Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.

Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

Edition 4 Article Ideas

Same rules as the last time. Publication date will be early December. Please keep that in mind when coming up with ideas.

Please post 6-7 ideas for the fourth edition of the year. You must have at least one article idea for each section (News, Sports, A&E, Features, Op/Ed, Center Spread). Be sure to read the other ideas BEFORE you post your own. You can elaborate on another person's post (with a citation, of course). Include an article idea for each section. Be specific and format each idea as such:
Article Idea: Must interviews (be specific ... "students" is fairly obvious and somewhat lame): Why will people want to read this:

News:
I think it would be interesting if we did a piece about Occupy Wall Street and how it has expanded into other countries and even SF!
Interviews could include: protesters or anyone you know who has a different point of view. People will really be interested since its right in our home.

Sports:
We can introduce the start of the winter sports.
interviews: students who are planning on playing winter sports. coaches

A&E:We can talk about the upcoming plays like the fall production.
Interviews: students who are in the play, crew, and producers.

Op/Ed: I read this piece in the New York Times. It was really interesting and after I researched a little more I figured out that different states have different regulations about owning exotic animals. Link:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/20/opinion/exotic-animals-as-pets-an-unregulated-risk.html?_r=1&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

I'm still thinking about the interviews.

center spread: I think it would be interesting to talk about autism and how doctors give medicine as a cure. Some people believe that the cure is just to get the kids outside more.
Interviews: doctors, parents or kids with autism

News:
Senior Speech Censorship
Inspired by the old mini-newspaper we read about senior page censorship and hearing about my friends' troubles with getting their speeches passed. I think people want to know why some senior speeches don't get passed. How many speeches don't get through? What are the most common reasons? What's the record for most number of speeches denied from one student? Do seniors feel there is too much censorship? Is MA too worried about being PC?
Interviews: Bill, Alex Rekkas, Elba Morales, Jim Baldwin (how speeches have changed over the years)

Center Spread:
MA's Neighbors
I think students are interested in the old folks home, multiple churches, cake art, the dentist office, the bakery, the homes next to the garden, etc. I think we live in a bit of a bubble with regard to our neighbors, and students will want to know more about them. Who are MA's neighbors? What are students' relationships with the businesses around MA and vice versa? How's our parking? Do the white cat's owners know that their cat visits MA everyday?
Interviews: businesses listed above, volunteers at the home, Christian Club leaders Olivia W. and Ryan K. for the churches, Liz Gottlieb (has gotten complaints from neighbors about runners), Travis

Features:
Teachers' Schedules
We know students' lives are busy, but what about teachers? It would be a good followup to the planner/student schedule article that's coming out this edition. I'm interested in knowing what it's like to prep for classes and how much work a teacher brings home each night. Are students and teachers more similar than they think? This could also include a followup with Scott Young and his experiences shadowing the four students.
Interviews: Scott Young, a teacher that's head coach of a team (Liz G.), a teacher that's head of a department (Kevin R.), a teacher that's a faculty advisor to a club (Dave M.) and a teacher that doesn't do any of those things

A&E:
Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa gifts
A fun article on people's favorite gifts to get and give. How people figure out what to get their parents or siblings. Coverage on any secret santas/gift exchanges that classes or advisories do. Do some students donate to charities instead of gifts?

Sports:
Winter sports to do besides basketball.
Basketball is the only team winter sport, but what other options are out there for people who want to stay in shape during the winter? Tuesday running club, futsal leagues, track preseason programs/strength and conditioning, bowling, swimming, etc.

Op/Ed:
Finals Studying
An upbeat or inspirational article with advice from an upperclassman preparing for and not stressing out about finals.

Another article idea:
Miss Representation
There were a lot of different reactions to the presentation/movie and I think people will be interested to hear what the conversations were like afterwards and see some polls as to the community's opinions on the subject.
Interviews: Charis, Bill or Betsy, Joani, Rosario and Sunayna, Wise members

News: I think the Occupy Wall Street article is a great idea (credits to Cami). Interviewing pretty much anyone on campus or off campus could be valid, but this article would need a lot of different opinions from students, faculty, and off-campus as this topic isn’t regularly covered by media. I think that Occupy Oakland is the big story here however, there is a lot more going on on that site.

Sports: What is the most expensive sport to play? Compare costs (club vs. school) (uniform, equipment, coaches, training, gym membership...) of playing certain sports year round. How has the cost changed for our generation Interview: Josh, other team coaches, players, and parents?

Center Spread: Students in the Digital Age: Benefits? Drawbacks? Discuss social media, plagiarism, and safety. Do computers create better students? What has changed generationally, and what can we expect for the future? Interview: Brad, Travis, other faculty.

A&E: 10 things you didn’t know about MA, history wise or faculty wise. Look to Derek, Travis, pretty much any faculty member, someone can also research the history of San Rafael to get some fun facts about the area.

Features: I know it’s done every year, but finals are a big deal (especially for the freshmen because it’s their first time). Interviews: Rebecca Young, students who have taken multiple finals, maybe not sophomores?

A&E: Like Tiffany's, but the spin is the worst christmas gifts people have gotten over the years. Profiling five or six awufl gifts. Interviews: people who have gotten bad gifts. Why: going into the holidays, people are thinking about gifts.

Sports: Basketball team and the holidays: how the basketball team has to stay around during Christmas break, and whether its worth it. Why: a lot of the guys complain about it. Interviews: BBall team

Op/Ed: School and college apps: should seniors' schedules be altered to allow more time for putting together applications? Interviews: Seniors, college councelors Why: Applying to college, especially for people with over ten apps, is like taking two or three more classes.

News: Student protests. If there have ever been any at MA, and how students can protest (like occupy wall street)/ if they really can if any way. Why: occupy wallstreet and other protests are going on. Interviews: Teachers who have been around a long time

Center Spread: Clubs at MA: with so many new clubs being made, are they really that meaningfull? I've noticed four or five new clubs made this year, and sometimes I wonder if kids are making clubs because they are passionate about the subject, or not. Why: MA has a ton of clubs. Interviews: Club leaders

News:
Occupy Wall Street piece; opinions students and faculty have and where they think it's going to go.
Interviews: students and faculty

Sports:
An article on MA sports teams/clubs that don't receive as much attention like sailing or fencing would be cool to read. The sailing team just started and it would be fun to see how they are doing.
Interviews: Kristopher Swanson, Camelia Varriale, Isabelle DuMoulin, Michael Hasson

A&E:
I'm always looking for new music to listen to. Maybe instead of an itunes top ten we could have a list of MA top ten songs people listen to around campus. Interviews: students from all grades, music students

Op/Ed:
Some good advice on how to space out studying and keep stress to a minimum during finals week will be much needed by the freshman and some sophomores. I think Tiffany's idea to interview upperclassman about the topic is a good idea.
Interviews: Upperclassman

CenterSpread:
MissRepresentation seems to have been getting a lot of attention from both teachers and students recently. It would be good to inform the community on what's to come (trilogy), actions that are being taken about the topic, and awareness that has been raised.
Interviews: faculty (Carrinne Lemaire, Travis, Lynne) students (Sunayna, Rosario, Sanjai, Charis)

Features:
Scott Young is shadowing students and it would be fun to get the students and his perspectives on how that went. It would definitely be interesting to see what he learned and I'm sure there will be some funny stories to be told.
Interviews: Scott Young, Kate Lehman, Stephen Hannan, Albert Yamamoto, Kamille Johnson

News: I like Cami's idea about occupy wall street, but we can add our MA 'twist' to it and maybe talk about how it effects us here, we could discuss the impact on the community if something like that were to happen at MA like: Occupy MA Circle

Sports: We could talk about the competitative skiing and snow sports 'the real winter sports" vs basketball and how the two sports intertwine. How are the MA teams affected by the skiers who don;t try out for the basketball team? Are there players who have decided to ski rather than play this year?

A&E: We've had many articles about girls and boys fashion lately, to continue that maybe we can include an article about how the skirts have turned into pants.

Center Spread: The affluent MA community probably has many vacation spots for the winter such as Arizona, Tahoe, NYC, maybe even outside the country. It would be interesting to see where everyone is vacationing to all over the country. We could have graphs, and great interviews from many people, students and teachers of the MA community.

Op/Ed: Studying for finals can be relentless, and super tiring, we should do a piece on the things to do to relax, and to decrease the amount of stress on students during that month. We could list activities, and even talk to Sanji or Karis about their methods of resting or however they teach us to relax in Hum-Dev.
