Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.

Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

Article Idea: Conference on Democracy: favoring one side of the arguement in the presentations. Last year I remember that the democratic side of arguements were always favored, and sometimes the republican side was even 'booo'd of stage. Are we really that open to different opinions? The article could adress the validity behind MA's openness towards different ideas such as those that are republican.
Interviews: Leaders of CoD, Travis, Lyne
Reason: The COD is occurring right now, so the topic is very relevant.

Article: Hypocracy behind technology at MA: smart boards. We always want more of them and love the idea of having them, but teachers don't really use them that much. The article could discuss whether technology is really necessary to enhance the education experience at MA.
Interviews: Brad, teachers w/ smart boards, Travis
Reason: a lot of tuition money goes to new technology, so the article would be of interest to everyone.

Interviews: Students and teachers (not really anyone in particular)
Reason: I've heard a lot of people talking about this in some way, so I'm sure it would be of interest.

Almost out of know where Ping Pong has become a big hit for students with time to spare during lunch. The ping pong tournament just ended and it drew a lot of attention. Article Idea: Teen sexuality and it's role at MA
Recently there has been an extreme amount of press surrounding the daily struggles that gay and bisexual teens face throughout America. Although MA is thought of as a liberal community free of prejudice, we could dig deeper into how true this statement actually is and how people feel this is demonstrated at school in terms of different sexual orientations. Also, if you think about it, how many students at MA are actually openly gay?
Must Interviews: Sanjai, Joani, Charis, various students within each grade.
Why will people want to read this?: Homosexuality has always been a controversial topic -- people like controversy. It is also a very relevant issue today even outside of the MA community.

Article Idea: Free Blocks
You would be surprised to find how many seniors at MA have at least 2 or 3 free blocks, whether it be because they feel they are too stressed or because they have already committed to a college. It would be interesting to see how teachers feel about this and whether or not they think it defeats the whole purpose of actually going to school. Also, parents are paying thousands and thousands of dollars to send their kids to MA… but is there money going to waste if their kids are spending the better part of their days sitting in the library watching youtube videos and getting virtually nothing done?
Must Interviews: Joe Harvey, students who have more than 1 free block (Savannah Leaf, Eric Johanson… etc.), any teacher.
Why will people want to read this?: This involves the whole student body in one way or another and I personally have been wondering what percent of the school has more than one free block.

Article Idea: Assemblies
Recently I have noticed that assemblies have turned into a time for senior speeches… and that’s about it. Rarely do we have enough time for announcements (or anything else for that matter) and the bulletin seems to be the only way to notify people of anything anymore. What is going on?! What is the true purpose of assembly anymore?
Must Interviews: Travis, Zia, any student who feels irritated by the lacking assemblies.
Why will people want to read this?: Students should be excited about assembly! They will want to know why it is constantly the same routine!

Article Idea: PDA at MA
Everyone knows which couples like to flaunt their love throughout school, but what do people actually think of it? How much is too much and to what extent is it still school appropriate? We could interview students and teachers alike and determine the general consensus surrounding the role that PDA plays within the MA student body. Also, do teachers think it can be a distraction and effect MA as place of learning?
Must Interviews: Anyone who is in a relationship at school, any student or teacher who has witnessed some form of PDA.
Why will people want to read this?: It effects everyone, and it could also be argued that PDA in a school community is relatively controversial.

Article Idea: I REALLY like Matt’s idea on “MA” sayings.
There are definitely certain people at MA who have coined specific terms and spread their lingo throughout the whole student body (Slamo: “Creature”, Ruby: “Fomo”) and I think a fun and light hearted piece on what terms have recently become popular would be comical and enjoyed by everyone.
Must Interviews: Any student.
Why will people want to read this?: It would be funny!! We need some comedy.

Article Idea: I think it is extremely important to be emerged in the culture of the language you are studying to be able to improve your skills in that language. interview: Students and teachers
why: to find out what students and teachers think about it.

Idea: Racism at MA: Are we too PC?
interviews: human development leaders, students of all grades.
Why: This could be an extensive piece about how MArin Academy only scratches the surface when discussing race and racism. The need to remain PC has censored a lot of our "open" discussions and it will definitely play its part in the Conference on Democracy, just like it did in the last conference about prop 8. This is a serious issue that should be addressed, and I know from asking around that a lot of students are concerned about it.

Part one:

Article Idea: Fall/winter wear (similar to Charlotte's)
There is always an inevitable shift in attire when the clouds come out and rain starts pouring down. I think a spin on Charlotte's idea and Annie's is to compare what MA students are wearing to the fall runways. This could be more of a graphic-based piece with photo comparisons, but I think the idea has a lot of potential. It could be sort of fashion blog-esque, like Face Hunter or The Sartorialist- blogs are very in right now.
Must interviews: Students, faculty (whoever is writing could come to school several days with a camera and just take snapshots of good outfits)
Why people will want to read this: Graphic-heavy pieces are a good break to serious newsworthy topics. I think this piece would be fun and would attract a lot of attention (from mostly girls, but we would include mens fashion as well).

Article Idea: Technology-based center spread
Computers, iPods, cellphones, oh my! There are so many angles we could take on the ever-growing, ever-present issue of technology and the rule it has on us, the true "technology" generation. How has technology changed since we were little? How has it shaped us as people? How has it affected our communication skills? Computers and phones are even linked to starting cancer now. At MA, we have so many technological resources be it computers, Starboards, or the new screen in the gym. We could get statistics, like how much time is spent on computers vs. phones, etc. Also a must to discuss technology's role on students and the world as a whole.
Must interviews: Everyone and anyone
Why people will want to read this: It just makes so much sense in the 21st century. We are in a technological age, and I think as a paper we should address it. It's something that literally everyone can relate to and I'm sure we could spark good debate about the topic.

Article Idea: Meet the entire Senate
They briefly introduced themselves at assembly once I think, but I can barely remember who does what and even what the different roles of secretary, treasurer, etc. are. We could do little bios, sort of new teacher esque, and also an overview of what exactly Senate contributes to.
Must interviews: Senate members
Why people will want to read this: If other people agree with me, the two-second introductions at assembly just didn't do it for me. I've been at MA already for a year, and I'm not sure what they talk about every week and would like to know.

Part two:

Article Idea: Where does this "MA is gay" idea come from?
I have a lot of friends from other schools that have repeatedly called MA a "gay school." It's some sort of joke, or reputation, that MA has seemed to acquire. Where does this stereotype stem from? I think we should discuss this topic. What would be really interesting is if we got views from students from other schools. We could even make this a bigger issue and go into schools' perceptions of other schools and stereotypes Marin and SF high schools get (University being nerds, etc.).
Must interviews: MA community, other school is this is possible
Why people will want to read this: I think actually a lot of students and perhaps faculty would find this an interesting read. It's definitely something a lot of kids have heard being said about MA and I think it's overall a pretty interesting topic. We could even put some humor into it, because if we don't I think it could be taken a little too self-conscious of us. I just think it would be a new direction to go that we haven't.

Article Idea: Spotlight on the new bands
Last year we did something similar, and I think it's good to introduce the new bands this year. I know there are a lot of new talented freshmen we could highlight as well as new bands in rock, jazz, etc.
Must interviews: Bob Schleeter, music students
Why people will want to read this: We want to know who we're going to go see before we go to a concert! There is always some confusion before the first of the concerts and I think an article is a great way to get the word out about new bands.

Also, I agree with everyone that a Giants piece is essential! This is huge and I know there are a lot of MA fans.

1) Giving Thanks

What are we, as a community, thankful for? I'm thinking a heartwarming piece on what a great place MA is.

4) Bandwagon

Light-hearted article about all the newfound Giants spirit in the air. Maybe poking fun at new fans, and/or advice from diehards to n00bs who want to appear to know what they're talking about.

Interview: Everyone, and some true Giants-lovers

Read Because: It's a hot topic

5) Worst Fashion Choices

I'm sure even the most fashionable of our fashion-forward community have had some slip-ups. This could be a funny alternative to the usual fashion trend pieces. Teacher responses have some potential as well.
