way to get recommendations.
Idea: Thoughts on the year so far
Interview: Several students from each of the grades
Why: It would be interesting to compare how people feel after about a month of school
Idea: Most anticipated movie of fall/winter
Interview: Various members of the MA community
Why: It'll help people to become informed about upcoming movies
Idea: Interview some of the musicians
Interview: Several different musicians
Why: It might be interesting to see what they do outside of music
And I think I already suggested this one, but:
Idea: Best off-campus eateries
Interview: Various members of the MA community
Why: Good way to help local businesses, fun to learn about new places to eat
1. Article Idea: How to support MA sports
Must interviews: spirit captains, people on sports teams, frequent fans!
Why will people want to read this: a lot of the times teams complain that there are not enough fans or enough spirit and support at games, so this is a way to inform everyone how to become better supporters and fans of our school sports!
2. Article Idea: Circle parties; inclusive or exclusive?
Must interviews: students from each grade
Why will people want to read this: Circle parties look really fun, but they can be awkward for underclassman or for people who don't feel comfortable attending. This article could be a way to come up with ideas for more people to feel more included in circle parties.
3. Article Idea: Technology's affect on school work (specifically cell phones and computers); the pros and the cons.
Must interviews: tech people at MA, students with opinions, teachers with opinions.
Why will people want to read this: I think that the affect of technology on school work is a huge debate because there are a lot of different pros and cons that don't clearly state that technology is good or bad. As students in these modern times, we are surrounded my technology that is constantly growing, so it is interesting to see if people think the technology is more helpful than it is distracting of visa versa.
4. Article Idea: Remaining Green; keeping the campus clean
Must interviews: students in eco-council, maintenance crew
Why will people want to read this: MA is known for how green we are and how pro active we are, but i find that we don't represent ourselves that well by leaving trash around the campus. It is easy to forget that not only do we need to focus on cleaning up beaches and areas around us, but also the place where we go to school and spend the majority of our day at.
5. Article Idea: Sleep; MA's steps in helping students get more sleep
Must interviews: travis, teachers, learning specialists
Why will people want to read this: There has been such a big stress on getting more sleep this year for MA students, but what is really being done about it? Yes, we have places in our planner to track how much sleep we are getting, however, is there going to be specific things that the school does this year to help ensure that we will/are getting enough sleep? I think a lot of students would be curious to know!
YES ILANA I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE ARTICLE ABOUT HALF DAYS!!!
Article Idea: "Wildcat Quest"
Must Interviews: MAPA and anyone else that knows about the quest
Why people will read it: In the past months it has been mentioned a few times. My fellow students and I have no idea whatsoever about what it involves and what it is about. Therefore, we should publish an article formally describing the Wildcat Quest.
Article Idea: Major League Baseball 2010 Playoff preview
Must Interviews: Marry, Bill, Dave, all other MA faculty that follow baseball, and students
Why will people want to read this: The playoffs are approaching and I think it will be cool to create some playoff predictions. Obviously the Yankees will win the world series this year, but we should still predict who will lose to them.
Article Idea: Marin Academy's athletic records
Must Interviews: Josh, MA coaches, faculty, students
Why Will people want to read this: After hearing that Mason scored four goals in MA victory over Marin Catholic, I wondered if this is the most a male has ever scored in a single season game for MA. Students like numbers and various records, therefore we should publish some important ones for our community to show appreciation and dedication to MA athletics.
Article Idea: An article about the upcoming MA spirit days
Must interviews: Spirit Captains, Senate, and Lynn
Why Will people want to read this: To get students excited and more prepared for the upcoming spirit days. I think this will bring more participation if students can plan their costumes throughout the year.
Article Idea: A calendar (like Riley did last year) highlighting important dates and events of the upcoming months
Must interviews: Lynn and others that know about upcoming dates
Why will people want to read this: Last year it was a success and if we continue the trend this year, our newspaper will become even more well established. Even though all students have a planner not everyone looks ahead in the up and coming months, so we might as well help them out by publishing it in our newspaper.

Article Idea: Underclassmen and Upperclassman comparisins
I was thinking that we could have an article on underclassmen that eiether because of their looks or their personality are similar to upperclassmen and because of this are given a specefic upperclassmen name put next to theirs.
Must Interviews: Students
Why people would be interested: Fun article that all grades could find interesting.
Article Idea: Homework Survey
Interview students and teachers from all grades and compare the amount of homework that is given out in each grade.
Must Interviews: Students and Teachers
Why article would be interesting: It is regarding a topic that is often spoken upon.
Article Idea: Favorite Sports Team Poll
Take a poll on the teams in which the MA students enjoy watching the most
Must Interviews: Students
Interesting: Although simple this would be an interesting survey to take.
Article Idea:Is MA really as Green as we say we are?
An article researching and commentating on the truth behind the fameous steryotype of MA being a tremendously green campus. Although it might seem this way are we really sure that it is true? By conducting some research we could find stats that would eiether support or go against the well known belief.
Must interviews: administration, students, faculty and electric people/ information
Interesting: This is an article that would dwelve into a subject that has never been tested here at MA
Article Idea: Senior Favorite Moments
Article on the Seniors favorite moments here at MA throughout there 4 years.
Must interview: Seniors possibly teachers
Interesting: A funny article that is a unique way of having the seniors look back at there time here at MA
Article idea: Spirit Dance
Interviews: Spirit Captains, variety of MA students from each grade
Why: Fun article, get people excited for dance and encourage everyone to show spirit. It could also be similar to last years Spirit Dance article and discuss why the attendance of the underclassmen is so much higher than the upperclassmen.
Article Idea: Fall Play, Musical
Interviews: Annie Elias, cast of the play
Why: Preview the upcoming play and discuss the fact that its a musical. The article could ask why MA hasn't put on a musical in years and if more people are likely to go.
Article Idea: Stereotypes of MA and its students
Interviews: faculty and students (older students preferred)
Why: Our family friend is getting ready to apply to MA soon and I found it interesting all of the types of things he had heard about it. He kept saying that he had heard that it was a "druggy hippy" school. This article could talk to faculty and students about different stereotypes and whether there is some truth in some of them. It would be interesting to see how our school is portrayed and explore the reasons why.
Article Idea: Interview students about what they think is the United States biggest issue right now
Interviews: variety of students
Why: It would be interesting to see what people's biggest concerns are for our country. We hear about different issues facing America, but what do the MA students think the biggest issue is and why? I think reading about national news from a student or peers perspective is much easier than reading it from the New York Times.
Article Idea: Interview freshman about their experience so far at MA
Must interviews: freshman
Why: This article would be a chance to see what people's first impression of our school is.
1. Fall fashion
I really liked this article last year! The idea is simple: just interviews of fashion-forward students. We could compare trends between grades, or do a reflection on past trends.
Must interviews: students from all grades
Why people will want to read it: MA's a fashion-forward place
2. Arts reviews/previews
Reviews/previews of recent/soon-to-be-released books, movies, albums, new bands, etc.
Must interviews: students
Why people will want to read it: Everyone loves finding a new favorite
3. Electives/extracurriculars
How do electives and extracurriculars affect MA students' social standing? What does it mean to be a theater kid? A lax bro? Some MA students will claim that we don't have "cliques," or at least that "we're not as cliquey as public schools," but I'm not sure how true that is.
Must interviews: students from all grades, faculty, hum dev teachers
Why people will want to read this: It's an issue that affects everyone, but isn't a popular topic of conversation
4. Competition
Does competition (academic or other) between peers motivate students or add an unnecessary level of stress?
Must interviews: Students, faculty, hum dev teachers
Why people will want to read this: Again, something that affects everyone but isn't widely discussed
5. Playlists
Very general...playlists, maybe by genre, by "party songs," "driving songs," "pump-up songs," etc, or by specific music-loving students.
Must interviews: students
Why people will want to read this: similar to #2 ...finding new favorite songs
I really liked Ilana's senior speech idea, but we haven't had many yet. Maybe we could do this in a later edition?
1. What to do in the Bay Area
The way I envision the format of this piece would be less of a structured article and more of along the line of a fun graphic. We could interview several students on interesting/obscure places to go in the Bay Area to have fun and construct a map that displays each place, with a quote to accompany it. These places could include things like crazy restaurants, climbing gyms, beaches etc…
Why: Because doing the same thing every weekend gets boring!
People to interview: Any student.
2. Sports Fans at MA
This is similar to Matt’s idea but we could focus this article more around Bay Area sports teams such as the Giants and 49ers to name a few. A large majority of the MA community seems to demonstrate some Bay Area pride with the sports team of their choice and through the interviews we could determine why they choose to flaunt their love of the specific sport, whether it be football, baseball etc.
Why: Because sports seem to be one thing at MA that almost everyone can enjoy, whether it be playing or watching.
People to interview: Any bay area sports fan, teacher or student.
3. Catching up with the class of 2010
Now that most colleges have begun classes, it would be a good time to take a glimpse at what college life has been like so far for recent MA grads. Whether students are participating in rush, athletics, or just familiarizing themselves with a new town it would be interesting to see how they are handling the change.
Why: They were a big part of our school for four years, and it could be a fun article composed of embarrassing stories and interesting events that have happened so far for them in college.
People to Interview: Any class of 2010 alum who is currently attending college.
4. Spirit Captains
Every year it is the spirit captains duty to maintain a large presence on campus and enforce spirit throughout the school. We could do a comical interview with Hunter and Carson on what their views are on MA spirit and their ideas for upcoming spirit events.
Why: Because everyone always loves the spirit captains.
People to Interview: Hunter and Carson…
5. Freshmen First Impressions
Similar to Claire’s idea, but I really do think that the freshmen need more representation as a class in The Voice. We could see what they were intimidated by, what they are most excited for, and how they think their class is coming together as a whole.
Why: Because the freshmen need representation and it is always fun to hear what thy have to say about our school so far.
People to Interview: Any willing freshmen with interesting insights and funny stories.

1. A copy of the voice for prospective students
As a shadow, I remember being 100% bored while waiting around for my host during their classes, snack, etc. Maybe we could do a little issue for prospective students that gives them a taste of MA: sort of like the freshman issue this year. I think it will keep them occupied, informed, AND interested in MA!
Must interviews: Notable students, faculty, etc.
2. Activities fair
A general overview of what the clubs have to offer this year, how the activities fair went, and maybe some interviews of people who attended it.
Must interviews: Club Leaders, freshman in attendance, and any other students who went
3. "Lost" emails
Last year, I sent one all-school email regarding a lost envelope and one for just freshman about my lost Odyssey book. I know everyone gets about 2 of these a day, but a) are they effective? b) do most kids just immediately delete these emails? and c) on average, how many of these are sent in one school year? This could take the form of a survey or statistics, or even a deeper look at the "lost" emails annoying and seemingly pointless qualities.
Must Interview: Some of the people who have sent them recently, any MA students, or teachers!
4. Review of fall tv shows' season openings
We could talk to students, and see what their favorite fall tv shows are, and what they thought about the season opening. A poll could be used for each show's popularity, compared to the students' opinion on them at the end of the season last year.
Must interviews: MA students
5. Old yearbook pictures of our teachers from when they were our age!
I think this would be a really funny, lighthearted article that everyone would love!
Must interviews: Any teachers!
idea: Halloween
basically the same as Illana's, but also maybe get an idea of what the spirit captains have planned for this year's spirit week.
interview: students, spirit captains
why: fun article that will get people into the Halloween mood
idea: Sports update
Check in with the fall sports teams and see how they are doing in the league, what their record is, etc.
interview: Coaches and athletes
why: other than going to the games or asking a friend, sometimes it's hard to follow a team. This would lay out all the sports teams and how they are doing for people to easily see.
idea: action opportunities
Find out about different opportunities for students to get involved in the community. This doesn't have to be limited to MA, too, so we could present opportunities for our student body to take action outside of the school, too.
interview: students that know of organizations to get involved with, any teachers that may know of something of that sort, or pretty much anyone else.
why: to make it easier for students to get involved so they don't have to go off and track down an organization they want to get involved with.
idea: upcoming concerts/play
talk to the theater and music teachers to find out when the concerts and play are going to be, what type of music the concerts will be, and what the play will be about
interview: music/ theater teachers
why: inform the students of when the concerts or plays will be
idea: opinions on Ma'at's silence
see what students and Derek and Trevor think about Ma'at being turned off, and if the noise level has dramatically gone up, down, or stayed the same.
interview: students, Derek, Trevor
why: it will be interesting to see what people think about Ma'at taking a break, and if they think it has affected the noise level.
Article Idea: Looking at spirit captains through the years. I think it would be fun to show all of the different spirit captains MA has had so far and then a big center article on this year's spirit captains.
Must interviews: Hunter & Carson
Why people will want to read this: I think people will like comparing the crazy costumes past spirit captains have dressed up in especially for years before they were at MA.
Article Idea: "Fac. Brats"
Lauren Hansen has referred to the children of faculty as "fac brats"
This article would include photos and interviews of children of faculty and will have quotations of what it is like to see your parent around the school and possible perks of being a child of a faculty member. The parent's opposing perspective could also be funny to see.
Must interviews: children of faculty and their parents.
Why people will want to read this? I think it would be fun to get an insight into the perks and effects of having a parent working at the school.
Article Idea:Concerts at MA
We could interview various members of the music community about what it is like to be in a concert at MA. We could also interview other students about their experiencing attending these concerts.
Must Interviews: Bob, Music Students, Concert goers.
Why people will want to read this: This article could influence younger students or those who have just never attended a concert and educate the MA community from the perspective of those on stage.
Article Idea:Freshman siblings:
I think introducing some new freshman siblings of older MA students or grads would be a fun article for the MA Voice! We could have pictures of new freshman and their siblings and have the reader guess which siblings match. The new freshman could also say a quote about what it is like to come to MA and live up to their siblings reputations or legends.
Must interviews: Avery Mcdowell, Amory Mowrey etc
Why people will want to read this? Sometimes when I hear that a new freshman is a sibling to someone else at MA I am shocked! I think it would introduce and educate the community about who the new freshman are as well as be a fun read.
Article Ideas: Favorite current television series. We could take a poll on MA's new favorite shows and see what people are watching. We could interview students who are avid about the new shows and include pictures from the show.
Must interviews: Students from each grade who are avid about certain Television shows.
Why people will want to read this? I always love finding new shows and I think it would be informative to find out the popular new shows of the season.
Idea: NFL teams, interview students and perhaps a few teachers on campus about their football teams they follow and get their comments about them.
People to interview: anyone who follows football
Idea: Community's thoughts on new American Idol judges, with the loss of Simon many people are torn but will the new judges not be as worse as people may have first thought?
Idea: How do people stay in shape while not playing sports. What do people do before after or during school to stay in shape while not playing sports?
People to interview: Dylan Conklin
Idea: similar to best lines from senior speeches, the senior speeches that students felt had the most impact.
Interview: anyone
Idea: New 2010 fashion. What are the new fashion trends people have brought from summer back to school. People love to see articles on fashion, and anyone can model
1. Article Idea: the growing obsession of ping-pong in the MA community
Must Interview: those who are most frequently at the table (ie- Adam Brune, Adrew Hove, etc.)
Why: Many people hang out around the table and it has become a center figure on the campus
2. Idea: An exposé on Travis' twins!
Must Interview: Travis and her partner
Why: Everybody loves saying hi to the twins in the morning, it's fun to read!
3. Idea: A look at the busy schedules of MA Seniors
Interview: a few seniors with busy agendas and maybe a college counselor- one of the Jennifer
why: a lot of seniors can relate and all seniors would love it if they were talked about in the paper
4. Idea: An article about the revival of the MA picnic association
Interviews: Tennessee Mowrey, Gabe Beudoin, Julia Chanin, other avid members of picnic association
Why: Because Ten, the creator of the association, graduated last year no one really knows if the picnics will continue. The "Remember September" Day was a great event that represented MA's spirit but people may want to know if it will continue throughout the year.
5. Idea: Freshmen dominance in sports
Interviews: different freshmen on varsity teams
Why: it is always interesting to read about sports and because freshmen are so competitive this year, the rest of the school would be interested to know who's a threat in the athletics program.
1.) "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
I know that the "don't ask, don't tell" policy is under a lot of scrutiny, and it's a very relevant issue for the MA community.
Interview: Gay-Straight Alliance members, students with differing opinions, soldiers? (i don't know how we'd get that one)
It'll be informative and it's a very important issue. There is a lot of controversy and many students have an opinion.
2.) adding on to Ilana's: Halloween!
Costume ideas/best costumes. maybe a little history, and some things to do on/about halloween.
Interview: students. it's a big holiday, this shouldn't be an issue.
Why: Halloween is fun. Costume ideas are helpful/fun to read and a best costume contest would be excellent. It's just generally a great holiday with lots of potential.
3.) High Standards Of Beauty
The standards of beauty at MA are sky-high. Appearances matter and become an issue/source of pressure. Do students feel like beauty standards are unattainable?
Interview: students with differing opinions, maybe Charis and/or Sanjai
Why: high school is definitly a time when students worry about appearances and beauty. It's an added pressure that can become a big issue. I think a lot of students could relate to this.
4.) Fall Fashion (already been said by Julia, I know): i think this is a great idea, so I'm just backing up the others who suggested it. I think it would be great to do it as a more candid, street style thing instead of having people model specific looks, just taking pictures of random students (w/ permission!) with a good look for the day
5.) Get To Know Student Leaders
just a little bit about our student leaders...introducing them (for freshman) and telling the community a little more about them
Interviews: President (Zia), VP (Christie), Spirit Captains..etc., maybe class reps for each class?
Why: information! it'd be nice to know a little more about the students representing and leading MA
Idea: (Similar to Ella Storeys sleep idea) The contradiction between teachers wanting their students to be engaged and energized in class (get lots of sleep), while also assigning amounts of homework that require late night working.
Interviews: Students affected by sleep loss, teachers who give larger amounts of hw. maybe travis or other leading figures of the school (on what they side with: more hw or more sleep)
Significance: there have been lots of talks about sleep given to the student body, but teachers also assign insane amounts of homework on some nights. MA hasn't really picked between sleep and hw yet.
Idea: High school cliques. At MA there are many different friend groups that can be seen, maybe more or maybe less than the average public school. Are they positive or negative? Are they avoidable, or should they just be accepted as part of high school?
Interviews: various students, teachers
Significance: Cliques are very present at MA and it is often questioned whether they are bad or good.
Idea: Our daily schedule (like llana's) Kids are always proposing new ideas about what our schedule should be, between starting late or ending early or having a shorter lunch, and the article could be about why our schedule is what it is and why its not changing.
Interviews: Sudents, lynn/travis/whoever is in charge of the schedule
Significance: people would be interested in this article because they would want to know what they could- or could not- do to change the schedule to their desired day.
Idea: the debate over whether doing something just to get into college is acceptable. For seniors the college application process is taking place, and for juniors its in the back of everyone's mind. The article could address the issue and display the opinions of various people at MA.
Interviews: Students, college counselors
Significance: It is a controversial topic and there are many different stands that people take on it.
Idea: MA cafeteria: what people would like to see. The article could cover different cafeteria modifications that people think would be a good idea, such as a sandwich bar, a menu chosen by the students, a cheaper lunch option, ect.
Interviews: Cafe cooks, students
Significance: most people eat in the cafeteria and it would be interesting to give the students/teachers more of a say in what they are buying for lunch every day.
Article Idea: Profile on the custodians, Mickey and Alejandro, quick fun facts about who they are
Interviews: Mickey, Alejandro
Why: I got a request for this article a few days ago from a student who said "they are just so under appreciated and do so much!" It would introduce them to the community and make them more notable on campus
Article Idea: For Seniors: Tips for Surviving the College Process. A quick article on how past seniors handled the application process, how current seniors are coping
Interviews: Class of 2010, current seniors, college counselors
Why: Seniors are stressed... this is a way to let them know other people are feeling this way and what can be done to help!
Article Idea; "Overheard"- a quick blurb of funny (anonymous?) quotes about anything overheard this month
Interview: Everyone on journalism should just keep their ears open, and write down funny things they hear
Why: People love to hear what other people are saying and it could provide a good laugh!
Article Idea: Homework. Exploring why homework is given, how necessary it is, and how it impacts students lives. It could reveal what No Homework Weekend was like, how people spent their time, and how students lives would be different without homework. Is it possible to go without it?
Interviews: Teachers (ones that give a lot and ones that give a little), students with different opinions, Joe Harvey
Why: Homework controls a lot of life outside the classroom and contributes to a lot of stress. People would love to see it go and would love to read an article on it!
Article Idea: Parking Tickets: What’s the Deal with 5th Avenue
Interviews: People who park on 5th Ave, teachers, students
Why: Many people feel that the police department has been targeting this area at certain times because they know people will not have time to move their cars between classes. Is this true?
Oh and another quick idea: perhaps an article (or at least something) about the terrible car crash that happened in Novato? Interviews of kids who have friends at Novato High? It could go into an examination of seatbelts, teenage drunk driving, the whole "year" thing with your license, etc.

Article Idea: Upcoming School Dances
Must Interviews: Student Council
Why People Will Want to Read This: MA students love attending the school dances. To get a preview would be good not only for the freshman, but for all grades.
Article Idea: MA Shopping
Must Interviews: Fashionable students
Why People Will Want to Read This: Students like to know where the best/hippest shopping is around campus. People would be curious to see other's thoughts on the best places to shop.
Article Idea: Economic Downturn: How it's affecting students on campus.
Must Interviews: Any students who feel they are affected and are willing to share.
Why People Will Want to Read this: Other students would be intrigued to hear peoples' stories on how they are dealing with the economy. Have they bought less? Do they feel guilty? Are they worried about college? etc.
From Lena
1.Get to know the freshmen So far in the year, I feel as though I don't know the freshmen well. I
know a few individuals but I've also heard other grades talk about how
"unknown" the freshman class has been. I think an easy piece with general
statistics, stand-out sport freshmen, and various quotes from diverse
freshmen would be make us feel like we know them a little better.
Must Interviews: Freshmen
Why people will want to read this: We all want to feel comfortable in the
community and we want everyone else to feel this way as well. This would
be an easy get-to-know for the class.
2.Spirit Week
There are a lot of ideas on the Spirit Captains, but I think Spirit Week
should definitely find its way into our paper this month. It's the week of
October 25th, and it will surely be a week of fun and silliness for the MA
community. It could be a preview of the Spirit Days, faculty, and student
opinions on the week. If the issue is coming out afterwards, it could be a
round-up of the week's best dress-ups, best days, and most embarrassing
assembly moments.
Must Interviews: Student and faculty, and definitely Hunter and Carson
Why: These are always fun reads. Many people read them to see if they made
it in the paper, to see what's going to happen, or to reflect on the fun
past week.
3.Sports injuries
Inspired by my recent devastating injury, I think we should address the
growing injury rate at MA. At my physical therapy clinic they have
mentioned how it seems we have an epidemic of knee injuries for girls
going on right now. There are other injuries, such as concussions, that
have been frequented at MA as well.
Must Interviews: Players that have been injured, other players, coaches,
faculty (Travis), and other community members
Why: It is something that is relatable for me, but for a lot of other
people as well. I never knew how difficult it would be not to be able to
do something I truly love. An article that helps give voice to the people
that want to prevent other players from getting similar injuries would be
helpful and intriguing.
4.Self image and eating disorders
Looking good and feeling confident is a big part of high school. Girls, as
well as boys, want to look their best at school. For some people, this
means eating less and exercising more. This year I came back to school and
noticed that many of my friends had stopped eating actual food at lunch,
that upperclassmen looked drastically skinnier than last year, and that
boys were showing off their newly acquired muscles. I think self image is
a huge part of high school. It's not a very easy topic to talk about and
might make some students feel uncomfortable, but I think we should stretch
our boundaries and do something daring.
Must Interviews: Students, people that are willing to talk about self
image, and faculty, especially Charis and Sanjai
Why: It would be one of those articles that someone would be embarrassed
about really being interested in reading, but would read it alone anyway.
That's what we want to do: inspire people to learn more by reading our
articles. Depending on how deep we go into it, I think this piece has
potential to be a very strong piece.
5.Study habits
Sort of related to the homework article ideas other people have posted, I
think an article showing the spectrum of how much homework and studying
people do would be interesting. It's not limited to homework, though; this
article could explore SAT prep and outside tutoring. There are so many
different styles for doing homework at MA, and I think including specific
people's habits would be interesting and fun to read.
Must Interviews: Students
Why: At a school like MA, it is no question students are bogged down with
work. But the ways in which students deal with this work, put in extra
time, or do as little as possible, is what is truly interesting. This
wouldn't have to delve into too much of the stress of the work; simply
outlining different ways people handle schoolwork.
