This is a place for the staff of the MA Voice to engage in on-line discussion about issues relating to and inspiring good writing, reading and journalism.
Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.
Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

Edition 2: Editor goals
Please post three goals you have for your section. Reflect on the last edition of last year, areas where you have the most to improve and areas where you're doing great work. These goals can be design related, deadline related, or anything else. BUT, make sure these are measurable, outcome goals.

1) Make sure everything is legible (more transparency in picture if there is text over it)
2) Make sure everything is in accordance with AP Style
3) Have a vision of each page before I start designing
4) Have all graphics line up with and compliment the articles
1) Finish my pages on time, the way I want them to look
2) Amazing graphics
3)Good headlines
1.) Line up the pieces in a different way for a more unique feel (side-by-side, like you suggested).
2.) Once again, make sure there are no glaring errors in my section, because I can't believe I missed the caption error.
3.) Continue helping people learn to be more independent when laying out their section.
1. Split the edition with Katie so I read the first half and Katie reads the second half before the paper's printed
2. Have interesting and good graphics for the center spread/ staff-ed
3. Make sure pages and photos are light enough because I learned from last edition that everything prints a lot darker that it looks on the computer screen
1. Not being afraid to take the lead:
I think one thing I lacked last issue was having a backbone. For this issue, I would really like to be able to make tough decisions based on what I think is right, rather than the majority of the staff.
2. Not having crazy expectations:
One thing I need to work on (this issue also manifests itself in other classes) is having these unmeetable expectations. While laying out this issue, I'd like to work on staying calm and collected. Stressing about making pages pefect is so much less-productive than just working with realistic expectations.
3. Keeping pages balanced:
Last issue I think I did a really good job of keeping my pages balanced - the seem to compliment each other very well when put together. I'd really like to keep this up,
*4.* I agree with Marshall about having a vision of each page before designing them. If accomplished, this will save me a lot of time, energy, and stress.
1. Keep the details. I want to continue to have good alignment, proper picas, and this time, make sure all of the text is in the right format.
2. Creativity and color. I think I have a good set of articles to go outside the box and add some elements of color and style to the pages. For example, for the page with the Eco-Council articles, a green wash over the page would look awesome.
3. Edit final drafts. Last time we were lacking some key details on the new teachers at the final draft time. I want to catch these mistakes right away and put the staff back to work if they miss anything. Also in this effort, I am planning on asking the writers to send me their articles by Wednesday night, if possible, so I can look through them before layout.
1. Read every article from the center spread and later. (Lauren will be editing the beginning) No spelling errors!
2. Design a graphic for the center spread that is both legal and interesting. I want it to be provocative for a purpose, not just to get attention.
3. I want to continue to work productively with Lauren and Riley!

1: Keep up good variation between graphics. Some photos, some black and white, some drawings etc.
2: Alignment. Use more guides and rulers to ensure that graphics are perfectly centered or even. There were some errors in the OCT 1 issue.
3: Make sure text laid out upon graphics is readable. Change the brightness or opacity if necessary.
