Goal for staff: Make each day your masterpiece. You have to apply yourself each day to becoming a little better. By applying yourself to the task of becoming a little better each and every day over a period of time, you will become a lot better. Only then will you be able to approach being the best you can be.

Goal for editors & advisor: Define success for those under your leadership as total commitment and effort to the team's welfare. Then show it yourself with your own effort and performance. Most of those you lead will do the same. Those who don't should be encouraged to look for a new team. — John Wooden

politics in prevalent at MA --> interesting way to predict the elections. The cup method has been accurate every four years

http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/01/opinion/urry-women-science/index.html?hpt=op_r1

should students at MA be more aware of their gender biases? Probably

CLAIRE KIRKPATRICK-
Presidential Debate:
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/05/us/politics/after-debate-a-torrent-of-criticism-for-obama.html?hp&_r=0

Marin Academy is considered a democratic community, but in this article there is more praise for Mitt Romney than Barack Obama.

Drought:
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/04/us/widespread-drought-threatens-way-of-life-for-farmers.html?ref=us

This pertains to the MA community because drought on farms leads to less food being available in grocery stores, or more imported food.

Con-computer hackers:
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/04/business/multinational-crackdown-on-computer-con-artists.html?ref=technology

Computer hacking is known to be a past-time for some high school students, and this is a very interesting news piece on what is happening to adult hackers now.

Facebook:
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/04/facebook-passes-1-billion-active-users/

Much of the MA population has a Facebook account, and it is interesting to see the statistics behind it.

Drinking and Driving:
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/03/health/fewer-teenagers-are-drinking-and-driving-cdc-says.html?ref=health

Finally some faith in teenagers! I think this piece is encouraging to MA students and could further influence older students not to drink and drive.

Chipotle:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/02/david-einhorn-chipotle_n_1933679.html?ir=Business

Although Chipotle and Taco Bell are chain restaurants, they each have a restaurant in Marin. Students who love Chipotle may be surprised to know they could go out of business.

iPhone 5
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/01/iphone-5-data-apple-verizon-fix-bug-overages_n_1930180.html?ir=Technology

This would be a helpful article for students interested in purchasing the iPhone 5 with Verizon.

Swastika T-Shirt
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/02/brenda-song-swastika-shirt-tee-nazi-photos-pictures_n_1933409.html?ir=Style

In such a fashion forward community, this is a good example to students when a fashion statement has gone too far! It’s also kind of funny.

Havard Students Visit Egypt Virtually
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/03/us/03iht-educledeweb01.html?ref=education&_r=0

Progressive studies at Havard, and how they’re going about study the conflict it Egypt. This pertains to MA because this technology could move to high schools soon.

Closing More Schools?
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/02/nyregion/new-york-school-progress-reports-may-lead-to-closures.html?ref=education

Hill Middle School in Novato has closed in Marin, and students may be concerned to whether there will be more cuts.

National Articles --> MA Community

1. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/23/technology/data-centers-waste-vast-amounts-of-energy-belying-industry-image.html?ref=technology

At MA there is a common idea that beginning online and paperless has vast environmental benefits but the energy demands needed to fuel the server bays which support the internet and other applications we use everyday, are enormous.

2.http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/02/nyregion/bloomberg-soda-limits-tested-at-barclays-center.html

In the MA Cafe, the Epicurean Group works to provide health and good food for the students everyday, and this shows that the rest of the country is getting similar ideas about making food that is available more health for citizens

3.http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/oct/02/death-grips-website-closed-down?newsfeed=true/ 4. http://www.sfgate.com/world/article/Russian-rock-band-s-appeal-delayed-3910979.php
MA is very open and accepting of many things and ideas, but this shows that not everything is butterflies and rainbows in the real world.

5. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/30/colombia-earthquake_n_1927055.html?utm_hp_ref=world
Around the world massive earthquakes have been happening, last year in Japan, in Hati, and just recently in Columbia, as the threat mounts, the MA community prepares for a possible emergency.

6. http://www.sfgate.com/athletics/ostler/article/A-s-celebrate-improbable-division-title-3917911.php
In 2010 the SF Giants won the World Series, with lots of support from the Bay Area and this year the Oakland A’s have a shot at the Series as well. This year the Bay Area, and the MA community, may show the same support for the A’s as they showed for the Giants

7.http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/shortcuts/2012/oct/04/big-bird-mitt-romney-pbs
Many MA students spent their childhood watching such PBS favorites as Sesame Street and Dragon Tales but the cutting of funds to PBS would jeopardize these shows among others and would hit close to home in the hearts of many students.

8. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/04/fashion/in-paris-dior-san-laurent-and-their-new-designers.html?src=dayp&_r=0
Many males on the MA campus have grown bored of their typical “khakis and a t-shirt” look. (Usually paired with a flannel....) Due to this issue, the MA male population has turned to Paris Fashion week in order to get inspiration for their wardrobe for the rest of the year. Hopefully, we will see some rockin’ loafers, skinny jeans to the point of leg suffocation and striped denim jackets.

9. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/04/garden/shopping-with-rich-thrush-for-power-strips.html?src=dayp With the multitude of electronic gadgets many Ma students are in ownership of, they are at a constant need of power for their pieces of technology, and these powre stips are great ways to keep MA students powered up and ready to go.
